Marine pest incursions can cause significant ongoing damage to aquaculture, biodiversity, fisheries habitat, infrastructure and social amenity. They represent a significant and ongoing economic burden. Marine pests can be introduced by several vectors including aquaculture, aquarium trading, commercial shipping, fishing, floating debris, mining activities and recreational boating. Despite the inherent risks, there is currently relatively little routine surveillance of marine pest species conducted in the majority of countries worldwide. Accurate and rapid identification of marine pest species is central to early detection and management. Traditional techniques (e.g. physical sampling and sorting), have limitations, which has motivated some progress towards the development of molecular diagnostic tools. This review provides a brief account of the techniques traditionally used for detection and describes developments in molecular-based methods for the detection and surveillance of marine pest species. Recent advances provide a platform for the development of practical, specific, sensitive and rapid diagnosis and surveillance tools for marine pests for use in effective prevention and control strategies. 相似文献

Protected areas (PAs) on tropical mountains undergo greater forest destruction in their lower altitudes. We compared the extent of forested, nonforested, and fragmented areas between lowland (<1000 m asl) and montane zones of the Blue Mountains inside the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park established in Jamaica in 1993. We found that in 2008, inside the montane zone, only 4 percent of forest was cleared, and forest fragmentation was minimal. In the lowland zone, however, the percentage of forest cleared was seven times as high, and the density of fragments was 11-fold higher. We established twenty-five 0.04 ha lowland plots; ordination of tree species composition in these plots reflected a rainfall gradient, showing that plots on the wetter northern side of the Blue Mountains were floristically different from those on the drier southern side. The conservation value of the remaining lowland forest is high because of its high endemism (18% of species in our plots) and beta diversity. In addition, IUCN Red List data show that about 71 percent of threatened tree species in the Blue Mountains grow in the lowland region, 92 percent of which are endemic. From these findings, we identify a ‘protected area hotspot zone’, which lies between the PA boundary and the core high-altitude zone, and which should be instituted in IUCN categories I and II PAs. 相似文献

The relationship between numerical advantage and competitive ability is a fundamental component in contests between groups of social animals. An individual's ability to correctly assess the numerical state of its group is of vital importance. In addition to numerical dominance, the group's fighting ability also plays an important role in competitive interactions. By staging experimental fights between two Formica ant species, I show that Formica xerophila are able to assess their own group's strength prior to any competitive encounter. Ants that perceive themselves as part of a large group act more aggressively toward a competitor than ants that perceive themselves as isolated individuals. This increase in aggression improves F. xerophila's competitive ability. Furthermore, the number of individuals in a contest was found to affect competitive ability. In contests with equal number of competitors, groups of F. xerophila were more successful than individual F. xerophila. Contrary to previous predictions using Lanchester's laws of fighting, F. xerophila's ability to kill competitors increased nonlinearly with group size. This nonlinearity was due to the collective fighting strategy of an F. xerophila group isolating and engaging a single Formica integroides competitors. 相似文献

The growth of cysts of Echinococcus multilocularis in T-cell depleted A/J mice was studied. Adult thymectomy enhances the metastasis of hydatid cysts but does not significantly affect the total cyst weight. Combined thymectomy and antithymocyte serum (ATS) treatment also increases the metastatic dissemination of the parasite and also significantly increases cyst loads. Ultraviolet reflectance of plumage for parent-offspring communication in the great tit (Parus major)
Ultraviolet (UV) reflectance has been implicated in mate selection.Yet, in some bird species the plumage of young varies in UVreflectance already in the nest and long before mate choiceand sexual selection come into play. Most birds molt the juvenilebody plumage before reaching sexual maturity, and thus, someconspicuous traits of the juvenile body plumage may rather haveevolved by natural selection, possibly via predation or parentalpreference. This second hypothesis is largely untested and predictsa differential allocation of food between fledging and totalindependence, which is a time period of 2–3 weeks whereoffspring mortality is also highest. Here, we test the predictionthat parents use the individual variation in UV reflectanceamong fledglings for differential food allocation. We manipulatedUV reflectance of the plumage of fledgling great tits Parusmajor by treating chest and cheek feathers with a lotion thateither did or did not contain UV blockers and then recordedfood allocation by parents in an outdoor design simulating postfledgingconditions. The visible spectrum was minimally affected by thistreatment. Females were found to feed UV-reflecting offspringpreferentially, whereas males had no preference. It is the firstevidence showing that the UV reflectance of the feathers ofyoung birds has a signaling function in parent–offspringcommunication and suggests that the UV traits evolved via parentalpreference. 相似文献

