Circumnutation in Helianthus annuus L. was investigated by measurements lasting 4–7 weeks using a picture analysis system. The rhythmicity of circumnutation vigour (intensity) with regard to the trajectory length and period of individual circumnutations were examined. Three photoperiod conditions were applied [light/dark (LD), continuous light (LL) and LD followed by LL]. Data were processed by the Fourier analysis. Statistical analysis included the examination of circumnutation mean frequencies and correlation tests. Both parameters, trajectory length and period, revealed a daily (24 h) modulation in LD with a weak correlation between them, whereas in LL no daily modulation of the parameters was observed. After LD–LL transition, the parameters were gradually losing their daily modulation. Despite a very strong modulation of the trajectory length in LD, the period was quite stable in all groups tested, but only in LD were there no statistical differences in the number of circumnutations per 24 h among the plants studied. LD was concluded to be the strong synchronizer, making the plants circumnutate regularly. Regardless of the presence or absence of daily modulation, the infradian (several and more days long) harmonics of the trajectory length were the same in each group. These findings strongly support the view that circumnutation in sunflower, widely known as an ultradian rhythm, also possesses daily and infradian modulations of its intensity. We identified 14 emerging and poorly understood threats and opportunities for addressing the global conservation of freshwater mussels over the next decade. A panel of 17 researchers and stakeholders from six continents submitted a total of 56 topics that were ranked and prioritized using a consensus-building Delphi technique. Our 14 priority topics fell into five broad themes (autecology, population dynamics, global stressors, global diversity, and ecosystem services) and included understanding diets throughout mussel life history; identifying the drivers of population declines; defining metrics for quantifying mussel health; assessing the role of predators, parasites, and disease; informed guidance on the risks and opportunities for captive breeding and translocations; the loss of mussel–fish co-evolutionary relationships; assessing the effects of increasing surface water changes; understanding the effects of sand and aggregate mining; understanding the effects of drug pollution and other emerging contaminants such as nanomaterials; appreciating the threats and opportunities arising from river restoration; conserving understudied hotspots by building local capacity through the principles of decolonization; identifying appropriate taxonomic units for conservation; improved quantification of the ecosystem services provided by mussels; and understanding how many mussels are enough to provide these services. Solutions for addressing the topics ranged from ecological studies to technological advances and socio-political engagement. Prioritization of our topics can help to drive a proactive approach to the conservation of this declining group which provides a multitude of important ecosystem services. 相似文献

I criticize Herbert Simon's argument for the claim that complex natural systems must constitute decomposable, mereological or functional hierarchies. The argument depends on certain assumptions about the requirements for the successful evolution of complex systems, most importantly, the existence of stable, intermediate stages in evolution. Simon offers an abstract model of any process that succeeds in meeting these requirements. This model necessarily involves construction through a decomposable hierarchy, and thus suggests that any complex, natural, i.e., evolved, system is constituted by a decomposable hierarchy. I argue that Stuart Kauffman's recent models of genetic regulatory networks succeed in specifying processes that could meet Simon's requirements for evolvability without requiring construction through a decomposable hierarchy. Since Kauffman's models are at least as plausible as Simon's model, Simon's argument that complex natural systems must constitute decomposable, mereological or functional hierarchies does not succeed. 相似文献

Summary About 25% of total pyruvate kinase activity in muscle appears in a bound form which is insoluble in water or diluted salt solutions at pH 5.8. That activity is associated with the ribonuc-leoprotein complexes and is soluble at high ionic strength. A procedure is described for the purification and crystallization of this enzyme form herein called pyruvate kinase MB and water soluble form MA.Crystalline nucleoproteins are composed of active and inactive RNA-protein complexes with varying RNA content. By fractional crystallization and gel filtration a number of crystalline complexes were separated, two of them highly purified. One preparation was homogenous, contained 0.5% RNA and had a specific activity of 265 U/mg protein, the other one 10% RNA and 200 U/mg protein respectively.Forms MA and MB share the same protein as shown in immunodiffusion test with the anti-MA sera. They differ in solubility and stability in diluted solutions. In Tris-HCl buffer, pH 7.6 form MB is rapidly inactivated whereas form MA is quite stable under the same conditions. Both forms have different Km for phosphoenolpyruvate and ADP and Vmax as well.Digestion of pyruvate kinase MB with RNase was without marked effect on specific activity of the enzyme.The presence of numerous ribonucleoprotein complexes with a polynucleotide content in the range of 0.5 to 20% and specific activity of 160–220 U/mg protein suggests the control by RNA binding of pyruvate kinase activity from human skeletal muscle.This work was supported by a grant from the Biochemical and Biophysical Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. 相似文献
