Although H. pylori infection has been recognized as a major etiological agent for the development of chronic active gastritis, duodenal ulcer and benign non-NSAID related gastric ulcer, its role in the development of symptoms in patients with dyspepsia remains uncertain. Results from population-based epidemiological studies have been conflicting regarding a causal link between H. pylori infection and dyspepsia. Abnormalities in gastric acid secretion may exist in some dyspeptic patients. Whether disordered gastric motility seen in dyspeptic patients is related to the infection is not clear based on the results in the literature. Numerous clinical trials have been undertaken to eradicate H. pylori infection and improve the symptoms in dyspeptic patients; however, the results have been discrepant between studies. Many published studies suffer from methodological problems that have made interpretation difficult. Large, well-conducted, randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trials with long-term follow-up are needed to justify the beneficial effect of H. pylori eradication treatment in dyspeptic patients seen in some small studies. H. pylori eradication therapy is cost-effective in H. pylori-infected dyspeptic patients although this benefit may take a long time to accrue, especially in younger patients.  相似文献

 An RFLP-based map consisting of 160 loci was constructed in an intervarietal cross of foxtail millet [Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv.], Longgu 25×Pagoda Flower Green. The map comprises nine linkage groups, which were aligned with the nine foxtail millet chromosomes using trisomic lines, and spans 964 cM. The intraspecific map was compared to an interspecific map, constructed in a S. italica×S. viridis cross. Both the order of the markers and the genetic distances between the loci were highly conserved. Deviations from the expected 1 : 2 : 1 Mendelian segregation ratios were observed in both the intra- and inter-specific populations. The segregation data indicate that chromosome VIII in the Longgu 25×Pagoda Flower Green cross carries a gene that strongly affects gamete fertility. An experiment was conducted to determine whether factors affecting pregnancy rate out-of-season are associated more with transcervical artificial insemination (T-AI) procedures or with the reproductive state of the ewe. Twenty Finncross ewes were treated with progesterone sponges, and at sponge removal (0 h) 10 ewes were treated with eCG. Blood samples were collected for LH and progesterone analyses, and follicular development was monitored using ultrasonography. Ewes were inseminated from 48 to 52 h with 200 million motile frozen-thawed spermatozoa. The incidence of estrus, LH surges and ovulation was greater (P < 0.01) and intervals to these responses were shorter (P < 0.01) in the eCG-treated ewes. The number of follicles > 5 mm was higher (P < 0.05) in eCG-treated than control ewes. Progesterone concentrations increased and remained elevated through Day 19 in 7 eCG-treated and in 1 control ewe, and these ewes were pregnant based upon ultrasonographic examination. The results demonstrate that the T-AI technique using frozen-thawed semen produces a relatively high (70%) pregnancy rate out-of-season. The pregnancy rate was found to reflect primarily the reproductive condition of the ewe.  相似文献

This article proposes a stochastic growth model that starts as a Yule process and is subsequently joined with a Prendiville process when the population attains certain prescribed critical size. In other words, the model assumes exponential growth in an early stage and logistic growth later on to reflect growth retardation caused by overcrowding. In the case that the population starts with a single unit, closed form expressions are given for the distribution of the population size and for the mean and variance functions of the process. Numerical solutions are briefly discussed for the process that starts with more than one unit.  相似文献

