Background

Do brain training games work? The beneficial effects of brain training games are expected to transfer to other cognitive functions. Yet in all honesty, beneficial transfer effects of the commercial brain training games in young adults have little scientific basis. Here we investigated the impact of the brain training game (Brain Age) on a wide range of cognitive functions in young adults.

Methods

We conducted a double-blind (de facto masking) randomized controlled trial using a popular brain training game (Brain Age) and a popular puzzle game (Tetris). Thirty-two volunteers were recruited through an advertisement in the local newspaper and randomly assigned to either of two game groups (Brain Age, Tetris). Participants in both the Brain Age and the Tetris groups played their game for about 15 minutes per day, at least 5 days per week, for 4 weeks. Measures of the cognitive functions were conducted before and after training. Measures of the cognitive functions fell into eight categories (fluid intelligence, executive function, working memory, short-term memory, attention, processing speed, visual ability, and reading ability).

Results and Discussion

Our results showed that commercial brain training game improves executive functions, working memory, and processing speed in young adults. Moreover, the popular puzzle game can engender improvement attention and visuo-spatial ability compared to playing the brain training game. The present study showed the scientific evidence which the brain training game had the beneficial effects on cognitive functions (executive functions, working memory and processing speed) in the healthy young adults.

Conclusions

Our results do not indicate that everyone should play brain training games. However, the commercial brain training game might be a simple and convenient means to improve some cognitive functions. We believe that our findings are highly relevant to applications in educational and clinical fields.

The total synthesis of ( + )-methyI phaseate (2b) and its epimer (25) is described. The known β- ketoester (8), which was prepared from ( — )-/f-pinene (4), was converted to a key intermediate (5) via a 1, 4-dioxoester (7). The reaction of 5 with a lithium reagent of the acetylene TBDMS ether (6) in THF-HMPA at — 70°C afforded the desired acetylene alcohol (17) and its epimer (18) in high yields. 17 was transformed into ( + )-methyl phaseate (2b). We have recently shown that the protective mechanism of ischemic preconditioning (PC) is impaired in the myocardium that survived infarction and underwent postinfarct ventricular remodeling. In this study, we examined the hypothesis that failure of PC to activate PKC- underlies the refractoriness of the remodeling heart to PC. Circumflex coronary arteries were ligated in rabbits to induce infarction and subsequent ventricular remodeling, and only sham operations were performed in controls. Hearts were isolated before (i.e. 4 days later) or after (i.e. 2 weeks later) remodeling of the left ventricle and used for isolated buffer-perfused heart experiments. Myocardial infarction was induced in isolated hearts by 30 min global ischemia/2 h reperfusion, and its size was measured by tetrazolium staining. Using separate groups of hearts, tissue biopsies were taken before and after PC, and PKC translocation was assessed by Western blotting. Areas infarcted in vivo by coronary ligation (CL) were excluded from subsequent infarct size/PKC analyses. In the hearts 4 days after CL, PC with 2 cycles of 5 min ischemia/5 min reperfusion induced PKC- translocation from cytosol to particulate fractions and limited infarct size to 40% of control value. In the hearts remodeled 2 weeks after CL, PC failed to induce PKC- translocation and infarct size limitation. In this group, PKC activity and hemodynamic responses to adenosine were similar to those in sham-operated controls. When remodeling after CL was prevented by valsartan infusion (10 mg/kg/day), an angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor blocker, PC could induce both infarct limitation and PKC- translocation. The present results suggest that persistent activation of AT1 receptors during remodeling disturbed the PC signaling between G proteins and PKC-, which underlies the refractoriness of the remodeled myocardium to PC.  相似文献

Introduction

The aim of the present study was to investigate how the speed of observed action affects the excitability of the primary motor cortex (M1), as assessed by the size of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

Methods

Eighteen healthy subjects watched a video clip of a person catching a ball, played at three different speeds (normal-, half-, and quarter-speed). MEPs were induced by TMS when the model''s hand had opened to the widest extent just before catching the ball (“open”) and when the model had just caught the ball (“catch”). These two events were locked to specific frames of the video clip (“phases”), rather than occurring at specific absolute times, so that they could easily be compared across different speeds. MEPs were recorded from the thenar (TH) and abductor digiti minimi (ADM) muscles of the right hand.

Results

The MEP amplitudes were higher when the subjects watched the video clip at low speed than when they watched the clip at normal speed. A repeated-measures ANOVA, with the factor VIDEO-SPEED, showed significant main effects. Bonferroni''s post hoc test showed that the following MEP amplitude differences were significant: TH, normal vs. quarter; ADM, normal vs. half; and ADM, normal vs. quarter. Paired t-tests showed that the significant MEP amplitude differences between TMS phases under each speed condition were TH, “catch” higher than “open” at quarter speed; ADM, “catch” higher than “open” at half speed.

Conclusions

These results indicate that the excitability of M1 was higher when the observed action was played at low speed. Our findings suggest that the action observation system became more active when the subjects observed the video clip at low speed, because the subjects could then recognize the elements of action and intention in others.  相似文献

Aims

The mechanisms underlying magnesium (Mg) uptake by plant roots remain to be fully elucidated. In particular, there is little information about the effects of Mg deficiency on Mg uptake activity. A Mg uptake kinetic study is essential for better understanding the Mg uptake system.

Methods

We performed a Mg uptake tracer experiment in rice plants using 28?Mg.

Results

Mg uptake was mediated by high- and low-affinity transport systems. The K m value of the high-affinity transport system was approximately 70 μM under Mg-deficient conditions. The Mg uptake activity was promoted by Mg deficiency, which in turn fell to the basal level after 5- min of Mg resupply. The induced uptake rate was inhibited by ionophore treatment, suggesting that an energy-dependent uptake system is enhanced by Mg deficiency.

Conclusions

The Mg uptake changes rapidly with Mg conditions in rice, as revealed by a 28?Mg tracer experiment. This technique is expected to be applicable for Mg uptake analyses, particularly in mutants or other lines.
