Cyclostome embryology and early evolutionary history of vertebrates   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Modern agnathans include only two groups, the lampreys and thehagfish, that collectively comprise the group Cyclostomata.Although accumulating molecular data support the cyclostomesas a monophyletic group, there remain some unsettled questionsregarding the evolutionary relationships of these animals inthat they differ greatly in anatomical and developmental patternsand in their life histories. In this review, we summarize recentdevelopmental data on the lamprey and discuss some questionsrelated to vertebrate evolutionary development raised by thelimited information available on hagfish embryos. Comparisonof the lamprey and gnathostome developmental patterns suggestssome plesiomorphic traits of vertebrates that would have alreadybeen established in the most recent common ancestor of the vertebrates.Understanding hagfish development will further clarify the,as yet, unrecognized ancestral characters that either the lampreysor hagfishes may have lost. We stress the immediate importanceof hagfish embryology in the determination of the most plausiblescenario for the early history of vertebrate evolution, by addressingquestions about the origins of the neural crest, thyroid, andadenohypophysis as examples.  相似文献

Heat shock protein 105 (Hsp105) is a molecular chaperone, and the isoforms Hsp105α and Hsp105β exhibit distinct functions with different subcellular localizations. Hsp105β localizes in the nucleus and induces the expression of the major heat shock protein Hsp70, whereas cytoplasmic Hsp105α is less effective in inducing Hsp70 expression. Hsp105 shuttles between the cytoplasm and the nucleus; the subcellular localization is governed by the relative activities of the nuclear localization signal (NLS) and nuclear export signal (NES). Here, we show that nuclear accumulation of Hsp105α but not Hsp105β is involved in Adriamycin (ADR) sensitivity. Knockdown of Hsp105α induces cell death at low ADR concentration, at which ADR is less effective in inducing cell death in the presence of Hsp105α. Of note, Hsp105 is localized in the nucleus under these conditions, even though Hsp105β is not expressed, indicating that Hsp105α accumulates in the nucleus in response to ADR treatment. The exogenously expressed Hsp105α but not its NLS mutant localizes in the nucleus of ADR-treated cells. In addition, the expression level of the nuclear export protein chromosomal maintenance 1 (CRM1) was decreased by ADR treatment of cells, and CRM1 knockdown caused nuclear accumulation of Hsp105α both in the presence and absence of ADR. These results indicating that Hsp105α accumulates in the nucleus in a manner dependent on the NLS activity via the suppression of nuclear export. Our findings suggest a role of nuclear Hsp105α in the sensitivity against DNA-damaging agents in tumor cells.  相似文献

The sweet protein brazzein isolated from the fruit of the African plant, Pentadiplandra brazzeana Baillon is 2000-500 times sweeter than sucrose, and consists of 54 amino acid residues with four intramolecular disulfide bonds. Brazzein was prepared by the fluoren-9-yl-methoxycarbonyl solid-phase method, and was identical to natural brazzein by high performance liquid chromatography, mass spectroscopy, peptide mapping, and taste evaluation. The D enantiomer of brazzein was also synthesized, and was shown to be the mirror image of brazzein. The D enantiomer (ent-brazzein) was devoid of any sweetness and was essentially tasteless. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Prey evolve antipredator strategies against multiple enemies in nature. We examined how a prey species adopts different predation avoidance tactics against pursuit or sit‐and‐wait predators. As prey, we used three strains of Tribolium beetles artificially selected for short (short strain) or long (long strain) duration of death feigning, and a stock culture (base population). Death feigning is known to be effective for evading a jumping spider in the case of the long strains, while the present study showed that the long‐strain beetles used freezing against a sit‐and‐wait type predator, Amphibolus venator, in this study. The short‐ strain beetles were more easily oriented toward predators. The time to predation was also shorter in the short strains compared to the long strains. The results showed that, as prey, the short strains displayed the same behavior, escaping, against both types of predators. Traditionally, death feigning has been thought to be the last resort in a series of antipredator avoidance behaviors. However, our results showed that freezing and death feigning were not parts of a series of behaviors, but independent strategies against different predators, at least for long‐strain beetles. We also examined the relationship between a predator''s starvation level and its predatory behavior. In addition, the orientation behavior toward and predation rate on the prey were observed to determine how often the predatory insect attacked the beetles.  相似文献