Summary The rice mutantYin-Yang has been selected during a screen for resistance to cytoskeletal drugs and is characterized by alterations in epidermal cell length and a precocious onset of gravitropism. The elongation response of coleoptile segments to auxin does not reveal changes of auxin sensitivity inYin-Yang. However, in contrast to the wild type, cell elongation inYin-Yang is highly sensitive to the actin-polymerisation blocker cytochalasin D. This increased sensitivity to cytochalasin D requires optimal concentrations of auxin to become manifest. The auxin response of actin microfilaments in epidermal cells differs between wild type and mutant. In the wild type, the longitudinal microfilament bundles become loosened in response to auxin. In the mutant, these bundles disintegrate partially and are replaced by a network of short filaments surrounding the nucleus. Several aspects of the mutant phenotype can be mimicked in the wild type by treatment with cytochalasin D. 6-Phosphogluconate dehydrogenase is the pivotal enzyme that links the gluconate route and the oxidative phase of the pentose phosphate pathway in Schizosaccharomyces pombe. The enzyme differs from the known 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenases of other sources in that the Schizosaccharomyces enzyme is tetrameric having a subunit mass of 38 kDa, that it requires NADP+ obligatorily for activity, and that it can be activated by divalent metal ions such as Co2+ and Mn2+. Steady-state kinetic studies were undertaken. Initial rate and product inhibition results suggest that 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase from Schizosaccharomyces pombe catalyzes NADP(+)-linked oxidative decarboxylation of 6-phosphogluconate by an equilibrium random mechanism with two independent binding sites, namely one site for the nicotinamide coenzyme, NADP+/NADPH, and another site for 6-phosphogluconate-D-ribulose-5-phosphate and for CO2. Studies of pH dependence implicated a basic residue with a pK value of 7.4 in the binding of 6-phosphogluconate and an acidic residue with a pK value of 6.7 in the cation-mediated interaction of NADP+ with the enzyme.  相似文献

D-Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase is a regulatory enzyme of the oxidative pentose phosphate pathway in Schizasaccharomyces pombe. The enzyme is subject to negative cooperative regulation by D-glucose-6-phosphate as characterized by the Hill coefficient of 0.68 +/- 0.04. D-Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and D-ribulose-5-phosphate rectify the negative cooperativity as evidenced from a change in the Hill coefficients to 0.98 +/- 0.05 and 1.02 +/- 0.05, respectively. These pentose phosphate pathway intermediates also inhibit the enzyme competitively with respect to D-glucose-6-phosphate. Thus, D-glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase provides an avenue for regulating the partitioning of D-glucose between the redundant branches of the oxidative phosphate pathway in S. pombe.  相似文献

A mathematical model has been developed to study the control mechanisms of human trunk movement during walking. The trunk is modeled as a base-excited inverted pendulum with two-degrees of rotational freedom. The base point, corresponding to the bony landmark of the sacrum, can move in three-dimensional space in a general way. Since the stability of upright posture is essential for human walking, a controller has been designed such that the stability of the pendulum about the upright position is guaranteed. The control laws are developed based on Lyapunov's stability theory and include feedforward and linear feedback components. It is found that the feedforward component plays a critical role in keeping postural stability, and the linear feedback component, (resulting from viscoelastic function of the musculoskeletal system) can effectively duplicate the pattern of trunk movement. The mathematical model is validated by comparing the simulation results with those based on gait measurements performed in the Biomechanics Laboratory at the University of Manitoba.  相似文献

Sialic acids have been implicated in a variety of complex biological regulatory and signalling events and their functional importance is reflected by their presence in a wide variety of phyla. Potentially they may inhibit intermolecular and intercellular interactions. Lectins that exhibit specificity for sialic acid or sialoglycoconjugates are ubiquitous in the body fluids of invertebrates and this has supported the assumption that these lectins are involved in defense against microbes that express sialic acids on their surfaces. This biological function has also been inferred from the absence of sialic acids in lower invertebrates. However, most invertebrate lectins are heterogeneous and may also bind other ligands. The biological significance of the different carbohydrate specificities are not yet known. We have demonstrated the presence of sialic acids in hemolymph from two marine bivalves, the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas (≈15 μg ml−1) and the horse mussel Modiolus modiolus (48–100 μg ml−1) by several different assays. The sialic acid was mostly in free form. Affinity purified lectins from the horse mussel also contained bound sialic acids (2–5 μmol g−1). Oyster hemolymph stimulated the in vitro phagocytosis of bacteria by oyster hemocytes. The stimulation by hemolymph is facilitated by a dialyzable component, that apparently is active irrespective of the binding to sialic acid (BSM). Addition of sialic acid had no significant effect on the in vitro phagocytosis of bacteria by oyster hemocytes.  相似文献
