We studied seasonal variation in the use of winter roosts by five bat species (Eptesicus nilssonii, Myotis brandtii/mystacinus, Myotis daubentonii and Plecotus auritus) in south-east Finland during the winters of 2003/2004 and 2004/2005. At the beginning of the bat hibernation season all species used higher temperatures and humidity than by the season’s end. Hibernacula were at their coldest in mid-hibernation season and became warmer towards the end of the season. However, no species hibernated in warmer locations at the end of the season than in mid-season. Results suggest that bats tend to use different strategies throughout the hibernation season, minimizing the cost of hibernation early in the season by hibernating in warmer locations and minimizing energy expenditure later in the season by hibernating in colder locations. M. brandtii/mystacinus were found in locations with stable temperature and humidity, moving to increasingly stable conditions (chambers, crevices, clusters, ceiling) towards spring. All other species hibernated in more variable microclimates throughout the hibernation season.  相似文献

Dampness, moisture, and mold in buildings are associated with adverse health outcomes. In addition to fungi and bacteria, amoebae have been found in moisture-damaged building materials. Amoebae and a growing list of bacteria have been shown to have mutual effects on each other's growth, but the interactions between amoebae and microbes common in moisture-damaged buildings have not been reported. We co-cultivated the amoeba Acanthamoeba polyphaga with bacteria and fungi isolated from moisture-damaged buildings in laboratory conditions for up to 28 days. The microbes selected were the bacteria Streptomyces californicus, Bacillus cereus, and Pseudomonas fluorescens, and the fungi Stachybotrys chartarum, Aspergillus versicolor, and Penicillium spinulosum. Fungi and bacteria generally benefited from the presence of the amoebae, whereas the growth of amoebae was hindered by Streptomyces californicus, Stachybotrys chartarum, and Bacillus cereus. Pseudomonas fluorescens slightly enhanced amoebae viability. Amoebae were indifferent to the presence of Aspergillus versicolor and Penicillium spinulosum. Thus, our results show that amoebae can alter the survival and growth of some microbes in moisture-damaged buildings.  相似文献

Susceptibility to pathogens and genetic variation in disease resistance is assumed to persist in nature because of the high costs of immunity. Within immunity there are different kinds of costs. Costs of immunological deployment, the costs of mounting an immune response, are measured as a change in fitness following immunological challenge. Maintenance costs of immunity are associated with investments of resources into the infrastructure of an immune system and keeping the system at a given level of readiness in the absence of infection. To demonstrate the costs of immunological maintenance in the absence of infection is considered more difficult. In the present study we examined the maintenance costs of the immune system in lines of Drosophila melanogaster that differed in their antibacterial innate immune response under starved and non-starved conditions. Immunodeficient mutant flies that have to invest less in the immunological maintenance were found to live longer under starvation than wild type flies, whereas the opposite was found when food was provided ad libitum. Our study provides evidence for the physiological cost of immunological maintenance and highlights the importance of environmental variation in the study of evolutionary trade-offs.  相似文献

An extensive drinking water-associated gastroenteritis outbreak took place in the town of Nokia in Southern Finland in 2007. 53% of the exposed came down with gastroenteritis and 7% had arthritis-like symptoms (joint swelling, redness, warmth or pain in movement) according to a population-based questionnaire study at 8 weeks after the incident. Campylobacter and norovirus were the main pathogens.A follow-up questionnaire study was carried out 15 months after the outbreak to evaluate the duration of gastrointestinal and joint symptoms. 323 residents of the original contaminated area were included. The response rate was 53%. Participants were inquired about having gastroenteritis during the outbreak and the duration of symptoms.Of those with gastroenteritis, 43% reported loose stools and abdominal pain or distension after the acute disease. The prevalence of symptoms declined promptly during the first 3 months but at 15 months, 11% reported continuing symptoms. 32% of the respondents with gastroenteritis reported subsequent arthritis-like symptoms. The disappearance of arthritis-like symptoms was more gradual and they levelled off only after 5 months. 19% showed symptoms at 15 months. Prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms correlated to prolonged arthritis-like symptoms.High proportion of respondents continued to have arthritis-like symptoms at 15 months after the epidemic. The gastrointestinal symptoms, instead, had declined to a low level.  相似文献

Because of their decreased overall fitness and genetic variability inbred individuals are expected to show reduced survival and lifespan under most environmental conditions as compared with outbred individuals. Whereas evidence for the deleterious effects of inbreeding on lifespan has been previously provided, only a few studies have investigated effects of inbreeding on survival under starved conditions. In the present study we compared the abilities of inbred and outbred adult Drosophila melanogaster to survive under starved and fed conditions. We found that inbreeding reduced lifespan but had no effect on starvation resistance. The results indicate highly trait specific consequences of inbreeding. Possible mechanisms behind the observed results are discussed.  相似文献

