Viral and Bacterial Pathogens in Bovine Respiratory Disease in Finland

Pathogens causing bovine respiratory tract disease in Finland were investigated. Eighteen cattle herds with bovine respiratory disease were included. Five diseased calves from each farm were chosen for closer examination and tracheobronchial lavage. Blood samples were taken from the calves at the time of the investigation and from 86 calves 3–4 weeks later. In addition, 6–10 blood samples from animals of different ages were collected from each herd, resulting in 169 samples. Serum samples were tested for antibodies to bovine parainfluenza virus-3 (PIV-3), bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), bovine coronavirus (BCV), bovine adenovirus-3 (BAV-3) and bovine adenovirus-7 (BAV-7). About one third of the samples were also tested for antibodies to bovine virus diarrhoea virus (BVDV) with negative results. Bacteria were cultured from lavage fluid and in vitro susceptibility to selected antimicrobials was tested. According to serological findings, PIV-3, BAV-7, BAV-3, BCV and BRSV are common pathogens in Finnish cattle with respiratory problems. A titre rise especially for BAV-7 and BAV-3, the dual growth of Mycoplasma dispar and Pasteurella multocida, were typical findings in diseased calves. Pasteurella sp. strains showed no resistance to tested antimicrobials. Mycoplasma bovis and Mannheimia haemolytica were not found.     

Phosphorylation of Chromosomal Proteins in Resting and Wounded Potato Tuber Tissues

Wounding of quiescent white potato tuber tissue enhances chromatin-boundprotein phosphokinase activity, which exhibits two distinctphases during wound-healing. A moderate activation of the enzymesup to 20 hr after injury is followed by a dramatic increasein activity with a peak at 50 hr. This time-course resemblesthat of chromatinbound DNA-dependent RNA polymerase with a peakin activity at about 48 hr after wounding. The kinases phosphorylateendogenous proteins as well as added histones, phosvitin andcasein. The incorporated phosphate is stable under standardassay conditions, indicating the absence of protein phosphatases.Sensitivity of the incorporated phosphate toward trypsin andalkali, but not DNase, RNase, hydroxylamine or succinic acidpoints to seryl- and threonyl-bonds and proteins as acceptormolecules. Kinases from resting tissues are only weakly stimulatedeven by 100 mM MgCl₂, those from wounded tissues exhibit pronouncedMg^$$-optima at 5–10 mM with endogenous proteins, phosvitinand casein and 50 mM MgCl₂ with histones. Wounding also increasesthe sensitivity of the kinases toward p-hydroxymercuribenzoate. Chromatin preparations from both resting and wounded tissuescontain about 40 protein bands after polyacrylamide disc gelelectrophoresis. In vitro phosphorylation of these proteinsin chromatin from quiescent tissues is comparably low and uniform.Wounding induces changes in the protein and phosphorylationpattern with a general enhancement of phosphorylative capacityand preferential phosphorylation of low molecular weight proteins. Biotransformation of 2,2-Dimethyl-1,3-Propanediol to 3-Hydroxypivalic Acid by Acetobacter Acetii DSMZ3508 and Related Bacteria

Acetobacter acetii DSMZ3508 and related bacteria converted 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol into 3-hydroxypivalic acid (2,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxypropionic acid; 3HP) during submerged cultivation in mineral salt medium. The maximum yield of 3-hydroxypivalic acid was 24.4% of the fed substrate after 18 days. Cultivation parameters, as pH, cell density, optimal substrate concentration, and oxygen supply for the bioconversion process were determined.     

Synthesis and structure-activity relationship of 2-(aminoalkyl)-2,3,3a,8-tetrahydrodibenzo[c,f]isoxazolo[2,3-a]azepine derivatives: a novel series of 5-HT(2A/2C) receptor antagonists. Part 2.

Following the programme started at Janssen Research Foundation searching for 5-HT(2A/2C) antagonists, we now report on the synthesis of a series of substituted 2-(Dimethylaminomethyl)-2,3,3a,8-tetrahydrodibenzo[c,f]isoxazolo[2,3-a]azepine derivatives. The 5-HT(2A), 5-HT(2C) and H(1) receptor affinities as well as the mCPP antagonistic activity of the compounds synthesised is described.     

Endemische Phytoassoziationen aus den Rumänischen Karpaten

The importance of endemic species for plant communities in the Roumanian Carpathians Mts. has been studied and discussed. Associations of the classAsplenietea trichomanis endemic in the South Carpathians were surveyed; they were classified into some endemic alliances (Gypsophilion petraeae, Micromerion pulegii, andSilenion lerchenfeldianae). Their locus classicus, nomenclatoric type and present distribution were also given.     

Human lymphoblastoid cell lines secreting antibodies with restricted HLA specificity

Peripheral B lymphocytes obtained from three healthy individuals who had been immunized against peripheral blood lymphocytes from appropriate HLA-incompatible donors were transformed by the use of Epstein-Barr virus. The transformed blastoid B cells were repeatedly subcultured by means of cluster picking, and the HLA antibody-producing cultures were identified by testing the culture supernatants by means of the cytotoxicity assay, using the corresponding donor cells. Thus far, four cell lines that secrete cytotoxic HLA antibodies (MP1, 3, 4, and 5) have been established. Specific immunoabsorption experiments revealed that the antibody activity is carried by lambda-type IgM for MP1, by kappa-type IgM for MP3 and MP5, and by both for MP4. Specificity analysis of a panel of HLA-pretyped cells indicated that MP1 detects DQw2, whereas MP5 recognizes B7. The specificity of MP3 was similar to a DQ specificity termed DC5 (probably equivalent to TA10) but not the same. Reactive extraction of penicillin G in a pilot plant Karr-column

Summary Penicillin G was extracted from a model medium with a secondary amine (Amberlite LA-2) as carrier in n-butylacetate as solvent in a 7.6 m high pilot plant Karr-column at different stroke frequencies, throughput of the phases, concentrations of Penicillin G and carrier and ratios of the throughputs of the aqueous and organic phases.
