Complete documentation on the status of mammals is indispensable for appropriate conservation measures in protected areas. However, there is inadequate information on mammalian resources in the ecosystem of Gibe Sheleko National Park (GSNP). Thus, the study aimed to assess species diversity, abundance, and habitat association of medium‐ and large‐sized mammals in GSNP. We stratified the study area into five dominant habitat types, namely dense forest, wooded grassland, grassland, riverine forest, and farmland habitat types based on land cover and vegetation structures and further employed stratified random sampling technique across each habitat type. The sample transects covered 20% of the study area. Transect width ranged from 50 m to 400 m based on vegetation cover and visibility of mammals. The main data were collected via direct observation. Data were analyzed via chi‐square test and species diversity indexes. We recorded the total of 20 mammals species'' those belong to 10 families of which 8 species were large‐sized and 12 species medium‐sized mammals. There were two IUCN vulnerable species, namely Hippopotamus amphibious and Panthera pardus, and two globally near‐threatened species, particularly Litocranius walleri and Caracal caracal in the study area. Dense forest held the highest species diversity of medium‐ and large‐sized mammals (H′ = 2.28) with the highest evenness index (J = 0.84). Riverine forest had the least diversity with uneven population distribution. Papio anubis was the most abundance species, whereas Caracal caracal was the least abundant in the study area. GSNP is home for threatened and spectacular mammals species''; hence, an appropriate conservation measure is mandatory to keep existing mammals species''.  相似文献

The study was undertaken to determine the effects of different forms of Acacia saligna leaves inclusion on feed intake, digestibility and body weight gain in lambs fed grass hay basal diet. Twenty local ‘Farta’ yearling male lambs weighing 17.4 ± 0.10 kg (mean ± SD) were randomly allocated to four dietary treatments consisting of daily feeding of lambs in T1 with 700 g grass hay (dry matter basis), and daily free choice feeding of lambs in T2, T3, and T4 with 700 g grass hay + 700 g fresh, wilted, and dried A. saligna leaves, respectively. Inclusion of different forms of A. saligna leaves improved (P<0.01) the daily intake of total DM by 8–9% and that of OM and CP by 7 and 38%, respectively compared to the control. The daily intake of NDFom was lower (P<0.01) by 1–2.3%, whereas that of the ADFom intake declined (P<0.01) by 1.3–3.4% for lambs on wilted and dried forms of A. saligna leaves. Inclusion of A. saligna leaves replaced the intake of the grass hay by 26–27% of the total diet and reduced (P<0.05) apparent digestibility coefficient of the total DM by 9, 7, and 4%, OM by 7, 6 and 4%, and CP by 12, 12, and 9%, but improved (P<0.05) apparent digestibility coefficient of NDFom by 3–4% compared to the control diet. Dried A. saligna leaves improved (P<0.05) apparent digestibility of DM, OM and CP compared to fresh A. saligna leaves. Lambs fed on hay alone lost (P<0.05) body weight, while the lambs supplemented with A. saligna leaves gained (P<0.05) weight. The results of this study revealed that A. saligna leaves could be best included in the grass hay based feeding in dried form at the rate of 265 g/kg DM for improved nutrient utilization and growth performance of yearling lambs.  相似文献