Logging, pervasive across the lowland tropics, affects millions of hectares of forest, yet its influence on nutrient cycling remains poorly understood. One hypothesis is that logging influences phosphorus (P) cycling, because this scarce nutrient is removed in extracted timber and eroded soil, leading to shifts in ecosystem functioning and community composition. However, testing this is challenging because P varies within landscapes as a function of geology, topography and climate. Superimposed upon these trends are compositional changes in logged forests, with species with more acquisitive traits, characterized by higher foliar P concentrations, more dominant. It is difficult to resolve these patterns using traditional field approaches alone. Here, we use airborne light detection and ranging‐guided hyperspectral imagery to map foliar nutrient (i.e. P, nitrogen [N]) concentrations, calibrated using field measured traits, over 400 km2 of northeastern Borneo, including a landscape‐level disturbance gradient spanning old‐growth to repeatedly logged forests. The maps reveal that canopy foliar P and N concentrations decrease with elevation. These relationships were not identified using traditional field measurements of leaf and soil nutrients. After controlling for topography, canopy foliar nutrient concentrations were lower in logged forest than in old‐growth areas, reflecting decreased nutrient availability. However, foliar nutrient concentrations and specific leaf area were greatest in relatively short patches in logged areas, reflecting a shift in composition to pioneer species with acquisitive traits. N:P ratio increased in logged forest, suggesting reduced soil P availability through disturbance. Through the first landscape scale assessment of how functional leaf traits change in response to logging, we find that differences from old‐growth forest become more pronounced as logged forests increase in stature over time, suggesting exacerbated phosphorus limitation as forests recover.  相似文献

Background

Narcolepsy cataplexy syndrome, characterised by excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy, is strongly associated with a genetic marker, human leukocyte antigen (HLA) DQB1*06:02. A sudden increase in the incidence of childhood narcolepsy was observed after vaccination with AS03-adjuvanted Pandemrix influenza vaccine in Finland at the beginning of 2010. Here, we analysed whether the coinciding influenza A H1N1pdm pandemic contributed, together with the Pandemrix vaccination, to the increased incidence of childhood narcolepsy in 2010. The analysis was based on the presence or absence of antibody response against non-structural protein 1 (NS1) from H1N1pdm09 virus, which was not a component of Pandemrix vaccine.

Methods

Non-structural (NS) 1 proteins from recombinant influenza A/Udorn/72 (H3N2) and influenza A/Finland/554/09 (H1N1pdm09) viruses were purified and used in Western blot analysis to determine specific antibody responses in human sera. The sera were obtained from 45 patients who fell ill with narcolepsy after vaccination with AS03-adjuvanted Pandemrix at the end of 2009, and from controls.

Findings

Based on quantitative Western blot analysis, only two of the 45 (4.4%) Pandemrix-vaccinated narcoleptic patients showed specific antibody response against the NS1 protein from the H1N1pdm09 virus, indicating past infection with the H1N1pdm09 virus. Instead, paired serum samples from patients, who suffered from a laboratory confirmed H1N1pdm09 infection, showed high levels or diagnostic rises (96%) in H1N1pdm virus NS1-specific antibodies and very high cross-reactivity to H3N2 subtype influenza A virus NS1 protein.

Conclusion

Based on our findings, it is unlikely that H1N1pdm09 virus infection contributed to a sudden increase in the incidence of childhood narcolepsy observed in Finland in 2010 after AS03-adjuvanted Pandemrix vaccination.  相似文献

Oxysterol-binding protein homologs (ORPs) are implicated in lipid metabolism, vesicle transport and cell signaling. In this study we generated RAW264.7 cells with ORP1L, ORP3, or ORP8 silenced using shRNA lentiviruses. The lipidome of the cells under basal serum-free culture conditions or as treated with oxidized LDL (oxLDL), enzymatically modified LDL (E-LDL), or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was analyzed by mass spectrometry. Reduction in each ORP resulted in distinct and complex effects on macrophage lipidome. Under basal conditions, ORP1L silencing had strongest effects on phosphatidylinositols (PI, increase), free cholesterol (FC, increase), and cholesteryl esters (CE, increase). ORP3 silencing affected most the glucosyl ceramides (GluCer, decrease) and PE-plasmalogens (PE-pl, decrease), while ORP8 silencing increased FC and CE, and decreased GluCer and PE-pl. Upon LPS treatment, the ORP effects were modified: under these conditions ORP1L silencing caused increase of Cer, ORP3 silencing decrease of PI, and ORP8 silencing decrease of PI and increase of PE, not detectable under basal conditions. The lipid species data were subjected to multivariate statistical analysis of principal components, revealing numerous specific alterations upon ORP silencing. The cells cultured in basal conditions or treated with LPS showed qualitatively different responses. However, in LPS-stimulated cells silencing of any of the three ORPs decreased the relative amount of arachidonic acid-containing PI species, increased the corresponding PE species, and favored 16-carbon sphingomyelin (SM) species at the expense of the 24-carbon ones. As a conclusion, the present study reveals the distinct and sophisticated roles of different ORP proteins as regulators of macrophage lipid composition, with implications for inflammatory signaling.  相似文献
