The high-yielding indica rice variety, ‘Takanari’, has the high rate of leaf photosynthesis compared with the commercial japonica varieties. Among backcrossed inbred lines from a cross between ‘Takanari’ and a japonica variety, ‘Koshihikari’, two lines, BTK-a and BTK-b, showed approximately 20% higher photosynthetic rate than that of ‘Takanari’ for a flag leaf at full heading. This is a highest recorded rate of rice leaf photosynthesis. Here, the timing and cause of the increased leaf photosynthesis in the BTK lines were investigated by examining the photosynthesis and related parameters, as well as mesophyll cell anatomy during ontogenesis. Their photosynthetic rate was greater than that of ‘Takanari’ in the 13th leaf, as well as the flag leaf, but there were no differences in the 7th and 10th leaves. There were no consistent differences in the stomatal conductance, or the leaf nitrogen and Rubisco contents in the 13th and flag leaves. The total surface area of mesophyll cells per leaf area (TAmes) in the 13th and flag leaves increased significantly in the BTK lines due to the increased number and developed lobes of mesophyll cells compared with in ‘Takanari’. The mesophyll conductance (g m) became greater in the BTK lines compared with ‘Takanari’ in the flag leaves but not in the 10th leaves. A close correlation was observed between TAmes and g m. We concluded that the increased mesophyll conductance through the development of mesophyll cells during the reproductive period is a probable cause of the greater photosynthetic rate in the BTK lines.  相似文献

In most cases, rice production is associated with flooding irrigation and the efficiency of irrigated water use (WUEi) is generally lower for production of rice than for other crops. We have examined the effects of various irrigation regimes on water consumption in a well-puddled paddy field, as well as on dry matter production, grain yield and physiological responses of the plants. Four sets of conditions were studied, with two replications, in the well-puddled paddy field: Continuous flooding irrigation treatment (CSF); three intermittent irrigation treatments, designated II-0, II-1 and II-2, in which plants were re-irrigated when the water potential of the soil fell below 0, –10, and –20 kPa at a depth of 5 cm, respectively. Water consumption was lower during II-0 than during CSF because the percolation rate was reduced by the reduction in the hydraulic head of the ponded water. Intermittent irrigation led to the repeated shrinking and swelling of soil during II-1 and II-2 and, therefore, soil cracks developed rapidly. Since they became the major routes of water percolation, these soil cracks increased water consumption during II-1 and II-2 above that during CSF and II-0. There were no significant differences in dry matter production and grain yield between CSF and II-0, but both were significantly greater than in the case of II-1 and II-2. Therefore, WUEi increased in the following order: II-0, CSF, II-2, II-1, although the difference was very small between II-1 and II-2. A lower crop growth rate (CGR) resulted from a decrease in the net assimilation rate (NAR) during II-1 and II-2, and there was also a reduction in the leaf area index (LAI) during II-2. Early senescence with ripening and water stress around midday decreased the rate of photosynthesis in leaves, causing the lower NAR. These physiological responses of the plants were responsible for the reduction on the dry matter production and grain yield in the intermittent irrigation. In an attempt to relate structure to anticoccidial activity, a number of 5-modified analogs of 4-deoxypyridoxol (4-DOP) and α4-norpyridoxol have been synthesized and their biological activities examined. The compounds prepared include the 5-(3-hydroxypropyl), 5-(2-hydroxyethyl), 5-(1-hydroxyethyl), formyl and acetyl analogs of 4-DOP, and 5-(3-hydroxypropyl), formyl, ethoxycarbonyl, carbamoyl and hydroxyl analogs of α4-norpyridoxol. Among these compounds, 4-deoxyisopyridoxal and α4-norisopyridoxal were found to exhibit anticoccidal activity.  相似文献

We investigated the natural variations in the flag leaf morphology of rice. We conducted a principal component analysis based on nine flag leaf morphology traits using 103 accessions from the National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences Core Collection. The first component explained 39% of total variance, and the variable with highest loading was the width of the flag leaf (WFL). A genome-wide association analysis of 102 diverse Japanese accessions revealed that marker RM6992 on chromosome 4 was highly associated with WFL. In analyses of progenies derived from a cross between Takanari and Akenohoshi, the most significant quantitative trait locus (QTL) for WFL was in a 10.3-kb region containing the NARROW LEAF 1 (NAL1) gene, located 0.4 Mb downstream of RM6992. Analyses of chromosomal segment substitution lines indicated that a mutation (G1509A single-nucleotide mutation, causing an R233H amino acid substitution in NAL1) was present at the QTL. This explained 13 and 20% of total variability in WFL and the distance between small vascular bundles, respectively. The mutation apparently occurred during rice domestication and spread into japonica, tropical japonica, and indica subgroups. Notably, one accession, Phulba, had a NAL1 allele encoding only the N-terminal, or one-fourth, of the wild-type peptide. Given that the Phulba allele and the histidine-type allele showed essentially the same phenotype, the histidine-type allele was regarded as malfunctional. The phenotypes of transgenic plants varied depending on the ratio of histidine-type alleles to arginine-type alleles, raising the possibility that H233-type products function differently from and compete with R233-type products.  相似文献

