Background
Previous studies have reported an inverse association between height and risk of cardiovascular disease. However, evidence is limited for the association between risk of atherosclerosis and height. Further, although the association between atherosclerosis and body mass index (BMI) is reportedly positive, there have been no reports of studies on associations between height and atherosclerosis in relation to BMI.Methods
We conducted a cross-sectional study of Japanese men aged 30 to 89 years undergoing general health check-ups.Results
Of the 1,337 men, 312 were diagnosed with carotid atherosclerosis (carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) ≥ 1.1 mm), but no significant association was found between height and carotid atherosclerosis for the entire study group. Stratification by BMI status of those analytical findings disclosed a significant inverse association between height and carotid atherosclerosis among overweight (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) but not among non-overweight (BMI < 25 kg/m2) men. The classical cardiovascular risk factors-adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of carotid atherosclerosis for an increment of one SD (standard deviation) in height (6.70 cm) were 0.71 (0.54 to 0.94) for overweight (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) and 1.05 (0.87 to 1.27) for non-overweight (BMI < 25 kg/m2) men.Conclusion
Independent from classical cardiovascular risk factors, height was found to be inversely associated with carotid atherosclerosis for overweight but not for non-overweight men. 相似文献32.

Background
Many studies have focused on the decreasing age of onset of eating disorders (EDs). Because school-age children with EDs are likely to suffer worse physical effects than adults, early detection and appropriate support are important. The cooperation of Yogo teachers is essential in helping these students to find appropriate care. To assist Yogo teachers, it is helpful to clarify the encounter rates (the proportion of Yogo teachers who have encountered ED students) and kinds of requested support (which Yogo teachers felt necessary to support ED students). There are no studies that have surveyed the prevalence rates of ED children by ED type as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5), nor were we able to find any quantitative study surveying the kinds of support Yogo teachers feel helpful to support ED students.Methods
A questionnaire survey was administered to 655 Yogo teachers working at elementary/junior high/senior high/special needs schools in Chiba Prefecture. The questionnaire asked if the respondents had encountered students with each of the ED types described in DSM-5 (anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED), avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and other types of EDs (Others)), and the kinds of support they felt necessary to support these students. The encounter rates and the kinds of requested were obtained and compared, taking their confidence intervals into consideration.Results
The encounter rates for AN, BN, BED, ARFID, and Others were 48.4, 14.0, 8.4, 10.7, and 4.6 %, respectively. When classified by school type, AN, BN, BED, and ARFID had their highest encounter rates in senior high schools. Special needs schools had the highest rate for Others. The support most required for all ED types was “a list of medical/consultation institutions.”Conclusions
Our results have clarified how to support Yogo teachers in the early detection and support of ED students. We found that the encounter rate of AN was the highest, and that it is effective to offer “a list of medical/consultation institutions” to junior and senior high schools where the encounter rates for AN are high.33.

We investigated seasonal changes in the density of epiphytic cladocerans Alona spp. (Chydoridae, Anomopoda) in two habitats, emergent and submerged aquatic plants, in Lake Suwa, Japan, from April to August 1998 and from April to November 2000. Alona had a density peak in early June on reeds (emergent) and in late June on Potamogeton malaianus (submerged). In summer, Alona density remained low in both habitats. Although density was positively correlated with the abundance of epiphytic algae, the birth rate was constant and no correlation between algal abundance and clutch size was detected. In a field experiment using ropes as an artificial substrate covered with high and low densities of epiphytic algae as food, more Alona attached to the ropes with the high density of algae. These results suggest that Alona may select food-rich habitats and migrate seasonally, and that migration is an important factor in the population dynamics of epiphytic chydorid cladocerans such as Alona. Microsatellite analysis was used to investigate the patch establishment and development of Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb. et Zucc, a clonal herbaceous plant that dominates the primary succession on the southeast slope of Mount Fuji. Genotypes of P. cuspidatum in 155 patches at the study site differed from each other. This indicates that P. cuspidatum patches are initially established by seed dispersed on the bare scoria field, and not by clonal rhizome extension. Genetic differentiation was estimated using the FST values between subpopulations at the study site. There was almost no genetic differentiation between subpopulations, indicating the presence of massive gene flow. The pollen fathers of seeds and maternal genets of current-year seedlings were inferred from the microsatellite allele composition by a simple exclusion method. The wide, random distribution of pollen fathers suggests that pollen dispersal occurs over a broad area. Maternal analysis showed a tendency for seed dispersal to be biased to the area nearby and down slope from the mother plants. Patch establishment under massive gene flow may result from such pollen and seed dispersal. To understand the process of patch development, aerial photographs taken from 1962 to 1999 were compared, and then genets in each of 36 patches were identified from the microsatellite genotypes of P. cuspidatum shoots. The comparison of aerial photographs showed that most of the patches enlarged each year and that some neighbouring patches combined during growth. Genet analysis demonstrated a high correlation between patch area and the area of the largest genet within it, and that new genets were recruited at the patch periphery. These findings indicate that both vegetative and sexual reproduction, i.e. rhizome extension and the establishment of new seedlings, contribute to the development of P. cuspidatum patches. 相似文献

