WITH the exception of muscarone, the potencies of the optical enantiomers of stimulants of the cholinergic post-ganglionic parasympathetic (muscarinic) nervous junction differ greatly, typically by about 200:1 (refs. 1 and 2). Furthermore, the absolute configuration of all the more potent enantiomers is the same3, that of L(+)-muscarine. The ratio of activities for muscarone, however, is only about 3:1 (refs. 1 and 2) and the more potent enantiomer is the D(?). Various rationalizations of this exception have been proposed in the absence of any conformational information. We have determined the conformation of muscarone in crystals of the iodide and suggest an alternative explanation of the activities of the enantiomers which fits the proposed structure-activity relationships of muscarinic3, 4 and nicotinic5 agonists of cholinergic nervous systems.  相似文献

Starch, free sugars and protein contents, and the specific activitiesof enzymes of starch metabolism were determined in tobacco calluscultured under shoot-forming and non-shoot-forming conditions.Shoot-forming cultures contained higher levels of starch, freesugars and protein. Shoot-forming cultures had higher specificactivities for starch-synthesising enzymes throughout culture.On the other hand, higher levels of activity for starch-degradingenzymes in shoot-forming tissues were only observed during organizeddevelopment. In Australia, populations of mice occasionally irrupt into plagues, mainly in the southern and eastern grain-growing regions. Mus domesticus was the only member of the subgenus Mus identified from a genetic survey of animals collected from four states. Little is known of the origin of these mice but they probably came from Europe where plagues do not occur. We examined whether mice have evolved the ability to plague since their colonization by comparing some population parameters of Australian, European and North American mice. Their helminth fauna were contrasted to gauge the importance of founder effects on the evolution of mice in Australia.
Australian mice share 52% (12 of 23) of the helminths found in mice in Europe and North America. Those not shared mainly had indirect life cycles. The absence of species could be explained by a strong founder effect or the lack of suitable intermediate hosts near Australian ports. There was no evidence that population structure or diet had evolved differently. Population abundance was different in field populations especially during the build-up and irruption of plagues. These differences were related to better breeding by mice in Australia in field environments; average number of embryos per litter was substantially higher and breeding seasons longer. Genetic change is not the only explanation for this increased productivity–a combination of lack of interspecific competition from other granivores and more favourable climatic conditions may be responsible.
All things considered, there was no compelling evidence that Australian mice have evolved the ability to plague. Their ability to respond to good conditions by increasing litter size beyond that recorded elsewhere supports the notion that control of mouse productivity is an appropriate management option for plague prevention.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 The interaction between coleopteran predators and baculovirus-infected larvae was studied in the laboratory and the field in order to assess the potential role of predators in the dissemination of a nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV).
  • 2 Preference tests using three carabid species, Harpalus rufipes De Geer, Pterostichus melanarius Illiger and Agonum dorsale Pont, showed no evidence of discrimination between healthy and diseased larvae of the cabbage moth Mamestra brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) as prey items.
  • 3 Virus infectivity was maintained after passage through the predator's gut. NPV mortality ranged from 97% to 20% when test larvae were exposed to faeces collected immediately after and 15 days post-infected meal respectively.
  • 4 The potential for transfer of inoculum in the environment was estimated in the laboratory by soil bioassay. Carabids continuously passed infective virus to the soil for at least 15 days after feeding on infected larvae.
  • 5 Field experiments showed that carabids which had previously fed on diseased larvae transferred sufficient virus to the soil to cause low levels of mortality in larval populations of the cabbage moth at different instars.

1. Detecting the impacts of invading Bythotrephes cederstrœmi (Crustacea, Onychopoda, Cercopagididae) on zooplankton in North American lakes has been hampered by the brevity of pre-invasion data, and by the difficulty of distinguishing the effects of the invader from other stresses. The data from Harp Lake in Ontario, Canada, circumvent these difficulties. Bythotrephes appeared in the lake in 1993. There is a 15-year pre-invasion data set, and no significant complicating concurrent stresses.
2. The species composition and the size structure of the crustacean zooplankton community of Harp Lake changed after the invasion. Several small species either declined dramatically in abundance (e.g. Bosmina longirostris , Tropocyclops extensus ) or disappeared ( Chydorus sphaericus , Diaphanosoma birgei , Bosmina ( Neobosmina ) tubicen ). In contrast the abundance of the larger cladocerans Holopedium gibberum and Daphnia galeata mendotae and the hypolimnetic copepod Leptodiaptomus sicilis increased. Several univariate and all multivariate summarizations of zooplankton abundance, biomass and size structure highlighted the uniqueness of the post-invasion community.
3. The alterations in the zooplankton community could not be attributed to changes in lake acidity, thermal regimes, penetration by ultraviolet light, nutrient status, fish stocking or the abundances of native invertebrate predators, but they were correlated with Bythotrephes abundance, both within and among years. Hence, we hypothesize that the invasion by Bythotrephes has significantly altered the crustacean zooplankton community of Harp Lake.  相似文献

The starch content of shoot-forming and non-shoot-forming tobacco callus cultured in light and darkness was determined. A variety of carbohydrates and cytokinins incorporated into the culture medium were effective in bringing about starch accumulation and shoot formation in the tissue. In addition, the respiratory activity of the callus, grown in the presence or absence of gibberellic acid, was measured. A strong correlation between the starch content of the tissue, its rate of respiration, and shoot formation was observed.  相似文献

  • 1 Encarsia tricolor Förster is a heteronomous hyperparasitoid: females develop as primary endoparasitoids of Homoptera, whereas males develop hyperparasitically in primary endoparasitoids, including conspecific females.
  • 2 When offered pupae of Encarsia inaron (Walker) or conspecific pupae, E.tricolor showed a distinct preference to exploit E.inaron for male production.
  • 3 Parasitoids were given the opportunity to gain different types of ovipositional experience on male and female hosts and were then offered patches containing mixtures of male and female hosts in various ratios. The mean sex ratio which they laid was not dependent on the relative availability of each type of host, whereas prior ovipositional experience had a significant effect.
  • 4 Adaptive reasons for the observed oviposition strategies are suggested.

Water availability is the most limiting factor to global plant productivity, yet photosynthetic responses to seasonal drought cycles are poorly understood, with conflicting reports on which limiting process is the most important during drought. We address the problem using a model‐data synthesis approach to look at canopy level fluxes, integrating twenty years of half hour data gathered by the FLUXNET network across six Mediterranean sites. The measured canopy level, water and carbon fluxes were used, together with an inverse canopy ecophysiological model, to estimate the bulk canopy conductance, bulk mesophyll conductance, and the canopy scale carbon pools in both the intercellular spaces and at the site of carboxylation in the chloroplasts. Thus the roles of stomatal and mesophyll conductance in the regulation of internal carbon pools and photosynthesis could be separated. A quantitative limitation analysis allowed for the relative seasonal responses of stomatal, mesophyll, and biochemical limitations to be gauged. The concentration of carbon in the chloroplast was shown to be a potentially more reliable estimator of assimilation rates than the intercellular carbon concentration. Both stomatal conductance limitations and mesophyll conductance limitations were observed to regulate the response of photosynthesis to water stress in each of the six species studied. The results suggest that mesophyll conductance could bridge the gap between conflicting reports on plant responses to soil water stress, and that the inclusion of mesophyll conductance in biosphere–atmosphere transfer models may improve their performance, in particular their ability to accurately capture the response of terrestrial vegetation productivity to drought.  相似文献
