Urbanization is increasing worldwide, with major impacts on biodiversity, species interactions and ecosystem functioning. Pollination is an ecosystem function vital for terrestrial ecosystems and food security; however, the processes underlying the patterns of pollinator diversity and the ecosystem services they provide in cities have seldom been quantified. Here, we perform a comprehensive meta-analysis of 133 studies examining the effects of urbanization on pollinators and pollination. Our results confirm the widespread negative impacts of urbanization on pollinator richness and abundance, with Lepidoptera being the most affected group. Furthermore, pollinator responses were found to be trait-specific, with below-ground nesting and solitary Hymenoptera, and spring flyers more severely affected by urbanization. Meanwhile, cities promote non-native pollinators, which may exacerbate conservation risks to native species. Surprisingly, despite the negative effects of urbanization on pollinator diversity, pollination service measured as seed set is enhanced in non-tropical cities likely due to abundant generalists and managed pollinators therein. We emphasize that the richness of local flowering plants could mitigate the negative impacts of urbanization on pollinator diversity. Overall, the results demonstrate the varying magnitudes of multiple moderators on urban pollinators and pollination services and could help guide conservation actions for biodiversity and ecosystem function for a sustainable future.  相似文献

The effects of phosphorus nutrition on several physiological and biochemical parameters of the green alga, Selenastrum minutum, have been examined. Algal cells were cultured in chemostats under conditions of either Pi limitation or nutrient sufficiency. Pi limitation resulted in: (a) a 5-fold lower rate of respiration, (b) a 3-fold decline in rates of photosynthetic carbon dioxide fixation and oxygen evolution, (c) a 3-fold higher rate of dark carbon dioxide fixation, (d) significant increases in activities of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxylase and PEP phosphatase (128% and 158% of nutrient sufficient activities, respectively), (e) significant reductions in activities of nonphosphorylating NADP-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and NAD malic enzyme, and (f) no change in levels of ATP:fructose-6-phosphate 1-phosphotransferase, phosphorylating NAD-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, 3-phosphoglycerate kinase, and pyruvate kinase. The intracellular concentrations of Pi, ATP, AMP, soluble protein, and chlorophyll were also significantly reduced in response to Pi limitation. As well, the level of ADP was about 11-fold lower in the Pi-limited cells as compared to the nutrient sufficient controls. It was predicted that because of this low level of ADP, pyruvate kinase catalyzed conversion of PEP to pyruvate may be restricted in Pi-limited cells. During Pi limitation, PEP carboxylase and PEP phosphatase may function to “bypass” the ADP dependent pyruvate kinase, as well as to recycle Pi for its reassimilation into cellular metabolism.  相似文献

Cell-mediated suppression of HIV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12  
CTL specific for HIV have been described in lungs of infected patients at early stages of HIV disease. In order to characterize the evolution over time of HIV-specific CTL, we have analyzed the cytotoxic function and the cell surface phenotype of the alveolar lymphocytes from 41 patients at various stages of HIV disease. We demonstrated a progressive decline of alveolar anti-HIV CTL activity and detected Ts cells from the lungs of patients with advanced HIV disease. These alveolar T cells strongly suppressed the effector phase of anti-HIV CTL lysis. They lacked a marked specificity of function because they also block anti-HLA CTL response and were not restricted by the HLA-class-I transplantation Ag. They displayed the CD3, CD8, and HNK1 markers, were CD4 and CD16 negative, and lacked NK activity. The presence of Ts cells at late stages of HIV disease could thus partly explain the inefficiency of host defenses against HIV.  相似文献

Morphological variation between red mullet populations in Greece   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Morphometric variation in 15 characters of the red mullet Mullus barbatus samples from seven Greek localities was examined using multivariate analysis. ANOVA, stepwise discriminant analysis and cluster analysis revealed a rather high morphological variability between the populations studied. The discriminant analysis revealed that about 80% of the examined fish could be correctly classified into the seven areas. This variability could be explained in terms of genetic structuring of the populations and/or environmental conditions prevailing in each geographic area in combination with fish migration and egg/larvae transportation from one area to another. The results suggest that multivariate analysis when combined with other important biological parameters of red mullet may have important implications for the management of the Greek demersal fish resources.  相似文献

