Suicide rates are higher at high altitudes, and some hypothesize that hypoxia is the cause. There may be a significant correlation between rates of depression and altitude, but little data exist outside the United States. The purpose of the present study is to conduct a survey of depression among the elderly highlanders in Asia. We enrolled 114 persons aged 60 years or older (mean, 69.2 ± 6.7 years; women, 58.8 %) in Domkhar (altitude, 3800 m), Ladakh, India and 173 ethnic Tibetans (mean, 66.5 ± 6.1 years; women, 61.3 %) in Yushu (altitude, 3700 m), Qinghai Province, China. The two-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) and the geriatric depression scale were administered. A psychiatrist interviewed the subjects who had a positive score on the PHQ-2. The results of the interview with the residents conducted by the specialist showed that two cases (1.8 %) from Domkhar and four (2.3 %) from Qinghai had depression. Despite the high altitude, the probability of depression was low in elderly highlander in Ladakh and Qinghai. Our finding seems to indicate that cultural factors such as religious outlook and social/family relationship inhibit the development of depression.  相似文献

Changes in auditory event related potentials (ERPs) as a function of frequency of tones ranging from 500 Hz to 8,000 Hz were examined under various hypobaric hypoxia conditions of simulated high altitudes up to 6,000 m. A sequence of P1-N1-P2 components, corresponding to those of the human subject, was observed with the monkey's ERPs. These component amplitudes changed as a function of frequency of tone. The relationship revealed an inverted U curve with a maximum amplitude at a tone of 2,000 Hz. The following results under hypoxia were noted: marked reduction of amplitude in ERPs induced by hypoxia linked only to a tone's particular frequency, especially for 2,000 Hz. The delay of latency in the respective components of the ERPs was dependent on the degree of hypoxia. These findings seem to suggest the anatomical bases of the neural generators contributing to each component of the ERPs. The effects of medium ammonium-nitrate ratio on cell proliferation were investigated using a low cell-density culture of Asparagus officinalis L., which was triggered by a peptidal plant growth factor, phytosulfokine-α (PSK-α). The asparagus cells proliferated the most in a medium with an ammonium-nitrate ratio of 0:30 mM and could be maintained without significant loss of responsiveness to PSK-α for at least 96 h from the beginning of culture. In this medium, single cells gave rise to microcalli at initial densities as low as 3.2×102 cells/ml as long as PSK-α was present in the medium. Increasing the ammonium-nitrate ratio resulted in severe inhibition of cell proliferation at a low cell density, even if PSK was added to the medium. We analyzed the subcellular localization of sialidases in human lymphocytes from a patient with adult type sialidosis with partial β-galactosidase deficiency and normal controls. Sialidase activities were measured with α,2 → 3 NeuAc-lactitol, 4-methylumbelliferyl-NeuAc and GM3 ganglioside as substrates. Sialidases in the lysosomes were sonication-labile and hydrolyzed mainly hydrophilic substrates such as NeuAc-lactitol and 4-methylumbelliferyl-NeuAc, but hydrolyzed subsidiarily GM3 ganglioside. On the other hand, sialidases in the plasma membrane were sonication-stable and hydrolyzed both hydrophilic substrates and GM3 ganglioside. In sialidosis with partial β-galactosidase deficiency, the sialidases of the lysosomes showed 3–5% activity toward hydrophilic substrates and 25% activity toward GM3 ganglioside as compared with sialidase activities of the controls. However, there are no differences in the activities of the sialidases in the plasma membrane. These results demonstrate that the essential defect in this disease is the deficiency of a lysosomal sialidase.  相似文献

The Biosafety Committee of the Japanese Association of Laboratory Animal Facilities of National Universities (JALAN) investigated recent episodes of microbiological contamination in genetically modified mice (GMM), and the countermeasures taken when the contaminated GMM were introduced into animal facilities, by questionnaires addressed to 53 animal facilities belonging to JALAN and serological tests. Although almost all of the contaminated GMM were accepted with conditions such as rederivation after or before reception and housing in designated rooms, contamination with a spectrum of microorganisms was demonstrated in GMM transferred domestically and from abroad. In serological tests, Mycoplasma pulmonis, mouse parvovirus, and mouse encephalomylitis virus were detected in GMM transferred from domestic facilities and from abroad. The present results of the questionnaires and serological tests suggest that GMM are highly and widely contaminated with microorganisms compared with mice from commercial breeders. Thus, we propose a microbiological requirement, including microbiological status--excellent, common, and minimum--as a guide for the transfer and procurement of mice and rats in Japan.  相似文献
