With the help of a ribonucleoprotein it is possible to precipitate collagen in a layer of fibers with a 700 Å period. As collagen is a constituent of many membrane systems in the body, it seemed interesting to investigate the permeability of ions and water through a native collagen membrane.The experiments were carried out with the help of an acryl glass apparatus, where an osmotic pressure, a hydrostatic pressure difference or both can be maintained between the two bulk phases separated by the membrane. The diffusion coefficients for NaCl and KCl were found to be comparable with those in other biological membranes (Ds = 9 · 10−7cm2 · s−1) whereas there is difference of more than three orders of magnitude in the hydraulic permeability (Lp = 6 cm4 · J−1 · s−1).Volume flow measurements caused by an osmotic gradient indicated that the reflection coefficient for NaCl and KCl is very small. In hydrostatic pressure experiments, the membrane shows a preferred direction for volume flows which seems to have something to do with the mode of preparation of the membrane.  相似文献

The present experiment investigated whether observers' emotional and behavioral reactions to facially deformed patients could be substantially improved by surgical procedures conducted by well-trained specialists in an experienced multidisciplinary team. Also investigated was the hypothesis that emotional states mediate the effects of physical attractiveness and facial deformity on social interaction. Twenty patients between the ages of 3 months and 17 years were randomly selected from over 2000 patients' files of Kenneth E. Salyer of Dallas, Texas. Patient diagnoses included facial clefts, hypertelorism, Treacher Collins syndrome, and craniofacial dysostoses (Crouzon's and Apert's syndromes). Rigorously standardized photographs of patients taken before and after surgery were shown to 22 "naive" raters ranging in age from 18 to 54 years. Raters were asked to predict their emotional and behavioral responses to the patients. These ratings indicated that observers' behavioral reactions to facially deformed children and adolescents would be more positive following craniofacial surgery. Similarly, the ratings indicated that observers' emotional reactions to these patients would be more positive following surgery. The results are discussed in terms of current sociopsychologic theoretical models for the effects of attractiveness on social interaction. A new model is presented that implicates induced emotional states as a mediating process in explaining the effects of attractiveness and facial deformity on the quality of social interactions. Limitations of the current investigation and directions for future research are also discussed.  相似文献

The structure and arrangement of phycobilisomes of the unicellular red alga Porphyridium cruentum is compared with the organization of the thylakoid freeze-fracture particles in order to determine the relationship between phycobilisomes and photosystem II. The hemi-ellipsoidal phycobilisomes, 20 nm thick, are predominantly organized into rows; their centre to centre periodicity is 30–40 nm, so that they are well separated by a gap of 10–20 nm. The phycobilisomes are cleaved by a central faint furrow, parallel to the long axis from top to base. The organization of the exoplasmic particles in rows is similar to the arrangement of the phycobilisomes so that a structural relationship between both systems, previously demonstrated in cyanobacteria, is evident. Within the rows, the 10 nm EF-particles are grouped in tetrameric complexes separated by distances similar to those observed for phycobilisomes. We propose that the tetrameric EF-particle complexes correspond to tetrameric photosystem II complexes which bind one hemi-ellipsoidal phycobilisome on the stroma exposed surface of the thylakoid. A hypothetical model of this photosystem II-phycobilisome complex is presented.  相似文献

Based on SEM examinations of about 5000 species of seed plants, this is a survey of their epidermal surface characters with an aim to application in taxonomy. Surface characters may be grouped into four categories: (1) Cellular arrangement or cellular pattern. (2) Shape of cells (the "primary sculpture" of a surface). (3) Relief of outer cell walls (the "secondary sculpture" superimposed on the primary sculpture), caused mainly by cuticular striations and superficially visible wall inclusions and wall thickenings. (4) Epicuticular secretions (the "tertiary sculpture" superimposed on the secondary sculpture), i.e. mainly waxes and related substances.
The systematic applicability is discussed for each of these structural groups. Epidermal characters are only slightly influenced by environmental conditions. Their high structural diversity provides most valuable criteria for the classification between species and family level. There is also some evidence for their systematic applicability above the family level.
The possible evolutionary–ecological significance of surface sculpturing is discussed briefly. There is evidence that these features may be seen primarily under the aspects of reduced ability of plants to contaminate and as temperature control mechanisms of the surfaces.  相似文献

To describe quantitatively and to deliminate nine EEG sleep patterns, mean values and standard deviations of abundances of the frequencies 0.8 ... 1.8 c/sec, 2...3.5 c/sec, 4...13c/sec, 14 to 17 c/sec, 18 to 22 c/sec, and 23 to 40 c/sec as well as of the average amplitudes in selected frequency ranges were calaculated and the distributions represented. 2. All nine EEG activity patterns could be separated by means of univariate and multivariate analyses of variance on the basis of all 28 as well as the 17 indispensable variables. 3. In the course of a stepwise reduction of variables within the framework of a linear discriminant analysis an optimal set of 17 variables was determined for the separation of the patterns, comprising: the percent quantity of the frequencies 0.8 ... 3.5 c/sec, 7 ... 9 c/sec and 18 to 40 c/sec as well as the average amplitudes in the frequency ranges 0.8 to 3.5 c/sec and 7.5 to 40 c/sec. 4. By linear regression analyses it could be shown that the sleep scording system used, can be reflected on an interval scale with the aid of discriminant functions; this can be achieved on the basis of the optimal set of variables as well as of the five most indispensable variables. 5. Finally the degree of the objectivity of the scoring procedures was demonstrated. Advantages and disadvantages of sleep scoring systems were discussed and possibilities of the utilization of results suggested, also in respect to the further development of the automatic recognition of EEG activity patterns.  相似文献

Case Construction of Young Larvae of Micrasema longulum McL. (Trichoptera, Brachycentridae) The method of case building used by the first three larval instars of Micrasema longulum is described. The initial case is constructed above the hatching aperture in the jelly of the egg mass, in the same way as it is done by other species of Brachycentridae. The material of the initial case is caught from drifting particles in running water. From the end of the first larval instar only silk is used for the extension of the case. Two silken layers of a very regular pattern are to be distinguished. The construction of the cloverleaf-shaped posterior aperture is described. Some of the methods used for the case building show a maturing process during ontogenesis.  相似文献

The dopamine transporter (DAT) is a crucial regulator of dopaminergic neurotransmission, controlling the length and brevity of dopaminergic signaling. DAT is also the primary target of psychostimulant drugs such as cocaine and amphetamines. Conversely, methylphenidate and amphetamine are both used clinically in the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy. The action of amphetamines, which induce transport reversal, relies primarily on the ionic composition of the intra- and extracellular milieus. Recent findings suggest that DAT interacting proteins may also play a significant role in the modulation of reverse dopamine transport. The pharmacological inhibition of the serine/threonine kinase αCaMKII attenuates amphetamine-triggered DAT-mediated 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP(+)) efflux. More importantly, αCaMKII has also been shown to bind DAT in vitro and is therefore believed to be an important player within the DAT interactome. Herein, we show that αCaMKII co-immunoprecipitates with DAT in mouse striatal synaptosomes. Mice, which lack αCaMKII or which express a permanently self-inhibited αCaMKII (αCaMKII(T305D)), exhibit significantly reduced amphetamine-triggered DAT-mediated MPP(+) efflux. Additionally, we investigated mice that mimic a neurogenetic disease known as Angelman syndrome. These mice possess reduced αCaMKII activity. Angelman syndrome mice demonstrated an impaired DAT efflux function, which was comparable with that of the αCaMKII mutant mice, indicating that DAT-mediated dopaminergic signaling is affected in Angelman syndrome.  相似文献
