The New Zealand endemic bat family Mystacinidae comprises just two Recent species referred to a single genus, Mystacina. The family was once more diverse and widespread, with an additional six extinct taxa recorded from Australia and New Zealand. Here, a new mystacinid is described from the early Miocene (19–16 Ma) St Bathans Fauna of Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand. It is the first pre-Pleistocene record of the modern genus and it extends the evolutionary history of Mystacina back at least 16 million years. Extant Mystacina species occupy old-growth rainforest and are semi-terrestrial with an exceptionally broad omnivorous diet. The majority of the plants inhabited, pollinated, dispersed or eaten by modern Mystacina were well-established in southern New Zealand in the early Miocene, based on the fossil record from sites at or near where the bat fossils are found. Similarly, many of the arthropod prey of living Mystacina are recorded as fossils in the same area. Although none of the Miocene plant and arthropod species is extant, most are closely related to modern taxa, demonstrating potentially long-standing ecological associations with Mystacina.  相似文献

We describe a nearly complete, three-dimensionally preserved skull of a new albatross species from the late Pliocene (3.0–3.4 million years ago) Tangahoe Formation of New Zealand. Aldiomedes angustirostris, n. gen. et sp. has only about 90% of the length of the skull of the smallest extant albatross and is the geologically youngest record of a small-sized albatross known to date. The new species is characterized by a mediolaterally compressed beak, which is not found in any living albatross. The small size and some cranial features of A. angustirostris indicate that, in spite of its comparatively young geological age, the new species was not part of crown group Diomedeidae. We hypothesize that A. angustirostris was more piscivorous than extant albatrosses, which predominantly feed on squid. The reasons for the extinction of smaller-sized albatrosses are elusive but may be related to changes in seabird fauna during the Pliocene epoch, which witnessed the radiation of various non-procellariiform seabird groups.  相似文献

We describe an extinct parrot from late Quaternary fossil bone deposits on the Chatham Islands, located c. 800 km east of mainland New Zealand. Mitochondrial DNA analyses and osteological characters confirm that the Chatham Islands parrot was a sister taxon to the New Zealand kaka (Nestor meridionalis Gmelin, 1788). The relatively large femur : humerus length ratio and broad pelvis of the Chatham Islands parrot indicate that it had a more terrestrial habit than the kaka. Stable dietary isotope analyses (δ 15N and δ 13C) of Chatham Islands parrot bones suggest that the species may have been mainly herbivorous, although further analyses are required to confirm this. The presence of Chatham Islands parrot bones in early midden deposits shows that the species persisted into the post‐settlement era, and became extinct possibly as a result of habitat loss, hunting pressure, and rat predation following initial Polynesian settlement of the islands (sometime between the 13th and 16th centuries AD). © 2014 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Aganglionosis occurs in the terminal colon of the ls/ls mouse because an intrinsic defect of the presumptive aganglionic tissue prevents the entry and colonization of this portion of the bowel by migrating neural crest cells. The current study was undertaken to determine if abnormalities of the extracellular matrix could be identified in this segment that might account for migratory failure. Since basal laminae of the muscularis mucosa are overproduced in the aganglionic segment of adult ls/ls mice, we examined components of basal laminae in fetal gut from Day E 11 to Day E 16 of gestation. This period spans the time of enteric ganglion formation. Laminin and collagen type IV were studied by immunocytochemistry and proteoglycans by staining glycosaminoglycans with Alcian blue. Abnormalities of each of these components occur during development of the presumptive aganglionic bowel in the ls/ls mouse and could be detected as early as Day E 11. These defects consist mainly of an overabundance of these materials, both in defined basal laminae and throughout the extracellular space of the mesenchyme. Electron microscopic observations in the presumptive aganglionic ls/ls colon revealed a thickening of basal laminae and exceptionally wide intercellular spaces between smooth muscle myoblasts that contained an irregular fibrillar material, consisting of 4.5- to 6.0-nm filaments associated with 14- to 20-nm granules. Fibrillar and flocculant material was continuous with formed basal laminae, and was concentrated in the same areas found to have an overabundance of laminin immunoreactivity. These observations indicate that there is an accumulation of extracellular matrix material, including components of basal laminae, that (i) precedes the formation of enteric ganglia, (ii) is in the path through which enteric neural precursors from the crest would have to migrate, and (iii) is limited to the aganglionic and hypoganglionic ls/ls bowel. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that components of basal laminae contribute to the inability of crest cells to colonize the terminal bowel of ls/ls mice.  相似文献

