A field experiment was carried out to determine whether group-foragingstarlings (Sturnus vulgaris) use public information to helpthem estimate the quality of an artificial resource patch anddepart accordingly. Three kinds of information are potentiallyavailable in a group: patch-sample information, pre-harvestinformation, and public information. These three types of informationcan be combined into four patch assessment strategies: (1) patch-samplealone; (2) patch-sample and pre-harvest; (3) patch-sample andpublic; and (4) patch-sample, pre-harvest, and public. Dependingon the foraging environment we presented to the starlings, eachassessment strategy made a unique set of predictions concerningthe patch departure decisions of pairs of birds based on differencesin their foraging success. The environment was manipulated intwo ways: by altering the variability in patch quality and bychanging compatibility, the ease with which individual birdscould simultaneously acquire both patch-sample and public information.Our observations on patch persistence and departure order demonstratethat the starlings used a combination of patch-sample and publicinformation, but not pre-harvest information, to estimate thequality of the experimental patch. Moreover, our results suggestthat starlings use public information only when it is easilyavailable and ignore it under incompatible conditions. Thisstudy provides the first evidence of public information usein a patch assessment problem.  相似文献

The effects of reproductive compensation on an X-linked recessive lethal are examined. Complete compensation without regard to the sex of the offspring increases the incidence of female carriers by a factor of 1.5, and of affected males by 1.33. However, if families reproduce until they have a healthy male offspring, the incidence of the X-linked lethal can be increased two or three orders of magnitude. Even only 1% of the population reproducing until a male is born can inflate the incidence of the disease by an order of magnitude, provided this pattern of family planning is culturally inherited. Similarly, reproducing until there is at least one child of each sex increases the incidence of an X-linked lethal. The impact of these types of sex-biased family planning on the fraction of new mutants among affect males is discussed.  相似文献

In songbirds, the spatial pattern of song sharing among individuals is influenced by the song learning and dispersal strategies within each species. In birds where females and males sing and create joint acoustic displays (duets), the processes defining the patterns of song sharing become more complex as there might be different selection pressures shaping the behaviour of each sex. To provide further insight into the vocal development and the dispersal strategy of duetting tropical species, we investigated the patterns of individual and pair repertoire sharing, as well as the stability of these repertoires, in a colour-marked population of riverside wrens, Cantorchilus semibadius, located in the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. Using data collected over a five-year period, we found considerable variation in the sharing levels of phrase and duet type repertoires among neighbouring individuals coupled with a general decline of repertoire sharing as distance increased between birds’ territories. These results are consistent with a pattern predicted in age-restricted learners that establish preferentially near their tutors. Furthermore, we found no evidence of individuals changing their phrase type repertoires over time, including after remating events. Duet type repertoires were also stable when pairs remained together. However, we observed a surprisingly high turnover rate. When individuals remated, even though the majority of the previous duet type repertoire remained, several new duet types were included. Taken together, our findings suggest that riverside wrens might create their individual repertoires by copying their same-sex parent and neighbouring individuals before dispersal. Additionally, we speculate that even though birds were able to create new duet types after changing partners, a substantial portion of their duet type repertoire might also be copied from their parents and neighbouring pairs during the initial critical period of song learning.  相似文献

Mobbing, where birds harass a predator through a combination of vocalizations and stereotyped behaviours, is an effective anti-predator behaviour for many species. Mobbing may be particularly important for juveniles, as these individuals are often more vulnerable than adults. Although the component behaviours of mobbing are often considered to be un-learned, there are few confirmatory data, and the developmental trajectory of mobbing is unknown. In this study, we tested whether conspecific or heterospecific mobbing calls initiated mobbing behaviour in juvenile Blue Tits Cyanistes caeruleus. We located wild adult and recently fledged juvenile Blue Tits and presented them with playback recordings of adult conspecific (Blue Tit) and heterospecific (Great Tit Parus major) mobbing alarm calls. Although adult birds readily mob in response to these types of playbacks, juveniles did not exhibit characteristic mobbing behaviour. Some juveniles did, however, exhibit individual components of mobbing behaviour found in mobbing, despite not producing adult-like mobbing behaviour in response to either conspecific or heterospecific playback. These results suggest that, although birds might be capable of mobbing as juveniles, the associations between the non-vocal stereotyped mobbing behaviours and mobbing calls may be learned.  相似文献

Two silicone coatings have been evaluated for barnacle adhesion. One coating is an unfilled hydrosilation cured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) network, while the other is a room temperature vulcanized (RTV), filled, ethoxysiloxane cured PDMS elastomer, RTV11?. The adhesion strength of one species of barnacle, Balanus eburneus, to the hydrosilation coatings is in the range of 0.37–0.60 kg cm‐2 while the corresponding range for RTV11 is 0.64–0.90 kg cm‐2. The easier release of B. eburneus from the hydrosilation cured network compared to RTV11 is discussed in relationship to differences in bulk and surface properties. Preliminary results suggest bulk modulus may be the most important parameter in determining barnacle adhesion strength. In light or mechanical property analysis, a re‐evaluation of surface properties and chemical stability is presented.  相似文献

