Shell rotating behavior of the hermit crabPagurus geminus was investigated. In preliminary observations, hermit crabs motivated to change shells rotated presented shells, filled with
sand, in a way that dislodged the inside material. In order to determine if this behavior is stereotyped, or flexible and
dependent on shell type, hermit crabs were tested with ordinary dextral shells ofLatirulus nagasakiensis and sinistral shells ofAntiplanes contraria. Sinistral shells are not normally encountered by hermit crabs. Their rotation of the dextral shell to the left was adequate
for sand discharge. Sinistral shells were rotated in both directions. Analysis of recorded videotapes showed that variation
in rotation direction could be attributed to variation in the position of the crab relative to the shell. When the crab faced
the shell aperture from the inner lip, it rotated the sinistral shell to the right, and to opposite direction when it faced
from the outer lip side. The crab always pushed the upper side of the horizontally laid shell, regardless of shell type or

A promoter selection vector for Clostridium perfringens genes was constructed from a C. perfringens-Escherichia coli shuttle vector, pJIR418. The plasmid carries a promoterless chloramphenicol acetyltransferase gene (catP), derived from pIP401, downstream of the multiple cloning sites of pUC18. When a promoter region of the phospholipase C gene was inserted into one of the cloning sites, derivatives of C. perfringens strain 13 carrying the resultant plasmid acquired resistance to chloramphenicol. Endogenous gibberellins were analyzed from a parasitic plant, clover broomrape (Orobanche minor Smith), and its host, clover (Trifolium repens L.). Members of both the early-13- and the early-non-hydroxylation pathways were identified from both the parasite and the host (GA12, GA24, GA9 GA4, GA44, GA19, GA20, and GA1 from clover broomrape; GA9, GA4, GA44, GA19, GA20, and GA1 from clover). Quantitative analyses showed that GA44 was present at high levels in both host and parasite. The similarity in the gibberellins suggests the possibility that the major gibberellins in clover broomrape are transported from clover. However gibberellins such as GA58, GA38, and notably GA47 which was identified from a plant for the first time were detected only from clover broomrape, suggesting that the parasite may have the ability to produce at least those gibberellins 相似文献

A procedure for the mass propagation of multiple shoots of Stevia rebaudiana is described. Isolated shoot primordia were used as the inoculum to obtain clusters of shoot primordia. Such clusters were grown in a 500 liter bioreactor to obtain shoots. A total of 64.6 Kg of shoots were propagated from 460 g of the inoculated shoot primordia. The number of chromosomes in the yeast Saccharomyces exiguuswas determined to be thirteen by two-dimensional pulsed-fieldgel electrophoresis. The thirteen chromosomes ranged in DNAsize from 520 to 2,600 kbp, with a total length of approximately14 Mbp. Numbers I to XIII were assigned to the chromosomes indecreasing order of DNA length. Southern hybridization analysisusing total DNAs from S. exiguus and S. cerevisiae as probesshowed that there was no significant homology between the chromosomalDNAs of the two species, except in the case of the chromosomalDNA that included rDNA. When rDNA and genes LEU2, TRP1, URA3and HO of S. cerevisiae were used as hybridization probes, itwas apparent that S. exiguus had DNA sequences homologous tothe rDNA and to the LEU2 and HO genes. The purposes of this study were two-fold. First, it compared Japanese infants' (N=129) abilities to regulate emotions at 13
months and 18 months of age, using the Strange Situation procedure. Second, it examined the relationship between the development
of emotion regulation and the mother's emotion expression style as assessed by the Emotion Expression Style Questionnaire
(EESQ). The total number of subjects who successfully completed all 8 episodes of the Strange Situation procedure increased
significantly during the aging between 13 and 18 months of age, indicating that as a group these infants increased their ability
to cope with stressful situations. However, infants who had mothers with negative emotion expression styles did not show greater
capacity for emotion regulation at 18 months. These findings suggest that the development of emotion regulation is mediated