Extreme weather events are predicted to increase as a result of climate change, yet amphibian responses to extreme disturbance events remain understudied, especially in the Neotropics. Recently, an unprecedented windstorm within a protected Costa Rican rainforest opened large light gaps in sites where we have studied behavioral responses of diurnal strawberry poison frogs (Oophaga pumilio) to ultraviolet radiation for nearly two decades. Previous studies demonstrate that O. pumilio selects and defends perches where ultraviolet radiation (UV‐B) is relatively low, likely because of the lethal and sublethal effects of UV‐B. In this natural experiment, we quantified disturbance to O. pumilio habitat, surveyed for the presence of O. pumilio in both high‐disturbance and low‐disturbance areas of the forest, and assessed UV‐B levels and perch selection behavior in both disturbance levels. Fewer frogs were detected in high‐disturbance habitat than in low‐disturbance habitat. In general, frogs were found vocalizing at perches in both disturbance levels, and in both cases, in significantly lower UV‐B levels relative to ambient adjacent surroundings. However, frogs at perches in high‐disturbance areas were exposed to UV‐B levels nearly 10 times greater than males at perches in low‐disturbance areas. Thus, behavioral avoidance of UV‐B may not reduce the risks associated with elevated exposure under these novel conditions, and similarly, if future climate and human‐driven land‐use change lead to sustained analogous environments.  相似文献

We describe the unique development and branching of lobed thalli in Hydrobryum japonicum. Lobe formation begins with meristem initiation at random sites near the thallus margin fringed by protective tissues. As the protective tissues are successively peeled off particularly in the growing new lobes, the lobes become naked and then become fringed again by new protective tissues that develop from the marginal part of the new meristems. Subsequently the meristems become less active and are differentiated into parenchymatous ground tissue at maturity. The random pattern of meristem formation during the sporadic development gives rise to a nonorderly branching pattern of the thalli. Some other lobes (~10%) are regenerated from injured parts of the thalli. The vegetative shoots arise endogenously near the thallus margin and are enclosed by the nonvascular strand nets. The rudimentary shoot apices remain embedded in the thalli. The thalli, though remarkably different from typical roots of other angiosperms, might be extremely transformed roots.  相似文献

Portions of two mitochondrial genes (12S and 16S ribosomal RNAs) were sequenced to analyze the phylogenetic relationships of the Mabuya group from the Australian region (Corucia, Egernia and Tiliqua). Results indicated the monophyly of these genera and their divergence from Asian and African members of this group. This suggests that the diversity of the Mabuya group in the Australian region has increased through an endemic radiation, not through multiple colonizations from outside. Among the genera from this region, Corucia and Tiliqua were closest to each other. This result contradicts with those of the previous hypotheses on the basis of morphological and immunological data that, respectively, suggested closest affinities between Corucia and Egernia, and Egernia and Tiliqua. We suppose that the morphological characters exclusively joining Corucia and Egernia are actually in plesiomorphic state.  相似文献

The relative free energies of binding of trypsin to two amine inhibitors, benzamidine (BZD) and benzylamine (BZA), were calculated using non-Boltzmann thermodynamic integration (NBTI). Comparison of the simulations with the crystal structures of both complexes, trypsin-BZD and trypsin-BZA, shows that NBTI simulations better sample conformational space relative to thermodynamic integration (TI) simulations. The relative binding free energy calculated using NBTI was much closer to the experimentally determined value than that obtained using TI. The error in the TI simulation was found to be primarily due to incorrect sampling of BZA's conformation in the binding pocket. In contrast, NBTI produces a smooth mutation from BZD to BZA using a surrogate potential, resulting in a much closer agreement between the inhibitors' conformations and the omit electron density maps. This superior agreement between experiment and simulation, of both relative binding free energy differences and conformational sampling, demonstrates NBTI's usefulness for free energy calculations in macromolecular simulations.  相似文献

Ischemic heart disease develops as a consequence of coronary atherosclerotic lesion formation. Coronary collateral vessels and microvascular angiogenesis develop as an adaptive response to myocardial ischemia, which ameliorates the function of the damaged heart. Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing vascular bed, is of paramount importance in the maintenance of vascular integrity both in the repair process of damaged tissue and in the formation of collateral vessels in response to tissue ischemia. Angiogenesis is modulated by a multitude of cytokines/chemokines and growth factors. In this regard, angiogenesis cannot be viewed as a single process. It is likely that different mediators are involved in different phases of angiogenesis. Vascular endothelial cells (ECs) produce nitric oxide (NO), an endothelium-derived labile molecule, which maintains vascular homeostasis and thereby prevents vascular atherosclerotic changes. In patients with ischemic heart disease, the release of endothelium-derived NO is decreased, which plays an important role in the atherosclerotic disease progression. In recent years, endothelium-derived NO has been shown to modulate angiogenesis in vitro and in vivo. In this review, we summarize recent progress in the field of the NO-mediated regulation of postnatal angiogenesis, particularly in response to myocardial ischemia.  相似文献