The toxic metal ion cadmium (Cd2+) induces pleiotropic effects on cell death and survival, in part through effects on cell signaling mechanisms and cytoskeletal dynamics. Linking these phenomena appears to be calmodulin‐dependent activation of the Ca2+/calmodulin‐dependent protein kinase II (CaMK‐II). Here we show that interference with the dynamics of the filamentous actin cytoskeleton, either by stabilization or destabilization, results in disruption of focal adhesions at the ends of organized actin structures, and in particular the loss of vinculin and focal adhesion kinase (FAK) from the contacts is a result. Low‐level exposure of renal mesangial cells to CdCl2 disrupts the actin cytoskeleton and recapitulates the effects of manipulation of cytoskeletal dynamics with biological agents. Specifically, Cd2+ treatment causes loss of vinculin and FAK from focal contacts, concomitant with cytoskeletal disruption, and preservation of cytoskeletal integrity with either a calmodulin antagonist or a CaMK‐II inhibitor abrogates these effects of Cd2+. Notably, inhibition of CaMK‐II decreases the migration of FAK‐phosphoTyr925 to a membrane‐associated compartment where it is otherwise sequestered from focal adhesions in a Cd2+‐dependent manner. Cadmium is a toxic metal with pleiotropic effects on cell death and survival. The mesangial cell is particularly responsive to Cd's effects on kinase signaling pathways and cytoskeletal dynamics. Here we show that CaMK‐II is a participant in the cytoskeletal effects of Cd2+. A major mesangial cell isoform, CaMK‐IIδ, was identified in pellets of DNase I pull‐downs and cytosolic immunoprecipitates of G‐actin. CaMK‐IIδ was also present in Triton X‐100‐insoluble cytoskeletal preparations and translocated to the cytoskeleton in a concentration‐dependent manner in Cd‐treated cells. Translocation was suppressed by KN93, an inhibitor of CaMK‐II phosphorylation. In vitro actin polymerization studies indicated that recombinant CaMK‐IIδ sequestered actin monomer. Cytoskeletal preparations from Cd‐treated cells decrease the rate of polymerization, but KN93 co‐treatment prevents this effect. Over‐expressed CaMK‐IIδ also translocated to the cytoskeleton upon Cd exposure, and this was prevented by KN93. Conversely, siRNA silencing of CaMK‐IIδ increases the effect of cytoskeletal extracts on actin polymerization, and abrogates the effect of Cd. The actin capping and severing protein, gelsolin, translocates to the cytoskeleton in the presence of Cd2+, dependent upon the phosphorylation of CaMK‐II, and is recovered together with actin and CaMK‐IIδ in G‐actin pull‐downs and F‐actin sedimentation. Translocation is accompanied by generation of a 50 kDa gelsolin fragment whose appearance is prevented by KN93 and CaMK‐IIδ silencing. We conclude that cytoskeletal effects of Cd in mesangial cells are partially mediated by Cd‐dependent activation of CaMK‐IIδ, binding of CaMK‐IIδ and gelsolin to actin filaments, and cleavage of gelsolin. Marek's disease virus, an avian alphaherpesvirus, has been used as an excellent model to study herpesvirus oncogenesis. One of its potential oncogenes, MEQ, has been demonstrated to transform a rodent fibroblast cell line, Rat-2, in vitro by inducing morphological transformation and anchorage- and serum-independent growth and by protecting cells from apoptosis induced by tumor necrosis factor alpha, C2-ceramide, UV irradiation, or serum deprivation. In this report, we show that there is a cell cycle-dependent colocalization of MEQ protein and cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK2) in coiled bodies and the nucleolar periphery during the G1/S boundary and early S phase. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that CDK2 is found to localize to coiled bodies. Such an in vivo association and possibly subsequent phosphorylation may result in the cytoplasmic translocation of MEQ protein. Indeed, MEQ is expressed in both the nucleus and the cytoplasm during the G1/S boundary and early S phase. In addition, we were able to show in vitro phosphorylation of MEQ by CDKs. We have mapped the CDK phosphorylation site of MEQ to be serine 42, a residue in the proximity of the bZIP domain. An indirect-immunofluorescence study of the MEQ S42D mutant, in which the CDK phosphorylation site was mutated to a charged residue, reveals more prominent cytoplasmic localization. This lends further support to the notion that the translocation of MEQ is regulated by phosphorylation. Furthermore, phosphorylation of MEQ by CDKs drastically reduces the DNA binding activity of MEQ, which may in part account for the lack of retention of MEQ oncoprotein in the nucleus. Interestingly, the localization of CDK2 in coiled bodies and the nucleolar periphery is observed only in MEQ-transformed Rat-2 cells, implicating MEQ in modifying the subcellular localization of CDK2. Taken together, our data suggest that there is a novel reciprocal modulation between the herpesvirus oncoprotein MEQ and CDK2.  相似文献

Elongation factor G (EF-G) catalyzes the translocation step of protein biosynthesis. Genomic analysis suggests that two isoforms of this protein occur in mitochondria. The region of the cDNA coding for the mature sequence of isoform 1 of human mitochondrial EF-G (EF-G1(mt)) has been cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant protein has been purified to near homogeneity by chromatography on Ni-NTA resins and cation exchange high performance liquid chromatography. EF-G1(mt) is active on both bacterial and mitochondrial ribosomes. Human EF-G1(mt) is considerably more resistant to fusidic acid than many bacterial translocases. A molecular model for EF-G1(mt) has been created and analyzed in the context of its relationship to the translocases from other systems.  相似文献
