Periodic paralysis has been known to be associated with thyrotoxicosis in Japan. The incidence was 8.6% among male and 0.4% among female thyrotoxic patients according to a survey performed in the three major thyroid clinics in Japan in 1957. To determine the changes in the incidence during the intervening 34 years, the same type of survey was carried out again in 1991 at the same three major thyroid clinics previously involved. The incidence of paralysis in 1991 was 4.3% among male and 0.04% among female thyrotoxic patients, indicating more than a 40% decrease in the incidence. The possible cause of the decrease is related to the changes in food consumption, namely, to the fact that less carbohydrate and more potassium were taken in 1991 than in 1957. 相似文献

The changes in the mechanical properties and compositions ofcell walls in outer and inner tissues were investigated alongthe hypocotyls of squash (Cucurbita maxima Duch.) seedlings.The endogenous growth capacity decreased and the minimum stress-relaxationtime (TO) of cell walls in outer tissues increased from theapical to the basal region of hypocotyls. A high correlationwas observed between values of To in outer tissues and endogenousgrowth (r=0.99). The values of TO in inner tissues didnot change from the apical to the basal region of hypocotyls. In outer tissues, the levels of neutral sugars in pectin decreasedconsiderably from the apical to the basal region of hypocotyls.However, relative amounts of hemicellulose showed little differencealong the hypocotyls. Levels and molecular weights of hemicellulosicxyloglucans in outer tissues were about 2-3 times greater thanthose in inner tissues. The amount of xyloglucans in outer tissuesincreased in the middle region of hypocotyls, and xyloglucansin upper and basal regions had similar molecular weights. Bycontrast, in inner tissues, amounts of cell-wall material decreasedtoward the basal region. Amounts and molecular weights of hemicellulosicxyloglucans also decreased along the hypocotyls. These results clearly show that cell-wall metabolism duringaging of intact growing stem tissues differs markedly betweenouter and inner tissues, and the absence of a simple relationship between the molecular weights of xyloglucans and the mechanicalproperties of the cell walls in outer tissues indicates thatthe changes in the mechanical properties of the cell walls inintact growing tissues cannot be explained only by the molecularweights of xyloglucans. Thus, the regulation of the mechanicalproperties of cell walls in intact growing stems may be somewhatdifferent from that in auxin-treated stem sections, in whichauxin promotes the depolymerization of xyloglucan molecules. The influence of cyclophosphamide (Cy) on the establishment and duration of the intestinal resistance against enteric infection with a mouse adenovirus, strain K87, was examined in inbred mice, strain DK1. When Cy (40 mg/kg/day) was administered to mice for 17 days from the time of virus challenge, a clear prolongation of viral growth and a delayed appearance of neutralizing (NT) antibody in the intestinal wall as well as in the serum were observed. When Cy (40 mg/kg/day, for 14 days) was administered after cessation of viral growth (4 to 6 weeks after virus challenge) and part of the mice were rechallenged with the virus, titers of NT antibody and immunoglobulins became significantly lower than those in control mice not treated with Cy, and regrowth of the virus was observed in eight out of twenty-five Cy-treated mice, regardless of the presence or absence of re-challenge. In this experiment, antibody titers in the intestinal contents of eight virus-positive mice were significantly lower than those of the remaining seventeen virus-negative mice. The time when the decrease of intestinal NT antibody was maximum coincided with the time of the maximal frequency of viral regrowth. It was discussed that these facts might present an evidence to support the idea that the intestinal resistance was acquired through local NT antibody belonging to IgA in the intestinal tract. 相似文献

Antibiotic susceptibilities of twelve borrelial isolates from skin of patients with erythema migrans (EM) and ticks (Ixodes persulcatus and I. ovatus) in Japan were examined by in vitro microdilution MIC method and macrodilution MBC method. Nine EM isolates and 3 tick isolates were susceptible to amoxicillin, erythromycin, and minocycline. MICs for Japanese isolates were 0.038–0.30 μg/ml, < 0.012 μg/ml, and < 0.012–0.05 μg/ml, respectively. MBCs were as follows: 0.038–0.88 μg/ml, < 0.012–0.10 μg/ml, and <0.025–0.78 μg/ml, respectively. These antibiotics could be recommended for treatment of patients in early stage of Lyme disease in Japan. 相似文献

Insulin binding sites were characterized and quantified in snail (Helix aspersa) ganglia by incubation of tissue sections with 125I-porcine insulin, autoradiography with [3H]Ultrofilm, image analysis coupled to computer-assisted microdensitometry, and comparison with 125I-standards. Cellular localization was performed in the same sections by emulsion autoradiography. 2. Specific insulin binding sites were demonstrated in discretely localized groups of neurons of the cerebral, pleural, parietal, visceral, and pedal ganglia and in nerves. Scatchard analysis performed with consecutive sections from single animals revealed a single class of high-affinity insulin binding sites (Kd, 0.13 +/- 0.01 nM; Bmax, 157 +/- 10 fmol/mg protein). 3. It has been reported that fatty liver is not uncommon in Cushing's syndrome. Biochemical data obtained from routine blood chemistry in 10 patients with Cushing's syndrome were compared with those for 15 patients with histologically verified fatty liver. We found an absence of a decreased GOT/GPT ratio, low normal choline esterase and increased lactic dehydrogenase activities together with lowered serum protein and albumin, and increased blood sugar and total cholesterol in Cushing's syndrome when compared with those of fatty liver cases. These data and additional findings in liver histology obtained from one patient with Cushing's syndrome due to adrenocortical carcinoma indicated that fatty changes in the liver were not frequently encountered in Cushing's syndrome. These abnormal biochemical data might be a way of distinguishing Cushing's syndrome from fatty liver. 相似文献
