Summary We have isolated four distinct colony types of the fungus Tolypocladium inflatum, the producer of the immunosuppresive agent cyclosporin A: morphologically normal white, red, and orange colonies and morphologically diverse tiny brown colonies. In liquid cultures, white normal and brown colonies developed into yellow broths. The broth of the brown colony had a low final pH and low cyclosporin production, whereas orange and red colonies had dark brown and even black broths with higher final pH and high cyclosporin production. Ontogenetic niche shifts are ubiquitous in nature. However, in most species little is known about phenotypic plasticity in the timing of shifts and in the associated characters. Following a period of endogenous feeding on yolk, salmonid alevins emerge from their gravel nests into the open water and start feeding exogenously. We studied, by using replicated artificial nests, whether the responses of emerging Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) alevins to chemical cues from two piscivorous fish predators and conspecific competitors are plastic. We hypothesised that the alevins should delay emergence in response to predator cues, whereas cues from competitors should induce earlier emergence. We found that chemical cues from predatory burbot ( Lota lota ) delayed emergence, whereas cues from brown trout ( S. trutta ) tended to induce earlier emergence. The earlier emergence in response to trout cues was associated with a smaller body size and more yolk resources remaining at emergence, but burbot cues did not alter these traits. Predator cues also influenced the daily pattern of emergence: more alevins emerged during the morning in the burbot treatment, and fewer alevins emerged during the afternoon in the trout treatment. Chemical cues from conspecific competitors had no effect on emergence patterns. The results indicate that salmon alevins exhibit flexible ontogenetic niche shifts in the timing of emergence in response to predator cues, and that the responses are predator-specific. As timing of emergence is a major determinant of territory acquisition, these responses are likely to have an impact on later fitness of the fry.  相似文献

GLC-mass fragmentography of the heptafluorobutyryl derivative was found to be a sensitive and reliable method for the determination of tetrahydro-beta-carboline (THBC, tryptoline) in human blood platelets and plasma. The concentration of THBC in platelet-rich plasma of eight healthy young adult persons was 9.4 +/- 1.6 (mean +/- SD) ng/ml. It was mainly concentrated in platelets, which usually contained over 50% of total THBC.  相似文献

A mathematical model of skeletal muscle glucose metabolism is presented. This model resulted from the application of thermodynamics combined with the dynamics of an energy storage capability. The physiological system consists of the insulin modulated, carrier-mediated transport of glucose into skeletal muscle, the biochemical reactions of the Embden-Meyerhof pathway, the cyclic 3′,5′ adenosine monophosphate-dependent protein kinase controlled synthesis/degradation of glycogen stores, and the diffusion of lactate from muscle. The metabolic system is defined and synthesized by the construction of the energy flow bond graph.The bond graph model was evaluated by simulating the system response over a 2 min period to step increases in extracellular epinephrine concentration. The simulated response of the metabolites and modulated enzymes corresponds, qualitatively and quantitatively, with in vivo measurements published in the literature.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

To formulate low-protein diets for blue foxes with sufficient amounts of amino acids (AA), AA digestibility and AA requirements of the animals are crucial information. Therefore, a digestibility and nitrogen (N) balance trial was conducted with 20 blue foxes to determine the macronutrient and AA digestibility and N utilisation in low-protein diets supplemented with DL-methionine (Met) and L-histidine (His). In addition, plasma urea and plasma AA were measured. The diets were designated as P24 (control), P20, P20M, P16M and P16MH and contained energy from digestible crude protein (DCP) at 24%, 20% or 16% of total dietary metabolisable energy (ME). The 20% protein level was fed with or without Met and the 16% protein level was fed with Met and with or without His. The apparent total-tract digestibility (ATTD) of crude protein linearly decreased with decreasing dietary protein level. The ATTD of dry matter, organic matter and crude carbohydrates increased when wheat starch was added as a replacement for protein. The apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and ATTD methods were compared to determine the AA digestibility. The decreasing dietary protein supply decreased the ATTD of most of the AA: threonine, tryptophan (Trp), valine, alanine (Ala), aspartic acid (Asp), glutamic acid, glycine (Gly), proline (Pro), serine (Ser) and total AA. The AID of the AA was constant between diets. Diverging AA showed higher or lower digestibility when determined in the AID or ATTD methods. Isoleucine, lysine, Met, Ala and tyrosine showed higher levels of AID. Arginine, His, cysteine (Cys), Trp, Asp, Gly, Pro and Ser showed higher levels of ATTD, which may reflect the net loss of these AA in the large intestine. Met and His supplementation improved the ATTD and AID of the AA in question, respectively, but did not affect the other variables examined. N retention did not differ between diets and renal N excretion decreased with decreasing protein level; thus N utilisation improved. It was concluded that the protein supply and AA composition in low-protein diets with supplemented Met were adequate for adult blue foxes, since the lower protein supply improved N utilisation and did not affect N retention. However, His supplementation failed to reach the designed level and therefore showed no clear results.  相似文献

Despite their key role in biogeochemical processes, particularly the methane cycle, archaea are widely underrepresented in molecular surveys because of their lower abundance compared with bacteria and eukaryotes. Here, we use parallel high-resolution small subunit rRNA gene sequencing to explore archaeal diversity in 109 Swedish lakes and correlate archaeal community assembly mechanisms to large-scale latitudinal, climatic (nemoral to arctic) and nutrient (oligotrophic to eutrophic) gradients. Sequencing with universal primers showed the contribution of archaea was on average 0.8% but increased up to 1.5% of the three domains in forest lakes. Archaea-specific sequencing revealed that freshwater archaeal diversity could be partly explained by lake variables associated with nutrient status. Combined with deterministic co-occurrence patterns this finding suggests that ecological drift is overridden by environmental sorting, as well as other deterministic processes such as biogeographic and evolutionary history, leading to lake-specific archaeal biodiversity. Acetoclastic, hydrogenotrophic and methylotrophic methanogens as well as ammonia-oxidizing archaea were frequently detected across the lakes. Archaea-specific sequencing also revealed representatives of Woesearchaeota and other phyla of the DPANN superphylum. This study adds to our understanding of the ecological range of key archaea in freshwaters and links these taxa to hypotheses about processes governing biogeochemical cycles in lakes.  相似文献

The basic mechanism or mechanisms of the alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) are still unknown despite extensive research on alcoholism. There are, however, two major hypotheses or groups of hypotheses. Increasing experimental evidence supports adaptive changes in membrane lipids and/or proteins in response to prolonged high alcohol concentrations which might cause abnormal function after withdrawal of alcohol in general or more specifically in certain receptor sites. Changes in the formation or concentration of some receptor ligands as a consequence of alcohol metabolism are, however, also possible. Both can cause changes in neurotransmission, and these have been found in several systems. Although all studies do not agree, there seems to be some reduction in gabaergic, enkephalinergic, and possibly in dopaminergic function and increase in glutaminergic, adrenergic, cholinergic and possibly in serotoninergic and tryptaminergic activity at least in some neurons during AWS. These may be involved in producing some symptoms, but the variable whole AWS, particularly its two phases, remains to be explained.  相似文献