The rice CM2088 mutant is the wilty phenotype and wilts markedly under well-watered sunny conditions. The leaf water potential and epidermal (mainly stomatal) conductance of CM2088 plants decreased significantly under conditions that induced intense transpiration, as compared with those of wild-type plants, revealing that the wilty phenotype was not the result of abnormal stomatal behavior but was due to an increase in resistance to water transport. The resistance to water transport was dramatically elevated in the node and the sheath and blade of a leaf of the mutant, but not in the root or stem. The diameter of xylem vessels in the large vascular bundles of the leaf sheath and the internode tended to be small, and the numbers of vessel elements with narrowed or scalariform perforation plates in the leaf blade and sheath were greater in the mutant than in the wild type. Most xylem vessels were occluded, with air bubbles in the leaf sheath of the mutant during the midday hours under intense transpiration conditions, while no bubbles were observed in plants that were barely transpiring, revealing that the significant increase in resistance to water transport was a result of the cavitation. The additive effects of cavitation in xylem vessels and the decreased diameter and deformed plates of vessel elements might be responsible for the wilty phenotype of CM2088.  相似文献

为了探讨控制水稻(Oryza sativa L.)颖果发育的因素,选择了颖果干重有显著差异的Ootikara(大粒,36mg/粒)和Habataki(小粒,18 mg/粒)两个水稻品种,比较颖果重量、胚乳细胞数、果皮和胚乳的结构以及某些生理活性等变化.结果指出:与Habataki相比,Ootikara子房壁细胞和颖果的持续生长期长,最终颖果的胚乳细胞数目和每个细胞的平均干重大;Ootikara颖果的脱氢酶和H2O2酶活性、穗的呼吸速率、剑叶的绿色程度和光合速率等维持高水平的时间长;Ootikara子房背部维管束失去功能的时间也较迟.结果表明,大粒品种的库容大和生理活性期长是其颖果能显著增大的生理原因.  相似文献

Planarians are well known for their remarkable regenerative capacity. This capacity to regenerate is thought to be due to the presence of totipotent somatic stem cells known as ‘neoblasts’, which have particular morphological characteristics. The totipotency of neoblasts was supported by Baguñà's experiment, which involved the introduction of donor cells into irradiated hosts. However, since Baguñà's experiment did not include the use of a phenotypic marker, the donor cells could not be traced. In the current study, a genetic mutant planarian, menashi, an eye‐defective mutant that lacks the pigmented area in the eyes, was established. This planarian is excellent for tracing the fate of cells after their introduction into irradiated hosts. To investigate the differentiation potency more directly, a neoblast‐rich fraction obtained from normal worms was transplanted into an X‐ray‐irradiated menashi strain. Planarians that survive X‐ray irradiation were developed, and we observed the pigment of the area in the eyes of the regenerating planarians. This result suggests that the neoblast‐rich fraction contains cells that can proliferate and differentiate. These cells can replace the cells and structures lost by X‐ray irradiation and ablation, and they can also differentiate into eye pigment cells.  相似文献

Annexin (Anx) A3 increases and plays important roles in the signalling cascade in hepatocyte growth in cultured hepatocytes. However, no information is available on its expression and role in rat liver regeneration. In the present study, AnxA3 expression was investigated to determine whether it also plays a role in the signalling cascade in rat liver regeneration. AnxA3 protein and mRNA level both increase in liver after administration of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) or 70% partial hepatectomy. AnxA3 protein level increases in isolated parenchymal hepatocytes, but not in non-parenchymal liver cells, in these rat liver regeneration models. AnxA3 mRNA increases in hepatocytes after CCl4 administration. Anti-hepatocyte growth factor antibody suppresses this increase in AnxA3 mRNA level. These results demonstrate that AnxA3 expression increases in hepatocytes through a hepatocyte growth factor-mediated pathway in rat liver regeneration models, suggesting that AnxA3 plays an important role in the signalling cascade in rat liver regeneration.  相似文献

The garlic-derived antibacterial principle, alk(en)yl sulfinate compounds, has long been considered as very short-lived substance. However, there are some data showing a rather more stable nature of allicin. We determined here the thermostability of allicin by a systematic analyses employing chemical quantification and an antibacterial activity assay. Allicin in an aqueous extract of garlic was degraded stoichiometrically in proportion to the temperature; we estimated the half-life of allicin to be about a year at 4 degrees C (from 1.8 mg/ml to 0.9 mg/ml) and 32 d at 15 degrees C, but only 1 d at 37 degrees C (from 2.0 mg/ml to 1.0 mg/ml). The half-life values for antibacterial activity showed a similar trend in results: 63 d or more at 4 degrees C for both antibacterial activities, 14 d for anti-staphylococcal activity, and 26 d for anti-escherichia activity at 15 degrees C, but only 1.2 d and 1.9 d for the respective activities at 37 degrees C. Such antibacterial activities were attributable to the major allicin, allyl 2-propenylthiosulfinate. Surprisingly, the decline in the quantity of allicin was not accompanied by its degradation; instead, allicin became a larger molecule, ajoene, which was 3-times larger than allicin.  相似文献
