Ground level ultraviolet-B (UV-B; 290–320 nm) fluxes in Antarctica have been increasing due to stratospheric ozone depletion. Although mat-forming cyanobacteria are major component of freshwater algal biomass in Antarctica, little is known about their response to increasing ultraviolet radiation (UVR). The present study evaluated the sensitivity to UVR of two strains of mat-forming cyanobacteria with different cell size, Phormidium murrayi (6.0 x 3.2 μm) and Schizothrix calcicola (2.2 x 2.3 μm). Cyanobacterial photosynthesis was measured under different UV spectral quality and quantity achieved by polychromatic filters with different cutoff wavelengths and neutral density screens. The productivity and irradiance data were used to generate biological weighting functions (BWF) for the assessment of UV inhibition on photosynthesis. The kinetics of UV inhibition, as determined by PAM fluorometry, differed between the two species so that inhibition of P. murrayi and S. calcicola were modeled based on UV-irradiance and cumulative exposure, respectively. After a one hour exposure, BWF's did not differ between the two isolates of cyanobacteria despite their differences in cell size. To evaluate the negative impact of increased UV-B exposure due to ozone depletion on cyanobacteria, the BWF's were applied to two solar spectra obtained from McMurdo Station, one on a day when the ozone hole was prominent (O3 = 170 Dobson units; DU = 10-3 cm O3), and the other on a day with high ozone concentration (O3 = 328 DU). The decrease in ozone level would reduce productivity by 3–8%. Seasonal variation of UVR has a bigger impact on cyanobacterial productivity than ozone depletion.  相似文献

This study presents an enhanced methodology for modelling the impacts of sea level rise on coastal wetlands. The tool integrates dGPS-calibrated LiDAR data, isostatic uplift and sediment accretion rates to predict the location and extent of plant communities at three non-contiguous micro-topographical coastal wetlands in Estonia by 2100 in response to global sea level rise. Scenarios were run including sediment accretion, elevated sediment accretion and then discounting sediment accretion and dGPS calibration for comparison. Results showed an increase in surface elevation (related to sediment accretion and isostatic uplift) resulting in a decrease in local sea level in the majority of sites and scenarios in the north of the country, although a rise in local sea level is predicted in sites with limited allochthonous sediment supply, predominantly impacting higher elevation plant communities. Wetlands situated on the west coast are likely to maintain equilibrium with sea level as a result of lower sedimentation and isostatic uplift than more northerly sites. This study shows that dGPS-calibrated LiDAR data and sediment accretion are essential to maintain model validity in Baltic coastal wetlands due to their low relief and could considerably improve current sea level rise impact models for other regions.  相似文献

Excised pea pods responded similarly to both the invasion of plant pathogenic fungi and the presence of bean tissue, bean pollen, and mouse tumor cells by synthesizing pisatin and by developing a characteristic yellow-green fluorescence. Both responses were dependent on RNA and protein synthesis. We examined responses of pial arteries and veins in situ to noradrenergic stimuli in the presence of histamine. Electrical stimulation of sympathetic nerves and perivascular microapplication of norepinephrine in mock cerebrospinal fluid produced constriction of arteries and veins in anesthetized cats. During simultaneous perivascular injection of histamine, these noradrenergic responses were attenuated or reversed. In both arteries and veins, constriction from sympathetic nerve stimulation was prevented by simultaneous application of the histamine receptor agonists, pyridylethylamine (H1) or impromidine (H2), results that suggest interference involving both types of histamine receptors. In arteries, impromidine, but not pyridylethylamine, inhibited constriction resulting from exogenous norepinephrine. Our findings indicate that histamine may have an inhibitory influence, exerted through both receptor types, on noradrenergic mechanisms in cerebral vessels.  相似文献

To examine the impact of projected climate changes on secondary succession, we exposed the same fallow soil with a common seed bank to an in situ gradient of urban to rural macroenvironments that differed in temperature and CO2 concentration ([CO2]). This gradient was established at three locations: Baltimore city center (urban), a city park on the outskirts of Baltimore (suburban), and an organic farm 87 km from the Baltimore city center site (rural). Over a five-year period, the urban site averaged 2.1°C warmer and had a [CO2] that was ~20% higher than at the rural location, indicating that this gradient was a reasonable surrogate for projected changes in those variables for this century. Previous work had demonstrated that other abiotic variables measured across the transect, including tropospheric ozone and nitrogen deposition, did not differ consistently. The first year of exposure resulted in (two- to threefold) greater aboveground biomass in the urban relative to the rural site, but with uniform species composition across sites. Simple regression of abiotic variables indicated that temperature and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) were the best predictors of plant biomass among locations. Stepwise multiple regressions were also performed to analyze the effect of more than one macroenvironmental variable on total plant biomass. The combination of daily CO2 concentration and nighttime temperature explained 87% (P < 0.01) of the variability in total biomass between sites. After five years, the species demography of the plant communities had changed significantly, with a greater ratio of perennials to annuals for the urban relative to the rural location. Greater first-year biomass and litter accumulation at the urban site may have suppressed the subsequent seed germination of annual species, accelerating changes in species composition. If urban macroenvironments reflect future global change conditions, these data suggest a faster rate of secondary succession in a warmer, higher [CO2] world.  相似文献

Membrane organization describes the relationship of proteins to the membrane, that is, whether the protein crosses the membrane or is integral to the membrane and its orientation with respect to the membrane. Membrane organization is determined primarily by the presence of two features which target proteins to the secretory pathway: the endoplasmic reticulum signal peptide and the ?-helical transmembrane domain. In order to generate membrane organization annotation of high quality, confidence and throughput, the Membrane Organization (MemO) pipeline was developed, incorporating consensus feature prediction modules with integration and annotation rules derived from biological observations. The pipeline classifies proteins into six categories based on the presence or absence of predicted features: Soluble, intracellular proteins; Soluble, secreted proteins; Type I membrane proteins; Type II membrane proteins; Multi-span membrane proteins and Glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchored membrane proteins. The MemO pipeline represents an integrated strategy for the application of state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools to the annotation of protein membrane organization, a property which adds biological context to the large quantities of protein sequence information available.  相似文献
