Objective
This study explores the presence and actions of an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) brand, Blu, on Twitter to observe how marketing messages are sent and diffused through the retweet (i.e., message forwarding) functionality. Retweet networks enable messages to reach additional Twitter users beyond the sender’s local network. We follow messages from their origin through multiple retweets to identify which messages have more reach, and the different users who are exposed.Methods
We collected three months of publicly available data from Twitter. A combination of techniques in social network analysis and content analysis were applied to determine the various networks of users who are exposed to e-cigarette messages and how the retweet network can affect which messages spread.Results
The Blu retweet network expanded during the study period. Analysis of user profiles combined with network cluster analysis showed that messages of certain topics were only circulated within a community of e-cigarette supporters, while other topics spread further, reaching more general Twitter users who may not support or use e-cigarettes.Conclusions
Retweet networks can serve as proxy filters for marketing messages, as Twitter users decide which messages they will continue to diffuse among their followers. As certain e-cigarette messages extend beyond their point of origin, the audience being exposed expands beyond the e-cigarette community. Background
Brisk walking in older people can increase step-counts and moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) in ≥10-minute bouts, as advised in World Health Organization guidelines. Previous interventions have reported step-count increases, but not change in objectively measured MVPA in older people. We assessed whether a primary care nurse-delivered complex intervention increased objectively measured step-counts and MVPA.Methods and Findings
A total of 988 60–75 year olds, able to increase walking and randomly selected from three UK family practices, were invited to participate in a parallel two-arm cluster randomised trial; randomisation was by household. Two-hundred-ninety-eight people from 250 households were randomised between 2011 and 2012; 150 individuals to the intervention group, 148 to the usual care control group. Intervention participants received four primary care nurse physical activity (PA) consultations over 3 months, incorporating behaviour change techniques, pedometer step-count and accelerometer PA intensity feedback, and an individual PA diary and plan. Assessors were not blinded to group status, but statistical analyses were conducted blind. The primary outcome was change in accelerometry assessed average daily step-counts between baseline and 3 months, with change at 12 months a secondary outcome. Other secondary outcomes were change from baseline in time in MVPA weekly in ≥10-minute bouts, accelerometer counts, and counts/minute at 3 months and 12 months. Other outcomes were adverse events, anthropometric measures, mood, and pain. Qualitative evaluations of intervention participants and practice nurses assessed the intervention’s acceptability. At 3 months, eight participants had withdrawn or were lost to follow-up, 280 (94%) individuals provided primary outcome data. At 3 months changes in both average daily step-counts and weekly MVPA in ≥10-minute bouts were significantly higher in the intervention than control group: by 1,037 (95% CI 513–1,560) steps/day and 63 (95% CI 40–87) minutes/week, respectively. At 12 months corresponding differences were 609 (95% CI 104–1,115) steps/day and 40 (95% CI 17–63) minutes/week. Counts and counts/minute showed similar effects to steps and MVPA. Adverse events, anthropometry, mood, and pain were similar in the two groups. Participants and practice nurses found the intervention acceptable and enjoyable.Conclusions
The PACE-Lift trial increased both step-counts and objectively measured MVPA in ≥10-minute bouts in 60–75 year olds at 3 and 12 months, with no effect on adverse events. To our knowledge, this is the first trial in this age group to demonstrate objective MVPA increases and highlights the value of individualised support incorporating objective PA assessment in a primary care setting.Trial Registration

Cymbopogon flexuosus, lemongrass, and C. martinii, palmarosa, are perennial grasses grown to produce essential oils for the fragrance industry. The objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate biomass and oil yields as a function of nitrogen and sulfur fertilization, and (2) to characterize their utility for lignocellulosic ethanol compared to Panicum virgatum (switchgrass). Mean biomass yields were 12.83 Mg lemongrass ha-1 and 15.11 Mg palmarosa ha-1 during the second harvest year resulting in theoretical biofuel yields of 2541 and 2569 L ethanol ha-1 respectively compared to reported 1749–3691 L ethanol ha-1 for switchgrass. Pretreated lemongrass yielded 198 mL ethanol (g biomass)-1 and pretreated palmarosa yielded 170 mL ethanol (g biomass)-1. Additionally, lemongrass yielded 85.7 kg essential oil ha-1 and palmarosa yielded 67.0 kg ha-1 with an estimated value of USD $857 and $1005 ha-1. These data suggest that dual-use crops such as lemongrass and palmarosa may increase the economic viability of lignocellulosic biofuels. 相似文献

An enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for human urinary beta follicle‐stimulating hormone (FSH) subunit was validated for use in the laboratory macaque (Macaca mulatta and Macaca fasicularis). This ELISA is based on the dissociation of the FSH heterodimer in urine and the subsequent measurement of the beta subunit as a representation of total urinary FSH. This assay was then used to describe the gonadotropin escape following ovarian senescence in post‐menopausal macaques. In addition, the assay was used to observe the impact of an acute stressor on the pituitary‐gonadal axis and how the impact of this stressor varies when experienced at different stages of the menstrual cycle. The study design involved the measurement of ovarian steroids and FSH in urine collected daily during a period of time when animals experienced a well‐defined event on two occasions consisting of capture, restraint, and anesthesia. This unique study design was made possible by the ability to monitor both ovarian and pituitary function in the absence of confounding daily captures and restraint for blood collection. There was a high correlation between urinary FSH measured in macaques with the beta FSH subunit ELISA and serum FSH measured in paired blood samples by radioimmunoassay (n=39, r2=0.878, P<0.001) and the composite urinary FSH profile obtained from normal, pre‐menopausal macaques exhibited the expected dynamics with a transient rise of FSH during the luteal‐follicular transition as well as an acute rise of FSH at mid‐cycle. This pattern was lost in castrate and post‐menopausal monkeys in which FSH levels were significantly increased (P<0.0001) above those of intact males and young females, respectively. In the stress study, we found that stressors occurring during the luteal‐follicular transition not only resulted in acute perturbations of FSH but also led to abnormalities in the subsequent menstrual cycle in 50% of the cases. The metal-dependent M17 aminopeptidases are conserved throughout all kingdoms of life. This large enzyme family is characterized by a conserved binuclear metal center and a distinctive homohexameric arrangement. Recently, we showed that hexamer formation in Plasmodium M17 aminopeptidases was controlled by the metal ion environment, although the functional necessity for hexamer formation is still unclear. To further understand the mechanistic role of the hexameric assembly, here we undertook an investigation of the structure and dynamics of the M17 aminopeptidase from Plasmodium falciparum, PfA-M17. We describe a novel structure of PfA-M17, which shows that the active sites of each trimer are linked by a dynamic loop, and loop movement is coupled with a drastic rearrangement of the binuclear metal center and substrate-binding pocket, rendering the protein inactive. Molecular dynamics simulations and biochemical analyses of PfA-M17 variants demonstrated that this rearrangement is inherent to PfA-M17, and that the transition between the active and inactive states is metal dependent and part of a dynamic regulatory mechanism. Key to the mechanism is a remodeling of the binuclear metal center, which occurs in response to a signal from the neighboring active site and serves to moderate the rate of proteolysis under different environmental conditions. In conclusion, this work identifies a precise mechanism by which oligomerization contributes to PfA-M17 function. Furthermore, it describes a novel role for metal cofactors in the regulation of enzymes, with implications for the wide range of metalloenzymes that operate via a two-metal ion catalytic center, including DNA processing enzymes and metalloproteases. 相似文献

Differential maternal provisioning of offspring in response to environmental conditions has been argued as ‘the missing link’ in plant life histories. Although empirical evidence suggests that maternal provisioning responses to abiotic conditions are common, there is little understanding of how differences in maternal provisioning manifest in response to competition. Frequency manipulations are commonly employed in ecological studies to assess the strength of interspecific competition, relative to intraspecific competition, and we used frequency manipulations to test how competition in two soil moisture environments affects maternal provisioning of seed mass. Specifically, for 15 pairs comprised from 25 annual plant species that occur in California, we varied the relative frequencies of conspecific to heterospecific competitors from 90% (intraspecific competition) to 10% (interspecific competition). We found that conspecific frequency affected maternal provisioning (seed mass) in 12 of the 25 species (eight significantly (p < 0.05), four marginally significantly (p < 0.07)), and that these responses included both increased (five species) and decreased (six species) seed mass, as well as one species with opposing directions of response to conspecific frequency that depended on the soil moisture environment. Conspecific frequency also affected per capita fecundity (seed number) for 17 of the 25 species (15 significantly (p < 0.05), two marginally significantly (p < 0.09)), which generally decreased seed number as conspecific frequency increased. The direction and magnitude of frequency‐dependent seed mass depended on the identity of the competitor, even among species whose fecundity was not affected by competitor identity; the latter finding reveals competitive differences among species that would otherwise appear to be competitively equivalent. Our research demonstrates how species responses to different competitive environments manifest through maternal provisioning, and that these responses alter previous estimates of environmentally‐determined maternal provisioning and reproductive output; future study is needed to understand their combined effects on population and community dynamics. 相似文献

Männliche und weibliche einjährige α-Tiere waren in Anwesenheit eines alten Leitwolfes in ihrem Heimatzwinger den zweijährigen gegenüber dominant, doch alleine im Zwinger der Zweijährigen waren sie unterlegen. Fenbendazole [methyl 5-(phenylthio)-2-benzimidazole-carbamate] is used for the treatment of intestinal roundworms in horses. Twenty-four stallions of mixed breeds, ranging in age from 2 to 16 years, were used to determine the effect of a single, oral dose (20 mg/kg) of Fenbendazole on the potential reproductive capacity of stallions. When investigating complex ecological dynamics at the population or community level, we necessarily need to abstract and aggregate ecological information. The way in which information is aggregated may be crucial for the outcome of the study. In this paper, we suggest that in addition to the traditional spatial, temporal and organizational levels, we need a more flexible framework linking ecological processes, study objects and types of aggregation. We develop such a framework and exemplify the most commonly used types of aggregation and their potential influence on identifiable drivers of community dynamics. We also illustrate strategies to narrow down the range of possible aggregation types for a particular study. With this approach, we hope (i) to clarify the function of aggregation types as related to traditional ecological levels and (ii) to raise the awareness of how important a deliberate way of aggregating ecological information is for a sound and reliable outcome of any empirical or theoretical ecological study. 相似文献
