Climate instability strongly affects overwintering conditions in organisms living in a strongly seasonal environment and consequently their survival and population dynamics. Food, predation and density effects are also strong during winter, but the effect of fragmentation of ground vegetation on ground-dwelling small mammals is unknown. Here, we report the results of a winter experiment on the effects of habitat fragmentation and food on experimental overwintering populations of bank voles Myodes glareolus. The study was conducted in large outdoor enclosures containing one large, two medium-sized or four small habitat patches or the total enclosure area covered with protective tall-grass habitat. During the stable snow cover of midwinter, only food affected the overwintering success, body condition, trappability and earlier onset of breeding in bank voles. However, after the snow thaw in spring, habitat fragmentation gained importance again, and breeding activities increased the movements of voles in the most fragmented habitat. The use of an open, risky matrix area increased along the habitat fragmentation. Our experiment showed that long-lasting stable snow cover protects overwintering individuals in otherwise exposed and risky ground habitats. We conclude that a stable winter climate and snow cover should even out habitat fragmentation effects on small mammals. However, along prolonged snow-free early winter and in an earlier spring thaw, this means loss of protection by snow cover both in terms of thermoregulation and predation. Thus, habitat cover is important for the survival of small ground-dwelling boreal mammals also during the non-breeding season.  相似文献

Background

Muscle strength declines on average by one percent annually from midlife on. In postmenopausal women this decrement coincides with a rapid decline in estrogen production. The genetics underlying the effects of estrogen on skeletal muscle remains unclear. In the present study, we examined whether polymorphisms within COMT and ESR1 are associated with muscle properties and assessed their interaction and their combined effects with physical activity.

Methodology/Principal Findings

A cross-sectional data analysis was conducted with 434 63-76-year-old women from the population-based Finnish Twin Study on Aging. Body anthropometry, muscle cross-sectional area (mCSA), isometric hand grip and knee extension strengths, and leg extension power were measured. COMT Val158Met and ESR1 PvuII genotypes were determined by the RFLP method. mCSA differed by COMT genotypes (p = 0.014) being significantly larger in LL than HL individuals in unadjusted (p = 0.001) and age- and height-adjusted model (p = 0.004). When physical activity and age were entered into GEE model, COMT genotype had a significant main effect (p = 0.038) on mCSA. Furthermore, sedentary individuals with the HH genotype had lower muscle mass, strength and power, but they also appeared to benefit the most from physical activity. No association of ESR1 PvuII polymorphism with any of the muscle outcomes was observed.

Conclusions/Significance

The present study suggests that the COMT polymorphism, affecting the activity of the enzyme, is associated with muscle mass. Furthermore, sedentary individuals with potential high enzyme activity were the weakest group, but they may potentially benefit the most from physical activity. This observation elucidates the importance of both environmental and genetic factors in muscle properties.  相似文献

Cholesterol oxidation products, oxysterols, are thought to play a part in the initiation and development of human atherosclerotic lesions. Excessive body iron has been suggested to promote atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease through its pro-oxidative properties. In the present study, the associations between serum ferritin and plasma oxysterol concentrations were examined in 669 eastern Finnish men. Serum ferritin concentration had statistically significant (p <.05) direct correlations with most of the measured oxysterols. In multivariate adjusted regression models, serum ferritin concentration predicted significantly the levels of 27-hydroxycholesterol (beta = 0.13, p <.001), 7alpha-hydroxycholesterol (beta = 0.11, p =.005), 25-hydroxycholesterol (beta = 0.10, p =.007), 7-ketocholesterol (beta = 0.10, p =.009), and 7beta-hydroxycholesterol (beta = 0.10, p =.02). In conclusion, excess body iron, as assessed by serum ferritin, is associated with increased levels of circulating oxysterols, both of enzymatic and nonenzymatic origin, in man.  相似文献

Abstract

The moss flora of Europe and Macaronesia comprises 278 genera, 1292 species, 46 subspecies and 118 varieties. Of the total 1292 species, 53 are confined to Macaronesia and 21 are thought to be non-native. The checklist was derived from those for the various component countries and regions. It is based on results published up to the end of 2005. Subspecies and varieties are included; hybrids are omitted. The taxonomic hierarchy is based on one published by Goffinet & Buck in 2004. While it has been strongly influenced by results of modern molecular methods, there are still many remaining uncertainties, even at family level. Because of these uncertainties, taxonomic innovation has generally been avoided. There are four new combinations and one change of status.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the standing balance and the function of vastus medialis (VM) and biceps femoris (BF) muscles with surface electromyography (EMG). Fifty-four subjects with uni- or bilateral knee osteoarthritis (OA) (aged 50–69 years) and 53 age-matched randomly selected clinically and radiologically healthy men participated in this study. Postural control was assessed on a force platform with a bipedal stance with eyes open (EO) and closed (EC) and a monopedal stance with EO. The balance parameters, mean sway velocity, velocity along AP and ML axes, elliptical area, standard deviation of center of pressure, average radial displacement, mean frequency and frequency domain balance parameters and different power spectral density frequency bands were determined. Root mean square (RMS) for EMG amplitude, mean EMG frequency (fEMG,mean) and median EMG frequency (fEMG,med) of motor unit activity were calculated from the normalized EMG data. During bipedal stance with EC and EO, there were no significant differences in balance parameters between groups, but during bipedal stance with EO, the RMS in VM was about 56% higher (p < 0.05) in subjects with knee OA than in the control subjects and the values of fEMG,mean and fEMG,med were about 48% higher (p < 0.05) in control subjects than subjects with knee OA. It is concluded that subjects with knee OA do not have any standing balance deficit, but they do exhibit increased muscle activity in VM muscle compared to control subjects.  相似文献

