It is well known that young, small predator stages are vulnerable to predation by conspecifics, intra-guild competitors or hyperpredators. It is less known that prey can also kill vulnerable predator stages that present no danger to the prey. Since adult predators are expected to avoid places where their offspring would run a high predation risk, this opens the way for potential prey to deter dangerous predator stages by killing vulnerable predator stages. We present an example of such a complex predator–prey interaction. We show that (1) the vulnerable stage of an omnivorous arthropod prey discriminates between eggs of a harmless predator species and eggs of a dangerous species, killing more eggs of the latter; (2) prey suffer a minor predation risk from newly hatched predators; (3) adult predators avoid ovipositing near killed predator eggs, and (4) vulnerable prey near killed predator eggs experience an almost fourfold reduction of predation. Hence, by attacking the vulnerable stage of their predator, prey deter adult predators and thus reduce their own predation risk. This provides a novel explanation for the killing of vulnerable stages of predators by prey and adds a new dimension to anti-predator behaviour.  相似文献

Twins are prone to developmental delay due to prematurity and low birthweight. However it is unknown if twinning is an independent risk factor for developmental delay. The objective of this study was to compare the attainment of a set of gross motor milestones in a cohort of twins and singletons in The Gambia. Eighty-four pairs of twins and 72 singletons were enrolled at birth and followed up until 18 months of age. The mean age at achieving milestones was higher in twins for each development outcome and the difference between twins and singletons was significant after adjustment for confounders for maintaining head, sitting without support and walking. In twins, we found a highly significant correlation within pairs for most milestones. When monozygotic and dizygotic twins were compared, a significant heritability was observed for crawling, sitting, standing and walking, with over 90% of population variance observed due to genetic factors rather than environmental factors. There was little evidence for a genetic contribution towards very early milestones. In conclusion, our data suggest that twinning is an independent risk factor for developmental delay in early life in The Gambia, and that genetic factors contribute strongly to certain motor development outcomes.  相似文献

The haemopoietic stem cell (HSC) has long been regarded as an archetypal, tissue specific, stem cell, capable of completely regenerating haemopoiesis after myeloablation. It has proved relatively easy to harvest HSC, from bone marrow or peripheral blood. In turn, isolation of these cells has allowed therapeutic stem cell transplantation protocols to be developed, that capitalise on their prodigious self renewal and proliferative capabilities. Ex vivo approaches have been described to isolate, genetically manipulateand expand pluripotent stem cell subsets. These techniques have been crucial to the development of gene therapy, and may allow adults to enjoy the potential advantages of cord blood transplantation. Recently, huge conceptual changes have occurred in stem cell biology. In particular, the dogma that, in adults, stem cells are exclusively tissue restricted has been questioned and there is great excitement surrounding the potential plasticity of these cells, with the profound implications that this has, for developing novel cellular therapies. Mesenchymal stem cells, multipotent adult progenitor cells and embryonic stem cells are potential sources of cells for transplantation purposes. These cells may be directed toproduce HSC, in vitro and in the future may be used for therapeutic, or drug development, purposes. Several studies have found relationships between early life factors (birth weight, length of gestation, height, weight, duration of breast-feeding, maternal age, social class, periods of infection, presence of adverse life events, and quality of housing conditions in childhood) and age at menarche but none has considered all of these factors in the same study. The follow-up study of the Newcastle Thousand Families birth cohort, established in 1947, provided age at menarche data collected retrospectively at age 50 from 276 women who returned self-completion questionnaires in 1997. Three main independent associations were observed: girls who experienced a shorter gestation, girls whose mothers were younger when they were born, and girls who were heavier at age 9 had earlier menarche. Birth weight, standardized for gestational age, was found to have different relationships with age at menarche depending upon how heavy or light a girl was at age 9. The results of this study support the hypotheses that conditions in fetal and early life are associated with the timing of menarche and that greater childhood growth is associated with earlier menarche. It is suggested that future work should focus on illuminating the mechanisms underlying these statistical relationships.  相似文献

