Inheritance of body color in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens

The segregation frequencies of color phenotypes of F₁, F₂, and backcross progenies revealed that the body coloration of the brown planthopper, Nilaparavata lugens(Stål), exhibited multiple allelism. Monogene for color morphism exists in three allelic forms >-b ⁺ (brown or wild type), b ^o (orange) and b ^b (black). The dominance relationship was b ^b>b ⁺>b ^o. The relationship between phenotype and genotype in N. lugens was not fixed. The six possible genotypes produced eight phenotypes.

Résumé Les fréquences de ségrégation des différentes colorations de F₁, F₂ et des croisements en retour ont montré que la coloration du corps de Nilaparvata lugens est due à un multi-allèlisme. Le monogène pour la couleur existe sous trois formes allèliques: b⁺ (brun ou sauvage), b^o (orange) et b^b (noir). Les relations de dominance étaient: b^b>b⁺>b^o. On n'a pas établi les relatios entre phénotypes et génotypes chez N. lugens. Les 6 génotypes possibles produisent 8 phénotypes.

Production and characterization of a xylanase from Cyathus stercoreus

Cyathus stercoreus grown on wheat straw had a higher xylanase activity than when it was grown on rice husk or extracted hemicellulose. Inclusion of casein hydrolysate, Tween 80 and Mn²⁺ (at 0.02%, 0.2% and 0.075%, respectively) increased the production of extracellular xylanase. Optimal yield of xylanase (0.73 U/ml) was at pH 5.6 after 9 to 12 days at 30°C. Regulation and control of glucose overutilization in erythrocytes by vanadate

The insulin mimetic effect of vanadate inin vitro incubation of erythrocytes with high glucose concentrations showed an increase in sorbitol accumulation and glucose utilization using U-¹⁴C-glucose. Aldose reductase inhibitors and vanadate addition reversed the sorbitol accumulation, whereas insulin could not reverse it. Increased glucose utilization was also normalized with vanadium compounds. Increased activity of aldose reductase and sorbitol levels in diabetic animals were also normalized with vanadate treatment.     

Variations in the total sterols, free sterols and sterol esters concentration during embryogenesis in Dysdercus similis (Freeman)

In the present study fluctuations in the total sterols, free sterols and sterols esters concentration has been recorded day to day during embryogenesis. Oscillations in the total sterol correlated with the biosynthesis and/or utilization of cholesterol occur in the eggs while free sterols are used in the maintenance of cell membranes. The role of sterol ester is not known but their increase may be correlated with the accretion of oleic and linoleic fatty acids.
