responses (GFR) in pigtail macaques. A human provided gaze cues by turning her head 90° in one of four directions. Head turns
were immediately followed by a facial movement (pucker, eyebrow raise, tongue protrusion, neutral), or were executed swiftly
(< 0.5 s), slowly (3 s) or whilst facing away from the monkeys. All monkeys reliably followed the gaze in all conditions with

Two different fructokinase isoforms of Arabidopsis thaliana have been identified and characterized by non-denaturing electrophoresis followed by activity-staining. The two fructokinases, fructokinase1 (FRK1) and fructokinase2 (FRK2), showed a high specificity for fructose and did not stain when glucose or mannose were used as substrate. Fructose and ATP at high concentrations (above 5 mM) induced a substrate inhibition of the two enzymatic activities. Arabidopsis FRK1 and FRK2 were capable of employing GTP, CTP, UTP and TTP as phosphate donors, although with a significantly lower efficiency than ATP. The two fructokinase activities were also activated by K+, at around 10–20 mM, and inhibited by ADP and AMP at concentrations above 10 mM. Finally, FRK1 and FRK2 showed a different expression pattern in the plant, with FRK1 being more abundant in the roots and FRK2 in the shoots. The results demonstrate a simple technique that provides important information about fructokinase activities in the plants and which can be useful for the analysis of Arabidopsis mutants. 相似文献

Background
The production of erythropoietin is triggered by impaired oxygen delivery to the kidney, either because of anemia or hypoxemia. High erythropoietin levels have been shown to predict the risk of death among patients with chronic heart failure. We investigated the prognostic value of elevated erythropoietin levels on mortality among very elderly people in the general population.Methods
The Leiden 85-plus Study is a population-based prospective follow-up study involving 599 people aged 85 years in Leiden, the Netherlands, enrolled between September 1997 and September 1999. Erythropoietin levels were determined at age 86. For this analysis, we included 428 participants with a creatinine clearance of at least 30 mL/min. Mortality data, recorded until Feb. 1, 2008, were obtained from the municipal registry.Results
During follow-up, 324 (75.7%) participants died. Compared with participants whose erythropoietin levels were in the lowest tertile (reference group), those whose levels were in the middle tertile had a 25% increased risk of death (hazard ratio [HR] 1.25, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.95–1.64), and those whose levels were in the highest tertile had a 73% increased risk (HR 1.73, 95% CI 1.32–2.26) (p value for trend < 0.01). The association between erythropoietin levels and mortality remained largely unchanged after we adjusted for sex, creatinine clearance, hemoglobin level, comorbidity, smoking status and C-reactive protein level, and was similar for deaths from cardiovascular and noncardiovascular causes.Interpretation
Among people aged 85 years and older, elevated erythropoietin levels were associated with an increased risk of death, independent of hemoglobin levels.Decreased oxygen availability in the kidney triggers the peritubular capillary lining cells within the kidney to produce erythropoietin — the principal regulator of red blood cell mass.1 Impaired oxygen delivery to the kidney can result from various pathophysiologic mechanisms, such as anemia, hypoperfusion due to renal arteriosclerosis, decreased renal blood flow or heart failure, and decreased oxygen saturation due to diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.1–5Studies involving patients with chronic heart failure have shown that high erythropoietin levels predict poor survival.6–11 However, whether this prognostic value is limited to patients with heart failure or whether it is generalizable to very elderly people regardless of specific pathologic conditions has not been studied. Isoelectric focusing (IEF) in thin capillaries is reviewed here. After an introduction on the genesis and chemistry of the carrier ampholyte buffers, different approaches to IEF are discussed and evaluated. The classical approach consists on IEF under conditions of suppressed electroosmotic (EOF) flow, usually obtained by covalently bonding hydrophilic polymers to the inner capillary wall. The other approach consists of IEF in dynamically (and partially) coated capillaries, so as to allow a reduced EOF flow to coexist with the IEF process, so that focusing and transport of the train of stacked bands occurs simultaneously. The various experimental parameters: focusing, elution and detection steps, pI measurements, as well as typical drawbacks, such as isoelectric precipitation are evaluated. The review ends with some examples of analytical separations, at the moment mostlyl limited to focusing of native hemoglobins (normal and point mutants). Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for the pandemic respiratory infectious disease COVID-19. However, clinical manifestations and outcomes differ significantly among COVID-19 patients, ranging from asymptomatic to extremely severe, and it remains unclear what drives these disparities. Here, we studied 159 sequentially enrolled hospitalized patients with COVID-19-associated pneumonia from Brescia, Italy using the VirScan phage-display method to characterize circulating antibodies binding to 96,179 viral peptides encoded by 1,276 strains of human viruses. SARS-CoV-2 infection was associated with a marked increase in immune antibody repertoires against many known pathogenic and non-pathogenic human viruses. This antiviral antibody response was linked to longitudinal trajectories of disease severity and was further confirmed in additional 125 COVID-19 patients from the same geographical region in Northern Italy. By applying a machine-learning-based strategy, a viral exposure signature predictive of COVID-19-related disease severity linked to patient survival was developed and validated. These results provide a basis for understanding the role of memory B-cell repertoire to viral epitopes in COVID-19-related symptoms and suggest that a unique anti-viral antibody repertoire signature may be useful to define COVID-19 clinical severity. 相似文献

We investigated whether lateral masking in the near-periphery, due to inhibitory lateral interactions at an early level of central visual processing, could be weakened by perceptual learning and whether learning transferred to an untrained, higher-level lateral masking known as crowding. The trained task was contrast detection of a Gabor target presented in the near periphery (4°) in the presence of co-oriented and co-aligned high contrast Gabor flankers, which featured different target-to-flankers separations along the vertical axis that varied from 2λ to 8λ. We found both suppressive and facilitatory lateral interactions at target-to-flankers distances (2λ - 4λ and 8λ, respectively) that were larger than those found in the fovea. Training reduces suppression but does not increase facilitation. Most importantly, we found that learning reduces crowding and improves contrast sensitivity, but has no effect on visual acuity (VA). These results suggest a different pattern of connectivity in the periphery with respect to the fovea as well as a different modulation of this connectivity via perceptual learning that not only reduces low-level lateral masking but also reduces crowding. These results have important implications for the rehabilitation of low-vision patients who must use peripheral vision to perform tasks, such as reading and refined figure-ground segmentation, which normal sighted subjects perform in the fovea. 相似文献