Interaction of 3‐styrylindoles 1–8 viz. 3‐(2‐phenylethenyl‐E)‐NH‐indole (1), 3‐[2‐(4‐nitrophenyl)ethenyl‐E]‐NH‐indole (2), 5‐bromo‐3‐[2‐(4‐nitrophenyl)ethenyl‐E]‐NH‐indole (3), 5‐methoxy‐3‐[2‐(4‐nitrophenyl)ethenyl‐E]‐NH‐indole (4), 3‐[2‐(4‐cyanophenyl)ethenyl‐E]‐NH‐indole (5), 3‐[2‐(4‐cyanophenyl)ethenyl‐E]‐N‐ethylindole (6), 5‐bromo‐3‐[2‐(4‐chlorophenyl)ethenyl‐E]‐NH‐indole (7) and 5‐methoxy‐3‐[2‐(4‐chlorophenyl)ethenyl‐E]‐NH‐indole (8) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) was examined by UV–vis and steady‐state fluorescence spectroscopy. The fluorescence intensity of 1–8 increases with the increasing BSA concentration. Upon binding with BSA, while 1 and 5–8 show a blue shift in their λf max, 2–4 do not exhibit such behavior. Compounds 1–8 also quench the 345 nm fluorescence of BSA in phosphate buffer (λex, 280 nm). These compounds intercalate in the hydrophobic regions of BSA, as evidenced by the determination of BSA binding site micropolarity using compounds 2–8. As evidenced by the estimation of energy transfer efficiency and distance between the donor (BSA‐Trp‐212) and the acceptor (3‐styrylindoles), the halo‐substituted compounds 3 and 7 interact with BSA more effectively than the other 3‐strylindoles. These compounds have potential for use as neutral and hydrophobic fluorescence probes for examining the microenvironments in proteins, polymers, micelles, etc. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We previously isolated the RNC1/TRM2 gene and provided evidence that it encodes a protein with a possible role in DNA double strand break repair. RNC1 was independently re-isolated as the TRM2 gene encoding a methyl transferase involved in tRNA maturation. Here we show that Trm2p purified as a fusion protein displayed 5' --> 3' exonuclease activity on double-strand (ds) DNA, and endonuclease activity on single-strand (ss) DNA, properties characteristic of previously isolated endo-exonucleases. A variant of Trm2p, Trm2p(ctDelta76aa) lacking 76 amino acids at the C-terminus retained nuclease activities but not the methyl transferase activity. Both the native and the variant exhibited sensitivity to the endo-exonuclease inhibitor pentamidine. The Saccharomyces cerevisiae trm2(Delta232-1920nt) mutant (containing only the first 231 nucleotides of the TRM2 gene) displayed low sensitivity to methyl methane sulfonate (MMS) and suppressed the MMS sensitivity of rad52 mutants in trm2(Delta232-1920nt)rad52 double mutants. The deletion of KU80, in trm2(Delta232-1920nt) mutant background displayed higher MMS sensitivity supporting the view of the possible role of Trm2p in a competing repair pathway separate from NHEJ. In addition, trm2 exo1 double mutants were synergistically more sensitive to MMS and ionizing radiation than either of the single mutant suggesting that TRM2 and EXO1 can functionally complement each other. However, the C-terminal portion, required for its methyl transferase activity was found not important for DNA repair. These results propose an important role for TRM2 in DNA repair with a potential involvement of its nuclease function in homologous recombination based repair of DNA DSBs.  相似文献

National Parks are hallmarks of ecosystem preservation in the United States. The introduction of alien invasive plant species threatens protection of these areas. Bromus tectorum L. (commonly called downy brome or cheatgrass), which is found in Rocky Mountain National Park (hereafter, the Park), Colorado, USA, has been implicated in early spring competition with native grasses, decreased soil nitrogen, altered nutrient and hydrologic regimes, and increased fire intensity. We estimated the potential distribution of B. tectorum in the Park based on occurrence records (n = 211), current and future climate, and distance to roads and trails. An ensemble of six future climate scenarios indicated the habitable area of B. tectorum may increase from approximately 5.5% currently to 20.4% of the Park by the year 2050. Using ordination methods we evaluated the climatic space occupied by B. tectorum in the Park and how this space may shift given future climate change. Modeling climate change at a small extent (1,076 km2) and at a fine spatial resolution (90 m) is a novel approach in species distribution modeling, and may provide inference for microclimates not captured in coarse-scale models. Maps from our models serve as high-resolution hypotheses that can be improved over time by land managers to set priorities for surveys and removal of invasive species such as B. tectorum.  相似文献

IL-7 is essential for the development and survival of T lymphocytes. This review is primarily from the perspective of the cell biology of the responding T cell. Beginning with IL-7 receptor structure and regulation, the major signaling pathways appear to be via PI3K and Stat5, although the requirement for either has yet to be verified by published knockout experiments. The proliferation pathway induced by IL-7 differs from conventional growth factors and is primarily through posttranslational regulation of p27, a Cdk inhibitor, and Cdc25a, a Cdk-activating phosphatase. The survival function of IL-7 is largely through maintaining a favorable balance of bcl-2 family members including Bcl-2 itself and Mcl-1 on the positive side, and Bax, Bad and Bim on the negative side. There are also some remarkable metabolic effects of IL-7 withdrawal. Studies of IL-7 receptor signaling have yet to turn up unique pathways, despite the unique requirement for IL-7 in T cell biology. There remain significant questions regarding IL-7 production and the major producing cells have yet to be fully characterized.  相似文献

Abstract Genetic diversity of the streptokinase gene ( sk ) from 36 strains of S. equisimilis and 54 strains of group G streptococci was examined. The strains were isolated from patients with various streptococcal disease manifestations and healthy carriers. The region of the gene that corresponds to amino acid residues 174–244, was PCR amplified. The amplified product was subjected to Mlu I, Pvu II, Dra I and Dde I digestion. Based on the restriction enzyme digestion patterns nine sk alleles were recognized. There was no correlation between the various sk gene alleles and streptococcal disease manifestations. Three of the nine sk gene alleles, sk 4, sk 7, and sk 8, were detected earlier among group A streptococci. The other six alleles were unique to S. equisimilis and group G streptococci. The most common alleles were sk 5, found in 21/90 (23%) and sk 10 detected in 43/90 (47%) of the strains. Alleles sk 1 and sk 2, the most frequent among group A streptococci, were not found among the strains in the present investigation. Thus, it appears that the sk gene has been evolving in line with other species distinguishing features of the streptococci.  相似文献
