The flow of power law fluids, which include shear thinning and shear thickening as well as Newtonian as a special case, in networks of interconnected elastic tubes is investigated using a residual-based pore scale network modeling method with the employment of newly derived formulae. Two relations describing the mechanical interaction between the local pressure and local cross-sectional area in distensible tubes of elastic nature are considered in the derivation of these formulae. The model can be used to describe shear dependent flows of mainly viscous nature. The behavior of the proposed model is vindicated by several tests in a number of special and limiting cases where the results can be verified quantitatively or qualitatively. The model, which is the first of its kind, incorporates more than one major nonlinearity corresponding to the fluid rheology and conduit mechanical properties, that is non-Newtonian effects and tube distensibility. The formulation, implementation, and performance indicate that the model enjoys certain advantages over the existing models such as being exact within the restricting assumptions on which the model is based, easy implementation, low computational costs, reliability, and smooth convergence. The proposed model can, therefore, be used as an alternative to the existing Newtonian distensible models; moreover, it stretches the capabilities of the existing modeling approaches to reach non-Newtonian rheologies.  相似文献

Background

The African Program for Onchocerciais Control (APOC) with a main strategy of community directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI) was established with the aim of eliminating Onchocerciasis as a disease of public health and socio-economic importance. The study area was a hyper endemic area just before the implementation of CDTI. It has been implemented for six years in this district but yet not been evaluated. So, the objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of six years CDTI on parasitological and clinical indices of Onchocerciasis

Methods

This study employed a pre-post impact evaluation design. The minimum sample size for this study was 1318; the respondents were selected by multi-stage sampling technique. Data on socio-demographic characteristics using a semi-structured questionnaire, clinical examination for skin signs and symptoms of Onchocerciasis and two bloodless skin snips from each side of the gluteal fold were taken from the entire study participants. SPSS version 16.0 and Medcalc version 12.2.1.0 were used for analysis.

Result

The microfilaridermia reduced from the pre-intervention value of 74.8% to 40.7%, indicating a 45.6% reduction, mean intensity from 32.1(SD = 61.5) mf/mg skin snip to 18.7(SD = 28.7)indicating 41.75% reduction, CMFL from 19.6 mf/mg skin snip to 4.7 indicating 76% reduction. The result also showed that microfilaridermia and mean intensity decreased as the number of treatment taken increased. Pruritis, leopard skin, onchocercomata and hanging groin reduced by 54.4%, 61.3%, 77.7% and 88.5% respectively.

Conclusions

The implementation of CDTI significantly reduced the parasitological and clinical indices of Onchocerciasis, so, efforts should be made to improve the annual treatment coverage and sustainability of CDTI to drastically reduce the micro filarial load to the level the disease would no longer be a public health problem.  相似文献

1. Biochemical levels of certain carbohydrates, lipids and proteins were determined in plasma, liver and brain of the oriental hedgehog and compared in active, hypothermic and awake animals. 2. Lipid reserves exhibited significant increase in autumn before the onset of hibernation. This was bound up with the predisposition of the animal to hibernate. 3. During hypothermia, glucose levels, lipid reserves and tissue protein content significantly declined, in contrast to tissue glycogen which remarkably increased. 4. This indicated that glycogenolysis was impaired while gluconeogenesis from lipids and proteins presented the primary source of energy necessary for tissue requirements. 5. During arousal, the marked elevation in plasma glucose concomitant with the drop in tissue glycogen, lipids and proteins indicated that glycogenolysis as well as gluconeogenesis participated in glucose production necessary for the thermogenesis required during wakefulness. 6. Our data suggested that the accumulation of brain glycogen during winter may directly initiate arousal. 7. The nature of the biochemical changes that occurred throughout the hibernation cycle implies that metabolism in hedgehogs is influenced by dynamically balanced control mechanisms operating within a wide range of temperatures.  相似文献

The quantitative estimation of total dopamine (DA), noradrenaline (NE), serotonin (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) content in the whole brain tissue of normal Nile grass rat, Arvicanthis niloticus, gives and average of 631 +/- 12 ng DA/g, 366 +/- 12 ng NE/g, 617 +/- 15 ng 5-HT/g and 431 +/- 10 ng 5-HIAA/g fresh brain tissue. The effect of barbitone sodium and thiopental sodium on the total DA, NE, 5-HT and 5-HIAA content in the brain tissue of the Nile grass rat, Arvicanthis niloticus, was studied. The total DA, NE, 5-HT and 5-HIAA contents were determined 5 hr after i.p. injection of different doses of barbitone sodium (20, 40 and 80 mg/ml/100 g body wt) and thiopental sodium (5, 10 and 20 mg/ml/100 g body wt). The effect of different time intervals (1, 10, 30 min, 1, 2.5, 5, 8, 16, 24 and 48 hr) on the total brain DA, NE, 5-HT and 5-HIAA content was investigated after i.p. injection of 40 mg of barbitone sodium and 10 mg of thiopental sodium/ml/100 g body wt. Both barbitone sodium and thiopental sodium caused an increase in DA, NE and 5-HT content and a decrease in 5-HIAA content in the brain tissue of Arvicanthis niloticus. The increase in the whole brain contents of DA, NE and 5-HT after the administration of barbitone sodium and thiopental sodium may be due either to inhibition of transmitter release by an action at the monoamine nerve terminal or to effects causing a decrease in nerve impulse flow. On the other hand, the decrease in 5-HIAA may be due to the decrease in the turnover of 5-HT.  相似文献

