The emergence pattern of Schistosoma curassoni cercariae from Bulinus umbilicatus, whose adult worms parasitize bovine, caprine, and ovine ungulates in Niger, is of a circadian type with a mean emission time at 0855 hr +/- 1 hr 6 min, characteristic of the schistosome species parasitizing domestic or wild cattle. The comparison of this cercarial emergence pattern with those of the other 3 sympatric species of schistosomes (Schistosoma haematobium, Schistosoma bovis, and Schistosoma mansoni) shows a significant difference between the chronobiology of the cercariae infective for human and those infective for bovine hosts. This difference may improve epidemiological surveys based on snail prevalences by allowing the distinction between bulinids infected with human and bovine parasites. 相似文献

In tetraploid sugar beet, however, the mesophyll cells of most plants become endooctoploid and hence too large. In Uganda, information on visitation frequency of pollinator species visiting coffee flowers is absent, although such information is critical for the stability of coffee yield through the enhancement of pollination services. This study was conducted to understand the role played by local and environmental factors on the visitation intensity of coffee flowers by different bee species. Stepwise multiple regressions were used to investigate the effects of light intensity, distance to forest, foraging time of the day, coffee blooming season and abundance of coffee floral resources on the flower visitation frequency of different bee species. Results indicated contrasting responses of different bee species. The most important factors for social bees included forest distance, light intensity and the time of the day, whereas most determinant factors for solitary bee species were the length of the flowering season and the abundance of coffee floral resources. There is a need for developing habitat and landscape management strategies for the conservation of frequent native species in the vicinity of coffee fields to increase the delivery of pollination services to coffee. It is recommended to farmers to grow their coffee farms in the adjacent of forest habitats and related semi‐natural habitats to receive high bee visitations. 相似文献

Substantial inter- and intraspecific variation is found in reproductive traits, but the evolutionary implications of this variation remain unclear. One hypothesis is that natural selection favours female reproductive morphology that allows females to control mating and fertilization and that diverse male reproductive traits arise as counter adaptations to subvert this control. Such co-evolution predicts the establishment of genetic correlations between male and female reproductive traits that closely interact during mating. Therefore, we measured phenotypic and genetic correlations between male and female reproductive tract characteristics in the yellow dung fly, Scathophaga stercoraria (Diptera: Scathophagidae), using a nested half-sib breeding experiment. We found significant heritabilities for the size of most reproductive tract traits investigated in both females (spermathecae and their ducts, accessory glands and their ducts) and males (testis size but not sperm length). Within the sexes, phenotypic and genetic correlations were mostly nil or positive, suggesting functional integration of or condition-dependent investment in internal reproductive traits. Negative intrasexual genetic correlations, potentially suggestive of resource allocation trade-offs, were not evident. Intersexual genetic correlations were mostly positive, reflecting expected allometries between male and female morphologies. Most interestingly, testis size correlated positively with female accessory gland size and duct length, potentially indicative of a co-evolutionary arms race. Using a density gradient medium (Percoll) we succeeded in isolating homogeneous cell populations from the stromal-vascular fraction of the inguinal tissue of 3-day-old rats. In primary culture, in medium 199 supplemented with 10% fetal calf serum and 5.5 mM glucose, almost complete differentiation (90%) of these fractions was obtained for the first time in presence of a physiological concentration of insulin (10?9 M). During the adipose conversion, insulin markedly enhanced the activities of glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and acid:CoA ligase. When VLDL and heparin were added with insulin to the medium, this effect was not potentiated. On the contrary, VLDL and heparin in presence of insulin increased the triglyceride content of the cells. With VLDL and heparin only, the biochemical and morphological characteristics of the cells were very similar to those observed in control culture. The heavier fraction was morphologically heterogeneous and did not undergo the adipose conversion to the same extent as the two lighter fractions. It was concluded that this model could be helpful in studying the proliferation and the differentiation of preadipocytes at an early stage of development. 相似文献

The ontogenetic developments of the pineal organ, parapineal organ, and retina were studied by the use of light and electron microscopy in embryos and fry of the teleost, Gasterosteus aculeatus, from 60 to 168 h after fertilization. Sixty to 66 h after fertilization, the primordium of the pineal complex is discernible in the diencephalic roofplate; the parapineal anlage is located rostral to the pineal anlage. Photoreceptor cells endowed with outer segments are present in the embryonic pineal organ already after 72 h, whereas outer segments of retinal photoreceptors could not be demonstrated before 144 h (hatching occurs between 120-144 h). Furthermore, neuropil formations with synaptic specializations are present in the rostral part of the pineal organ 108 h after fertilization. At 72 h, the embryonic parapineal parenchyma is already differentiated into parapinealocytes, which give rise to the parapineal tract, and glia-resembling elements. Although parapinealocytes carry cilia (9 X 2 + 0), only a single outer segment of the photoreceptor type could be demonstrated in the parapineal organ of one adult stickleback. Photoreceptors present in the pineal organ of unhatched embryos are hardly involved in visual functions, but may already at this early developmental stage serve as photoneuroendocrine transducers. 相似文献

The CcmH protein of Escherichia coli is encoded by the last gene of the ccm gene cluster required for cytochrome c maturation. A mutant in which the entire ccmH gene was deleted failed to synthesize both indigenous and foreign c-type cytochromes. However, deletion of the C-terminal hydrophilic domain homologous to CycH of other gram-negative bacteria
affected neither the biogenesis of indigenous c-type cytochromes nor that of the Bradyrhizobium japonicum cytochrome c
550. This confirmed that only the N-terminal domain containing a conserved CXXC motif is required in E. coli. PhoA fusion analysis showed that this domain is periplasmic. Site-directed mutagenesis of the cysteines of the CXXC motif
revealed that both cysteines are required for cytochrome c maturation during aerobic growth, whereas only the second cysteine is required for cytochrome c maturation during anaerobic growth. The deficiency of the point mutants was complemented when 2-mercapto-ethanesulfonic acid
was added to growing cells; other thiol compounds did not stimulate cytochrome c formation in these strains. We propose a model for the reaction sequence in which CcmH keeps the heme binding site of apocytochrome
c in a reduced form for subsequent heme ligation.

Summary Locust lipoproteins (lipophorins) were localized by indirect immunofluorescence- and immunogold labelling in cryosections of dorsolongitudinal flight muscles. Immunolabelling was performed with monoclonal antibodies against apolipoprotein epitopes that are exposed at the surfaces of the lipophorin particles. Both at rest and during flight, lipophorins were located only in the wider spaces of the extracellular matrix, in the basement membranes of the individual muscle fibers and in the extracellular spaces that surround interfibrillar tracheoles. No internalization of lipophorins by the flight muscle cells was observed. Our results indicate that the unloading of lipophorins at the flight muscles is an extracellular event. Similarities with the vertebrate system of chylomicron and very-low-density lipoprotein degradation are discussed. 相似文献