Background

Cheap, reliable, point-of-care diagnostics is a necessity for the growing and aging population of the world. Paper substrate and printing method, combined together, are the cheapest possible method for generating high-volume diagnostic sensor platforms. Electrical transduction tools also minimize the cost and enhance the simplicity of the devices.

Methods

Standard surface characterization techniques, namely contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyze the growth of the organic thiol layers on top of the printed metal electrodes on paper substrates. The results were compared with those obtained by impedimetric electrical characterization method.

Results

This article reports the fabrication and characterization of printed metal electrodes and their functionalization by organic layers on paper and plastic substrates for biosensing and diagnostic applications. Impedimetric measurement is proposed as a simple, yet elegant, method of characterization of the organic layer growth.

Conclusions

Very good correlation was observed between the results of organic layer growth from different measurement methods, justifying the use of paper as a substrate, printing as a method for fabricating metal and organic layers and impedance as a suitable measurement method for hand-held diagnostic devices.

General significance

This result paves the way for the fabrication of more advanced bio-recognition layers for bio-affinity sensors using a printing technology that is compatible with flexible and cheap paper substrates. Estrogens as well as some antiestrogens have been shown to prevent bone loss in postmenopausal women. These compounds seem to inhibit bone resorption, but their anabolic effects have been less explored. In this study, bone marrow cultures were used to compare the effect of 17beta-estradiol (E2), and two triphenylethylene derivatives, tamoxifen (TAM), and FC1271a, and a benzothiophene derivative raloxifene (RAL) on differentiation of osteoblasts. All enhanced osteoblastic differentiation of 21-day cultures as indicated by increased mineralization and bone nodule formation. All, except RAL, stimulated cell proliferation during the first 6 days of the culture. However, in the presence of RAL the content of total protein was increased in 13-day cultures. SDS-PAGE and autoradiography of [14C]-proline labeled proteins revealed elevated level of the newly synthesized collagen type I. The pure antiestrogen ICI 182,780 abolished the increase of the specific activity of alkaline phosphatase by E2, TAM, and FC1271a but not the effect of RAL on protein synthesis. Our results show that E2 as well as TAM, FC1271a, and RAL stimulate bone formation in vitro but the mechanism of the anabolic action of RAL in bone clearly differs from that of E2, TAM, and FC1271a.  相似文献

Eco‐evolutionary responses of natural populations to spatial environmental variation strongly depend on the relative strength of environmental differences/natural selection and dispersal/gene flow. In absence of geographic barriers, as often is the case in lake ecosystems, gene flow is expected to constrain adaptive divergence between environments – favoring phenotypic plasticity or high trait variability. However, if divergent natural selection is sufficiently strong, adaptive divergence can occur in face of gene flow. The extent of divergence is most often studied between two contrasting environments, whereas potential for multimodal divergence is little explored. We investigated phenotypic (body size, defensive structures, and feeding morphology) and genetic (microsatellites) structure in threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) across five habitat types and two basins (North and South) within the geologically young and highly heterogeneous Lake Mývatn, North East Iceland. We found that (1) North basin stickleback were, on average, larger and had relatively longer spines than South basin stickleback, whereas (2) feeding morphology (gill raker number and gill raker gap width) differed among three of five habitat types, and (3) there was only subtle genetic differentiation across the lake. Overall, our results indicate predator and prey mediated phenotypic divergence across multiple habitats in the lake, in face of gene flow.  相似文献

It is unknown whether zoledronic acid (ZA) at clinically relevant doses is active against tumours not located in bone. Mice transgenic for the activated ErbB‐2 oncogene were treated with a cumulative number of doses equivalent to that recommended in human beings. A significant increase in tumour‐free and overall survival was observed in mice treated with ZA. At clinically compatible concentrations, ZA modulated the mevalonate pathway and affected protein prenylation in both tumour cells and macrophages. A marked reduction in the number of tumour‐associated macrophages was paralleled by a significant decrease in tumour vascularization. The local production of vascular endothelial growth factor and interleukin‐10 was drastically down‐regulated in favour of interferon‐γ production. Peritoneal macrophages and tumour‐associated macrophages of ZA‐treated mice recovered a full M1 antitumoral phenotype, as shown by nuclear translocation of nuclear factor kB, inducible nitric oxide synthase expression and nitric oxide production. These data indicate that clinically achievable doses of ZA inhibit spontaneous mammary cancerogenesis by targeting the local microenvironment, as shown by a decreased tumour vascularization, a reduced number of tumour‐associated macrophages and their reverted polarization from M2 to M1 phenotype.  相似文献
