We investigate an instance of conflict between mates over the sex ratio of their brood. We construct a kin-selection model for the evolution of the sex ratio assuming local resource competition (LRC) among females. We explore two basic scenarios: (a) the case where parents make simultaneous sex-ratio decisions (the simultaneous allocation model); and (b) the case where parental sex-ratio decisions occur one after the other (the sequential allocation model). In the simultaneous investment model, resolution of the conflict between mates depends on the extent to which relative paternal contribution influences the brood sex ratio. In the sequential allocation model, fathers determine primary sex-ratio through fertilization bias; then mothers modify the paternal sex-ratio decision by adjusting the level of investment of some resource that contributes to offspring survival. Under the sequential model, a compromise is always achieved; however this compromise favours one perspective or the other, depending on the extent to which maternal investment influences offspring survival. 相似文献

Natural resistance of mice to lethal ifections of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, strain Gilliam, is controlled by a single, autosomal, dominant gene, which we have designated Ric, with r and s representing the resistant nd susceptible alleles, respectively. Using three sets of recombinant inbred mouse strains (BXD, BXH, and BXJ), the Ric locus was mapped to Chromosome 5 closely linked to the retinal degeneration (rd) locus. This linkage was confirmed by a backcross analysis. Based on the RI strains and the C57BL/6Ty-le congenic strain (the only proven Ric-rd cross-over), we estimate the recombination frequency between Ric and rd to be 0.015. Three presumptive Ric-rd recombinants detected among 93 backcross mice may represent caes of incomplete penetrance of the resistance allele rather than recombination. Analyis of th C57BL/6JTy-le congenic strain indicates that Ric is proximal to rd on Chromosome 5. If so, the correct gene order is Pgm-1-W-Ric-rd-Gus. 相似文献

The growth hormone releasing hormone receptor (GHRHR) was mapped in the pig for study as a potential candidate gene in controlling pig quantitative growth and carcass characteristics. Primers were designed from the pig GHRHR sequence to amplify a 1·65-kb intronic fragment between exons 6 and 7. By using a pig–rodent somatic cell hybrid panel, GHRHR was mapped to pig chromosome 18 (SSC18) with 100% concordance, and the regional assignment was SSC18q24 with 89% concordance. The polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphisms (PCR–RFLPs) with Mse I and Taq I were developed to confirm this assignment with linkage analysis by using the European Pig Gene Mapping Project (PiGMaP) reference families. Pig GHRHR was mapped with strong linkage to SSC18 markers S0062 and S0120 (lod > 8). The GHRHR and IGFBP3 were found to map near to each other on human chromosome 7 (HSA7), and the pig IGFBP3 gene has been mapped to SSC18 by others. Our mapping of pig GHRHR increases the comparative information available on the SSC18 maps and further confirms the synteny conservation between HSA7 and SSC18. 相似文献

The response of alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) to lung injury plays a central role in the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis, but the mechanisms by which AECs regulate fibrotic processes are not well defined. We aimed to elucidate how transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ) signaling in lung epithelium impacts lung fibrosis in the intratracheal bleomycin model. Mice with selective deficiency of TGFβ receptor 2 (TGFβR2) in lung epithelium were generated and crossed to cell fate reporter mice that express β-galactosidase (β-gal) in cells of lung epithelial lineage. Mice were given intratracheal bleomycin (0.08 U), and the following parameters were assessed: AEC death by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP-mediated nick-end labeling assay, inflammation by total and differential cell counts from bronchoalveolar lavage, fibrosis by scoring of trichrome-stained lung sections, and total lung collagen content. Mice with lung epithelial deficiency of TGFβR2 had improved AEC survival, despite greater lung inflammation, after bleomycin administration. At 3 wk after bleomycin administration, mice with epithelial TGFβR2 deficiency showed a significantly attenuated fibrotic response in the lungs, as determined by semiquantitatve scoring and total collagen content. The reduction in lung fibrosis in these mice was associated with a marked decrease in the lung fibroblast population, both total lung fibroblasts and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition-derived (S100A4(+)/β-gal(+)) fibroblasts. Attenuation of TGFβ signaling in lung epithelium provides protection from bleomycin-induced fibrosis, indicating a critical role for the epithelium in transducing the profibrotic effects of this cytokine. 相似文献