The activities of cellulolytic and xylanolytic enzymes produced by an anaerobic fungus (R1) which resembled Neocallimastix sp. were investigated. Carboxymethylcellulase (CMCase), cellobiase, and filter paper (FPase) activities had pH optima of 6.0, 5.5, and 6.0, respectively. CMCase and cellobiase activities both had a temperature optimum of 50 degrees C, whereas FPase had an optimum of 45 degrees C. The pH and temperature optima for xylanase activity were pH 6.0 and 50 degrees C, respectively. Growth of the fungus on wheat straw, wheat straw holocellulose, or cellulose resulted in substantial colonization, with at least 43 to 58% losses in substrate dry matter and accumulation of comparable amounts of formate. This end product was correlated to apparent loss of substrate dry weight and could be used as an indicator of fungal growth. Milling of wheat straw did not enhance the rate or extent of substrate degradation. Growth of the R1 isolate on the above substrates or xylan also resulted in accumulation of high levels of xylanase activity and lower cellulase activities. Of the cellulases, CMCase was the most active and was associated with either low or trace amounts of cellobiase and FPase activities. During growth on xylan, reducing sugars, including arabinose and xylose, rapidly accumulated in the medium. Xylose and other reducing sugars, but not arabinose, were subsequently used for growth. Reducing sugars also accumulated, but not as rapidly, when the fungus was grown on wheat straw, wheat straw holocellulose, or cellulose. Xylanase activities detected during growth of R1 on media containing glucose, xylose, or cellobiose suggested that enzyme production was constitutive.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Haloperidol inhibited dopamine (DA) mediated behaviours and induced pronounced catalepsy in rodents. Metoclopramide, sulpiride, sultopride, tiapride and clebopride, in general, also inhibited these behaviours but only clebopride induced marked catalepsy. Haloperidol displaced 3H-haloperidol and 3H-spiperone from striatal binding sites and inhibited DA stimulated cyclase from striatal and mesolimbic regions. In general, substituted benzamide drugs displaced labelled ligands, but did not inhibit adenylate cyclase. Elevations of striatal HVA produced by haloperidol and sulpiride, but not other benzamide drugs, were partially reversed by atropine. Hypophysectomy did not prevent the elevation of forebrain HVA produced by sulpiride and metoclopramide. Substituted benzamide drugs appear to act on cerebral DA receptors that are independent of DA-sensitive adenylate cyclase and are not balance by a cholinergic input.  相似文献

 The hallmark of the classical major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules is their astonishing level of polymorphism, a characteristic not shared by the nonclassical MHC class I genes. A distinct family of MHC class I genes has been recently identified within the human MHC class I region. The MICA (MHC class I chain-related A) gene in this family is a highly divergent member of the MHC class I family and has a unique pattern of tissue expression. We have sequenced exons encoding the extracellular α1, α2, and α3 domains of the MICA gene from twenty HLA homozygous typing cell lines and four unrelated individuals. We report the identification of eleven new alleles defined by a total of twenty-two amino acid substitutions. Thus, the total number of MICA alleles is sixteen. Interestingly, a tentative superimposition of MICA variable residues on the HLA-A2 structure reveals a unique pattern of distribution, concentrated primarily on the outer edge of the MICA putative antigen binding cleft, apparently bordering an invariant ligand binding site. Previously, we reported that phosphate (Pi) starvation of suspension cells or seedlings of Brassica nigra results in a large elevation in the activity of pyrophosphate-dependent phosphofructokinase (EC 2.7.1.90) (PFP). However, other researchers have found that Pi deprivation either causes a significant reduction or no change in extractable PFP activity of Catharanthus roseus suspension cells, or roots of Nicotiana tabacum and Phaseolis vulgaris seedlings. The present study was undertaken to examine the prevalence of Pi starvation-inducible PFP in seedlings, root cultures, or suspension cells of a variety of plant species differing in phylogenetic relatedness to B. nigra. In all species examined, fresh weights were decreased and acid phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.2) activities were increased by Pi limitation. Brassica napus suspension cells, Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings, and roots of B. napus, B. carinata, B. oleracea, Beta vulgaris, Fagopyrum esculentum, Sinapis alba, and S. arvensis seedlings grown with Pi-limited media contained 170–510% greater PFP activity than did nutrient-sufficient controls. In five of these species the induction of PFP activity by Pi limitation was based in part upon an increased susceptibility of the enzyme to its allosteric activator, fructose-2,6-bisphosphate. By contrast, the PFP activity in Pi-deprived Lycopersicon esculentum root cultures and Nicotiana silvestris suspension cells decreased by 45–65% relative to Pi-sufficient controls. Immunoblotting of extracts from A. thaliana seedlings, S. arvensis, F. esculentum and B. oleracea roots, and B. napus suspension cells probed with potato tuber PFP antibodies indicated that the upregulation of PFP activity by Pi stress in these species was not correlated with an alteration in the amount or subunit composition of PFP. Our findings suggest that induction of PFP during long-term Pi starvation may be characteristic of members of the Cruciferae, Chenopodiaceae and Polygonaceae families whose roots do not form symbiotic associations with mycorrhizal fungi.  相似文献
