The potential causes of the variable nature of recruitment of marine organisms can be inferred from the scales over which they vary. Sampling for recruits of Semibalanus cariosus on the intertidal concrete tetrapods at 21 fishing ports along the Kameda Peninsula, southern Hokkaido, Japan, was conducted at the end of the recruitment season in 1994 at three spatial scales: at each fishing port, separated by several km; at two sites at each fishing port, separated by several hundred m; and on three blocks at each site, separated by 1–2 m. At all spatial scales, recruitment intensity was independent of adult densities. Recruitment densities significantly varied within all spatial-scales, however, 85.6% of the total variances was estimated to be due to variation among ports. Such km-scale variation of recruitment intensities coincided with the hydrographic pattern of the direction of coastal current. 相似文献

To understand the immune mechanism suggested in HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (HAM/TSP), we investigated T cell response to proteolipid protein (PLP). Because of high autologous proliferative response (APR) of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in culture, the lymphocyte proliferation assay was not useful in this disease. Unexpectedly, however, APR was profoundly (70–98%) suppressed in 6 of 9 cases when PLP peptide 105-124 was added in the culture. PLP peptide 85-104 or 145-159 also suppressed APR in a few cases. Time course study showed that the peptide-mediated suppression became apparent after day 4 in culture. The results can be interpreted as that suppressor cells recognizing the PLP peptides were present in the PBMC of HAM/TSP patients and suppressed the APR as the consequence of antigen specific response. This may indicate that a T cell response to certain PLP determinants is involved in the pathomechanism of HAM/TSP at least in part. The chorion of unfertilized medaka Oryzias latipes eggs consists of two major proteins (77–73 and 49 kDa) and a minor 150 kDa protein. Upon fertilization, these major chorion proteins are polymerized to insoluble high molecular weight proteins via the temporary formation of several new proteins (132, 114, 62 and 61 kDa). Increasing chorion toughness is closely related to the formation of high molecular weight proteins and the increasing insolubility of the chorion proteins. The changes in chorion proteins and hardening could be induced in vitro in isolated chorions by an egg exudate, which includes cortical alveolar contents. The effects of temperature and pH on the egg exudate-induced changes in chorion proteins were examined in the present study. The major proteins could be digested by proteolytic enzymes. The 49 kDa protein was PAS-positive. Analysis with polyclonal antibodies against the major proteins demonstrated that the temporarily formed 62 and 61 kDa proteins were derived from the 77–73 kDa protein and that higher molecular weight proteins, newly formed in the process of chorion hardening, contained the same epitopes as did the 77–73 and 49 kDa proteins. The results suggest that the changes in chorion proteins of the medaka egg at the time of fertilization can be induced by an enzyme(s) released from the egg cortex into the perivitelline space. 相似文献

Thepresent study tested this anatomic hypothesis by comparing themechanics of the paralyzed pharynx in OSA patients and in normalsubjects. According to evaluation of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB)by nocturnal oximetry, subjects were divided into three groups: normalgroup (n = 17), SDB-1(n = 18), and SDB-2(n = 22). The static pressure-arearelationship of the passive pharynx was quantified under generalanesthesia with complete paralysis. Age and body mass index werematched among the three groups. The site of the primary closure was thevelopharynx in 49 subjects and the oropharynx in only 8 subjects.Distribution of the location of the primary closure did not differamong the groups. Closing pressure(PC) of the velopharynx forSDB-1 and SDB-2 groups (0.90 ± 1.34 and 2.78 ± 2.78 cmH2O, respectively) wassignificantly higher than that for the normal group (3.77 ± 3.44 cmH2O;P < 0.01). Maximal velopharyngealarea for the normal group (2.10 ± 0.85 cm2) was significantly greaterthan for SDB-1 and SDB-2 groups (1.15 ± 0.46 and 1.06 ± 0.75 cm2, respectively). Theshape of the pressure-area curve for the velopharynx differed betweennormal subjects and patients with SDB, being steeper in slope nearPC in patients with SDB.Multivariate analysis of mechanical parameters and oxygen desaturationindex (ODI) revealed that velopharyngealPC was the only variable highly correlated with ODI. VelopharyngealPC was associated withoropharyngeal PC, suggestingmechanical interdependence of these segments. We conclude that thepassive pharynx is more narrow and collapsible in sleep-apneic patientsthan in matched controls and that velopharyngeal PC is the principal correlate ofthe frequency of nocturnal desaturations. 相似文献

Previous studies showed that 2-ethyl-3-methoxycarbonyl-1-(p-tolylcarbamoyl) isourea acts as a potent GA3-synergist in stimulating shoot growth of rice seedlings. Studies with several structurally related compounds show that the alkoxycarbonylcarbamoyl-isourea or -isothiourea skeleton is required for biological activity. Any chemical deletion from this skeleton causes complete loss of activity. Changes in the two-dimensional SDS-electrophoretic patterns of extracts of maturing denuded oocytes of the medaka ( Oryzias latipes ) were surveyed. In oocytes without follicular constituents several proteins became detectable in the area between the acidic and slightly basic proteins on the two-dimensional electrophoretograms, while a few of the protein spots disappeared during the process of oocyte maturation. The former proteins were detected also in oocytes that were induced to mature in vivo without breakdown of the germinal vesicle. Several proteins newly observed in extracts of post-vitellogenic oocytes during maturation after breakdown of the germinal vesicle were also identified by two-dimensional electrophoresis. Of several proteins that exhibited noticeable changes in maturing oocytes, only one spot incorporated 14 C-labeled amino acid during maturation, suggesting that post-translational modification of many proteins occurred during oocyte maturation. 相似文献