This article features a new production technology for nanoparticles comprised of multicomponent polymeric complexes that are candidates for delivery vehicles of biological molecules such as proteins and drugs. Biocompatible and mostly natural polymers are fabricated into thermodynamically stable nanoparticles insoluble in water and buffered media, in the absence of organic solvents, using two types of processing: batch and continuous. Careful choice of construction materials and the superposition of several interacting principles during their production allow for the customization of the physicochemical properties of the structures. Detailed experiments in batch and continuous systems allowed time-dependent stoichiometric characterization of the production process and an understanding of fundamental assembly principles of such supramolecular structures. Continuous-flow production is shown to provide more consistent data in terms of product quality and consistency, with further possibility of process development and commercialization. The development of nanoparticles using the described methodology is expected to lead to a flexible nanoparticle drug delivery system for medical applications, which has particular bearing to the slow release of drugs, antigens (for vaccine design), and genes (for gene therapy). Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) is a neuropeptide present in the brain of all vertebrates. For the characterization of MCH receptors, a monoiodinated [Phe13, Tyr19]-MCH radioligand analogue was developed. The high susceptibility of [125I]-[Phe13, Tyr19]-MCH to oxidative damage and its very lipophilic nature made it necessary to develop new MCH radioligands. To increase the stability, native methionines were replaced by non-sulphur containing amino acid residues. In one analogue, the L-enantiomer of the phenylalanine residue at position 13 was substituted by the D-enantiomer, which increased the relative affinity of the ensuing [125I]-[D-Phe13, Tyr19]-MCH about 7-fold. The different analogues were iodinated by an enzymatic reaction and used for binding studies with mouse melanoma cells. [125I]-[Met(O)4,8, Phe13, Tyr19]-MCH and [125I]-[Hse4,8, Phe13, Tyr19]-MCH showed only about 19% of total binding and [125I]-[Ser4,8, Phe13, Tyr19]-MCH displayed about 44% of total binding when compared with [125I]-[Phe13, Tyr19]-MCH. Non-specific binding for all tracers was below 11% of total binding of [125I]-[Phe13, Tyr19]-MCH binding. [125I]-[D-Phe13, Tyr19]-MCH was used for saturation binding studies and revealed a KD of 122.7 +/- 15.3 pmol/l. A recombinant fragment of the human receptor for epidermal growth factor containing both its extracellular domain and its membrane-spanning segment, when dissolved with Triton X-100, was observed to dimerize in response to addition of epidermal growth factor (EGF) even at the lowest concentration of this fragment that could be assayed (4 nM). Consequently, the dissociation constant for the dimer of this fragment is at least 10,000-fold smaller than that for dimers of soluble, recombinant forms of the extracellular domain lacking the membrane-spanning segment. The second-order rate constant for dimerization of the fragment containing the extracellular domain and the membrane-spanning segment was estimated to be greater than 0.3 nM(-1) min(-1), more than 10-fold that of the native enzyme under the same conditions. This result suggests that the cytoplasmic domain of the intact enzyme sterically hinders its dimerization. When EGF is removed from the dimer of the fragment, the rate constant for its dissociation is greater than 0.2 min(-1), more than 40-fold that of the native enzyme. This result suggests that interfaces between cytoplasmic domains of intact EGF receptor impart significant stabilization to the dimer of the enzyme. 相似文献