The early stage of volcanic desert succession is underway on the southeastern slope of Mount Fuji. We used markers of nuclear microsatellites (simple sequence repeats; SSR) and chloroplast microsatellites (cpSSR) to investigate the population genetic structure and reproduction dynamics of Salix reinii, one of the dominant pioneer shrubs in this area. The number of S. reinii genets in a patch and the area of the largest genet within the patch increased with patch area, suggesting that both clonal growth and seedling recruitment are involved in the reproduction dynamics of S. reinii. Five polymorphic cpSSR markers were developed for S. reinii by sequencing the noncoding regions between universal sequences in the chloroplast genome. Nineteen different cpSSR haplotypes were identified, indicating that S. reinii pioneer genets were created by the long-distance dispersal of seeds originating from different mother genets around the study site, where all vegetation was destroyed during the last eruption. Furthermore, the clustered distributions of different haplotypes within each patch or plot suggested that newly colonized genets tended to be generated from seeds dispersed near the initially established mother genets. These results revealed that the establishment of the S. reinii population on the southeastern slope of Mount Fuji involved two sequential modes of seed dispersal: long-distance dispersal followed by short-distance dispersal. 相似文献

Ghrelin is an acylated peptide that stimulates food intake and the secretion of growth hormone. While ghrelin is predominantly synthesized in a subset of endocrine cells in the oxyntic gland of the human and rat stomach, the mechanism regulating ghrelin secretion remains unknown. Somatostatin, a peptide produced in the gastric oxyntic mucosa, is known to suppress secretion of several gastrointestinal peptides in a paracrine fashion. By double immunohistochemistry, we demonstrated that somatostatin-immunoreactive cells contact ghrelin-immunoreactive cells. A single intravenous injection of somatostatin reduced the systemic plasma concentration of ghrelin in rats. Continuous infusion of somatostatin into the gastric artery of the vascularly perfused rat stomach suppressed ghrelin secretion in both dose- and time-dependent manner. These findings indicate that ghrelin secretion from the stomach is regulated by gastric somatostatin. 相似文献

15-Deoxy-Delta12,14-prostaglandin J2 (15d-Delta12,14-PGJ2) is an endogenous ligand for a nuclear peroxysome proliferator activated receptor-gamma (PPAR). We found novel binding sites of 15d-Delta12,14-PGJ2 in the neuronal plasma membranes of the cerebral cortex. The binding sites of [3H]15d-Delta12,14-PGJ2 were displaced by 15d-Delta12,14-PGJ2 with a half-maximal concentration of 1.6 microM. PGD2 and its metabolites also inhibited the binding of [3H]15d-Delta12,14-PGJ2. Affinities for the novel binding sites were 15d-Delta12,14-PGJ2 > Delta12-PGJ2 > PGJ2 > PGD2. Other eicosanoids and PPAR agonists did not alter the binding of [3H]15d-Delta12,14-PGJ2. In primary cultures of rat cortical neurons, we examined the pathophysiologic roles of the novel binding sites. 15d-Delta12,14-PGJ2 triggered neuronal cell death in a concentration-dependent manner, with a half-maximal concentration of 1.1 microM. The neurotoxic potency of PGD2 and its metabolites was also 15d-Delta12,14-PGJ2 > Delta12-PGJ2 > PGJ2 > PGD2. The morphologic and ultrastructural characteristics of 15d-Delta12,14-PGJ2-induced neuronal cell death were apoptotic, as evidenced by condensed chromatin and fragmented DNA. On the other hand, we detected little neurotoxicity of other eicosanoids and PPAR agonists. In conclusion, we demonstrated that novel binding sites of 15d-Delta12,14-PGJ2 exist in the plasma membrane. The present study suggests that the novel binding sites might be involved in 15d-Delta12,14-PGJ2-induced neuronal apoptosis. 相似文献

The microtubule-associated protein tau is a highly soluble protein that shows hardly any tendency to assemble under physiological conditions. In the brains of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, however, tau dissociates from the axonal microtubule and abnormally aggregates to form paired helical filaments (PHFs). One of the priorities in Alzheimer research is to clarify the mechanism of PHF formation. In recent years, several factors regulating tau assembly have come to light, yet some important questions remain to be answered. In this work, the His-tagged gene constructs of the four-repeat microtubule binding domain (4RMBD) in tau protein and its three mutants, 4RMBD S305N, N279K, and P301L, were expressed in E. coli and purified. Gel filtration chromatography and dynamic light scattering measurement yielded a Stokes radius of 3.1 nm, indicating that the His-tagged 4RMBD normally exists in buffer solution in a dimer state, which is formed by non-covalent intermolecular interactions. This non-covalent dimer can further polymerize to form filaments in the presence of polyanions such as heparin. The kinetics of the in vitro aggregation was monitored by thioflavine S dye fluorescence and CD measurements. The aggregation of 4RMBD was suggested to be a nucleation-dependent process, where the non-covalent dimer acts as an effective structural unit. The aggregation rate was strongly affected by the point mutation. Among the 4RMBD mutants, the rate of S305N was exceptionally fast, whereas N279K was the slowest, even slower than the wild-type. The aggregations were optimal in a weakly reducing environment for all the mutants and the wild type. However, the aggregations were affected differently by buffer pH, depending on the 4RMBD mutation. 相似文献