Recent reports suggest that hypovitaminosis D in athletes is as common as in the general population. This study was devised to examine vitamin D status and determinants of deficiency in athletes living in a sunny country (Tunisia). One hundred and fifty national elite athletes, training outdoors (n = 83) or indoors (n = 67), were enrolled from January to February 2012. Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D was measured by radioimmunoassay. Concentrations were between 50 and 75 nmol · l-1 in 21.3% of participants, between 25 and 50 nmol · l-1 in 55.3% of participants and <25 nmol · l-1 in 14.7% of participants. The concentrations were significantly lower in indoor athletes than outdoor athletes (36.2±19.0 nmol · l-1 vs. 49.1±19.2 nmol · l-1; p < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, vitamin D deficiency (25-hydroxyvitamin D <50 nmol · l-1) was associated with indoor sports [multi-adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval), 5.03 (1.64-15.4); p = 0.005], female gender [3.72 (1.44-9.65); p = 0.007] and age < 18 years [2.40 (1.01-5.85); p = 0.05]. Athletes living in sun-rich environments are exposed to a high risk of vitamin D inadequacy. Given the importance of vitamin D in health and athletic ability, targeting sufficient levels of plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D in athletes is well justified.  相似文献

The interactions of Meloidogyne javanica, Rotylenchulus reniformis, and Rhizobium sp. on cowpea seedlings were investigated. Upon simultaneous inoculation with the two nematode species, M. javanica invaded first but did not affect root invasion by R. reniformis. M. javanica populations increased less in competition with R. reniformis than when present alone. Preinvasion by R. renilormis significantly suppressed the number of M. javanica in the roots. Inoculation of M. javanica and/or R. reniformis with rhizobia did not affect nodulation. Nodule formation was hindered only when R. reniformis infection preceded rhizobial inoculation. Nitrogen nodules were formed on M. javanica galls. Nodules and M. javanica galls served as infection sites for both nematodes. Although R. reniIormis on the roots reduced the space for M. javanica infection, M. javanica is more competitive than R. reniformis and ultimately predominates as a result of its higher reproductive potential and shorter time spent in the soil before infection.  相似文献

Homeostasis of proteins involved in contractility of individual cardiomyocytes and those coupling adjacent cells is of critical importance as any abnormalities in cardiac electrical conduction may result in cardiac irregular activity and heart failure. Bcl2-associated athanogene 3 (BAG3) is a stress-induced protein whose role in stabilizing myofibril proteins as well as protein quality control pathways, especially in the cardiac tissue, has captured much attention. Mutations of BAG3 have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiac complications such as dilated cardiomyopathy. In this study, we have used an in vitro model of neonatal rat ventricular cardiomyocytes to investigate potential impacts of BAG3 on electrophysiological activity by employing the microelectrode array (MEA) technology. Our MEA data showed that BAG3 plays an important role in the cardiac signal generation as reduced levels of BAG3 led to lower signal frequency and amplitude. Our analysis also revealed that BAG3 is essential to the signal propagation throughout the myocardium, as the MEA data-based conduction velocity, connectivity degree, activation time, and synchrony were adversely affected by BAG3 knockdown. Moreover, BAG3 deficiency was demonstrated to be connected with the emergence of independently beating clusters of cardiomyocytes. On the other hand, BAG3 overexpression improved the activity of cardiomyocytes in terms of electrical signal amplitude and connectivity degree. Overall, by providing more in-depth analyses and characterization of electrophysiological parameters, this study reveals that BAG3 is of critical importance for electrical activity of neonatal cardiomyocytes.  相似文献

The overall prevalence rate of endemic goitre among the Fur and Baggara tribes of Western Sudan was found to be 74%. Family studies in 60 nuclear families showed a significantly higher incidence of endemic goitre among the offspring of affected parents than among the offspring of normal parents. This suggests a possible genetic predisposition to endemic goitre. The proportion of phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) non-tasters was found to be 13% among the goitrous subjects compared to 17.5% among the non-goitrous subjects. However, the association with PTC as well as with 6 blood-genetic markers, was not statistically significant.  相似文献