Summary The hypothalamo-hypophysial system of the chick embryo has been studied with a monoclonal antibody which cross-reacts with arginine vasotocin and mesotocin, using thick (100 m) sections in conjunction with a peroxidase-conjugated rabbit anti-mouse antibody. Although weakly stained perikarya occur occasionally in the tuberal region on embryonic days 6 and 7, the most consistent immunostaining of perikarya is found in the periventricular region of the caudal midhypothalamus at the level of the optic chiasm after embryonic day 8 1/2. Synthesis of peptides, therefore, takes place while the cells are close to their site of origin. Between embryonic days 9 and 10, beaded axons run along the anterior median eminence closely apposed to the adenohypophysis, thereby forming the anlage of the zona externa. The axons of the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial tract surround the neural lobe between embryonic days 11 and 12. The caudal to rostral wave of neuronal maturation that occurs during development appears to be due to a progressive differentiation of the periventricular zone, as well as the migration of perikarya. The early periventricular perikarya at embryonic day 8 1/2 send processes rostrally in a wing-shaped formation that extends both dorso- and ventrolaterally. From embryonic days 10 to 12, perikarya can be observed in the wing-like extensions, apparently migrating to rostral levels. The dorsolateral pathway gives rise at its midportion to the lateral cell group, whereas those perikarya migrating more laterally form the anlage of the external supraoptic nucleus. The ventrolateral wing-shaped extension of perikarya appears to be directed toward the ventral group and those lateral perikarya continuous with it. The location of mature neuronal cell groups is well established by embryonic day 17.  相似文献

Summary The hypothalamo-hypophysial system of the adult chicken has been studied with a monoclonal antibody that cross-reacts with arginine vasotocin and mesotocin. We have used this antibody on thick (100 m) sections in conjunction with a peroxidase-conjugated rabbit antimouse antibody that permits the visualization not only of entire perikarya, but also of long portions of their axons and dendrites. Our results confirm older concepts based on classical methods, but the more sensitive immunocytochemical method reveals that the system is more extensive than previously recognized. Immunostained neurons in the chicken are widely scattered in the hypothalamus. In the rostral preoptic region, there are three immunostained neuronal cell groups: 1) a prominent closely packed group that extends along the ventromedial surface, 2) a diffusely distributed lateral group, and 3) an external group that surrounds the lateral aspect of the septomesencephalic tract. Caudally in the preoptic area and in the anterior hypothalamus, the same groups are present; but there are also conspicuous periventricular perikarya. Many of them have processes that project to the lumen of the third ventricle, as well as parallel axons that arch lateroventrally in the hypothalamus. In the midhypothalamic area, the periventricular perikarya and processes are particularly numerous at the level of the palliai commissure. The dorsal periventricular group located at the level of the dorsomedial anterior nucleus of the thalamus are the most caudal perikarya. They extend laterally in a wing-like formation. The immunostained axons from all of these perikarya form a compact hypothalamo-hypophysial tract as they run from the midhypothalamus to the median eminence and converge beneath the third ventricle. Axons branching from this tract innervate the zone externa of the anterior median eminence; another group of axons running in the fibrous layer of the zona interna proceeds to the neural lobe.  相似文献

Leucocarbo shags are a species‐rich seabird clade exhibiting a southern circumpolar distribution. New Zealand's endemic Stewart Island shag, Leucocarbo chalconotus (G. R. Gray, 1845), comprises two regional groups (Otago and Foveaux Strait) that show consistent differences in relative frequencies between pied (black and white) and bronze (wholly dark) plumages, the extent and colour of facial carunculation, body size (based on postcranial morphometrics), and breeding season. Moreover, previous genetic research on modern and historical specimens utilizing mitochondrial DNA control‐region sequences has also shown that the Otago and Foveaux lineages may not be sister taxa; instead, in several analyses the Otago lineage is sister to the endemic Chatham Island shag, Leucocarbo onslowi (Forbes, 1893). We present new ancient DNA analyses of the type specimens for the Otago and Foveaux Strait lineages of L. chalconotus, including a phylogenetic reanalysis of the available ancient, historical, and modern control‐region sequence data for these lineages (including L. onslowi), and additional statistical analyses incorporating new morphometric characters. These analyses indicate that under the diagnosable species concept the two lineages of Stewart Island shag represent two separate species, which we now recognize as the Otago shag, L. chalconotus (G. R. Gray, 1845), and the Foveaux shag, Leucocarbo stewarti (Ogilvie‐Grant, 1898).  相似文献

The little spotted kiwi (Apteryx owenii) is a flightless ratite formerly found throughout New Zealand but now greatly reduced in distribution. Previous phylogeographic studies of the related brown kiwi (A. mantelli, A. rowi and A. australis), with which little spotted kiwi was once sympatric, revealed extremely high levels of genetic structuring, with mitochondrial DNA haplotypes often restricted to populations. We surveyed genetic variation throughout the present and pre-human range of little spotted kiwi by obtaining mitochondrial DNA sequences from contemporary and ancient samples. Little spotted kiwi and great spotted kiwi (A. haastii) formed a monophyletic clade sister to brown kiwi. Ancient samples of little spotted kiwi from the northern North Island, where it is now extinct, formed a lineage that was distinct from remaining little spotted kiwi and great spotted kiwi lineages, potentially indicating unrecognized taxonomic diversity. Overall, little spotted kiwi exhibited much lower levels of genetic diversity and structuring than brown kiwi, particularly through the South Island. Our results also indicate that little spotted kiwi (or at least hybrids involving this species) survived on the South Island mainland until more recently than previously thought.  相似文献