This review considers the relative roles of sprouting stimuli, perisynaptic Schwann cells and neuromuscular activity in axonal sprouting at the neuromuscular junction in partially denervated muscles. A number of sprouting stimuli, including insulin-like growth factor II, which are generated from inactive muscle fibers in partially denervated and paralyzed skeletal muscles, has been considered. There is also evidence that perisynaptic Schwann cells induce and guide axonal sprouting in adult partially denervated muscles. Excessive neuromuscular activity significantly reduces bridging of perisynaptic Schwann cell processes between innervated and denervated endplates and thereby inhibits axonal sprouting in partially denervated adult muscles. Elimination of neuromuscular activity is also detrimental to sprouting in these muscles, suggesting that calcium influx into the nerve is crucial for axonal sprouting. The role of neuromuscular activity in axonal sprouting will be considered critically in the context of the roles of sprouting stimuli and perisynaptic Schwann cells in the process of axonal sprouting.  相似文献

This study examines the use levonorgestrel (Norplant®‐2) as a means of contracepting white‐faced sakis (Pithecia pithecia). A 70‐mg silastic tubule of levonorgestrel was implanted subdermally between the scapulae in four multiparous and two nulliparous females. Implants remained in the females housed with males of proven fertility for 81 to 734 days. All females experienced low, acyclic levels of estrone conjugates (E1C, < 500 ng/mg Cr) and pregnanediol‐3‐glucuronide (PdG, < 1.5 μg/mg Cr) after insertion of the implant. In five females having nine contraceptive bouts, ovulation was completely blocked for the entire duration of Norplant insertion (range: 81–734 days) as evidenced by a lack of cyclic changes in excretory hormone levels. However, one female was observed to have cyclic ovarian hormonal levels 5.8 months after Norplant insertion. Thus, levonorgestrel can be an effective method for blocking cyclic ovarian hormonal changes for 1 year (n = 2) and possibly as long as 2 years (n = 3). Five winter and five spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars were grown under either control conditions (20°C/250 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) [μmol m−2 s−1]), high irradiance (20°C/800 PPFD) or at low temperature (either 5°C/250 PPFD or 5°C/50 PPFD). To eliminate any potential bias, the wheat cultivars were arbitrarily chosen without any previous knowledge of their freezing tolerance or photosynthetic competence. We show that the differential susceptibilities to photoinhibition exhibited between spring and winter wheat cultivars, as assessed by chlorophyll fluorescence cannot be explained on the basis of either growth irradiance or low growth temperature per se. The role of excitation pressure is discussed. We assessed the correlation between susceptibility to low-temperature photoinhibition, maximum ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (EC 4.1.1.39) and NADP-dependent malate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.82) activities, chlorophyll and protein concentrations and freezing tolerance determined by electrolyte leakage. Susceptibility to photoinhibition is the only parameter examined that is strongly and negatively correlated with freezing tolerance. We suggest that the assessment of susceptibility to photoinhibition may be a useful predictor of freezing tolerance and field survival of cereals.  相似文献

Island species are susceptible to extinction through disturbances such as habitat transformation. Due to the small size and isolation of islands, species have limited options for refuges and recolonization, making their rehabilitation a conservation priority. Robben Island is a continental island, isolated from the mainland ca. 15 000 years ago, and has been degraded by humans and alien species for nearly 400 years. Mainland areas with similar vegetation should be good reference sites for the biological restoration of the island due to historical connectedness. However, very little information exists as to which species were lost. Here we aim to identify the best mainland sites to use as reference sites for Robben Island based on remaining arthropod diversity on the island. Sites found to be most similar in terms of arthropod diversity to Robben Island were sites north of Robben Island (Elandsbaai and Dwarskersbos) rather than the geographically closest locations. These sites therefore represent ideal reference sites for biological restoration of the island. We do not suggest the reintroduction of species from these localities, but rather Robben Island should be restored to match their vegetation height and cover.  相似文献
