The apple snail Pomacea canaliculata is an invasive species and a serious pest of rice in many Asian countries. We studied predatory activities of various animals
living in Japanese freshwater habitats, by keeping each individual of a potential predator species with 36 snails of various
sizes for three days in the aquarium. Forty-six species were tested, and 26 in eight classes fed on small snails. A species
of leech, crabs, the common carp, turtles, the mallard duck and the Norway rat attacked even adult snails of 20–30 mm in shell
height. These findings will be helpful in identifying effective predators for biological control of the pest snail. In addition,
most of the animals attacking snails are reported to be common in rivers or ponds, but few live in modernized paddy fields
having little connections with natural water systems. This may be a reason why this snail maintains large populations in paddy

Isolation of mitotic chromosomes using flow cytometry is an attractive way to dissect nuclear genomes into their individual chromosomal components or portions of them. This approach is especially useful in plants with complex genomes, where it offers a targeted and hence economical approach to genome analysis and gene cloning. In several plant species, DNA of flow-sorted chromosomes has been used for isolation of molecular markers from specific genome regions, for physical mapping using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), for integration of genetic and physical maps and for construction of chromosome-specific DNA libraries, including those cloned in bacterial artificial chromosome vectors. Until now, chromosome analysis and sorting using flow cytometry (flow cytogenetics) has found little application in barley (2n = 14, 1C ∼ 5,100 Mbp) because of the impossibility of discriminating and sorting individual chromosomes, except for the smallest chromosome 1H and some translocation chromosomes with DNA content significantly different from the remaining chromosomes. In this work, we demonstrate that wheat–barley ditelosomic addition lines can be used to sort any arm of barley chromosomes 2H–7H. Thus, the barley genome can be dissected into fractions representing only about 6–12% of the total genome. This advance makes the flow cytogenetics an attractive tool, which may greatly facilitate genome analysis and gene cloning in barley. 相似文献

The presence of an adenylate translocator in the envelope membranesof proplastids isolated from the cultured cells of tobacco (Nicotianatabacum L. cv. BY2) was examined by means of transport experimentsusing the silicone oil filtering centrifugation technique. Itwas observed that proplastids can import [3H]ATP, [3H]ADP, [3H]AMPand less specifically ADP-[14C]Glc which can eventually be usedfor starch biosynthesis. Eotaxin-3/CCL26 is a functional ligand for CCR3 and abundantly produced by IL-4-/IL-13-stimulated vascular endothelial cells. CCL26 also functions as a natural antagonist for CCR1, CCR2, and CCR5. In this study, we report that CCL26 is yet a functional ligand for CX3CR1, the receptor for fractalkine/CX3CL1, which is expressed by CD16(+) NK cells, cytotoxic effector CD8(+) T cells, and CD14(low)CD16(high) monocytes. Albeit at relatively high concentrations, CCL26 induced calcium flux and chemotaxis in mouse L1.2 cells expressing human CX3CR1 but not mouse CX3CR1 and competed with CX3CL1 for binding to CX3CR1. In chemotaxis assays using human PBMCs, CCL26 attracted not only eosinophils but also CD16(+) NK cells, CD45RA(+)CD27(-)CD8(+) T cells, and CD14(low)CD16(high) monocytes. Intraperitoneal injection of CCL26 into mice rapidly recruited mouse eosinophils and intravenously transferred human CD16(+) NK cells into the peritoneal cavity. IL-4-stimulated HUVECs produced CCL26 and efficiently induced adhesion of cells expressing CX3CR1. Real-time PCR showed that skin lesions of psoriasis consistently contained CX3CL1 mRNA but not CCL26 mRNA, whereas those of atopic dermatitis contained CCL26 mRNA in all samples but CX3CL1 mRNA in only about half of the samples. Nevertheless, the skin lesions from both diseases consistently contained CX3CR1 mRNA at high levels. Thus, CCL26 may be partly responsible for the recruitment of cells expressing CX3CR1 in atopic dermatitis particularly when the expression of CX3CL1 is low. Collectively, CCL26 is another agonist for CX3CR1 and may play a dual role in allergic diseases by attracting eosinophils via CCR3 and killer lymphocytes and resident monocytes via CX3CR1. 相似文献

Comparative studies were made of the polymerization of l-aspartic and l-glutamic acid dialkyl esters using polyethylene glycol–modified papain as a catalyst in phosphate buffer (pH 7.5) and in benzene. Changes in the substrate specificity of papain and in the composition of oligomerized products were observed. In the buffer, the diethyl and di-n-propyl esters of l-glutamic acid were sufficiently converted to high molecular weight oligomers with the accumulation of dimer and trimer, but l-aspartic acid esters were very poor substrates. In benzene, l-aspartic acid esters became more reactive than L-glutamic acid esters. In particular, from l-aspartic acid dimethyl ester the product, which was mainly composed of heptamer to decamer, was obtained in a 90% yield. The reaction in benzene required desalted substrates and a small amount of water to proceed extensively. 相似文献

Endothelin-1 (Edn1), originally identified as a vasoconstrictor peptide, is involved in the development of cranial/cardiac neural crest-derived tissues and organs. In craniofacial development, Edn1 binds to Endothelin type-A receptor (Ednra) to induce homeobox genes Dlx5/Dlx6 and determines the mandibular identity in the first pharyngeal arch. However, it remains unsolved whether this pathway is also critical for pharyngeal arch artery development to form thoracic arteries. Here, we show that the Edn1/Ednra signaling is involved in pharyngeal artery development by controlling the fate of neural crest cells through a Dlx5/Dlx6-independent mechanism. Edn1 and Ednra knock-out mice demonstrate abnormalities in pharyngeal arch artery patterning, which include persistent first and second pharyngeal arteries, resulting in additional branches from common carotid arteries. Neural crest cell labeling with Wnt1-Cre transgene and immunostaining for smooth muscle cell markers revealed that neural crest cells abnormally differentiate into smooth muscle cells at the first and second pharyngeal arteries of Ednra knock-out embryos. By contrast, Dlx5/Dlx6 knockout little affect the development of pharyngeal arch arteries and coronary arteries, the latter of which is also contributed by neural crest cells through an Edn-dependent mechanism. These findings indicate that the Edn1/Ednra signaling regulates neural crest differentiation to ensure the proper patterning of pharyngeal arch arteries, which is independent of the regional identification of the pharyngeal arches along the dorsoventral axis mediated by Dlx5/Dlx6. 相似文献

The proteomic response to bacterial infection in a teleost fish (Paralichthys olivaceus) infected with Streptococcus parauberis was analyzed using label-free protein quantitation coupled with LC-MS(E) tandem mass spectrometry. A total of 82 proteins from whole kidney, a major lymphoid organ in this fish, were found to be differentially expressed between healthy and diseased fish analyzed 6, 24, 72 and 120 h post-infection. Among the differentially expressed proteins, those involved in mediating immune responses (e.g., heat shock proteins, cathepsins, goose-type lysozyme and complement components) were most significantly up-regulated by infection. In addition, cell division cycle 48 (CDC48) and calreticulin, which are associated with cellular recovery and glycoprotein synthesis, were up-regulated in the universal protein group, whereas the other proteins in that group were down-regulated. There was continuous activation of expression of immune-associated proteins during infection, but there was also loss of expression of proteins not involved in immune function. We expect that our findings regarding immune response at the protein level would offer new insight into the systemic response to bacterial infection of a major immune organ in teleost fish. 相似文献
