The effects of temperature (15 °C, 25 °C, 30°C and 24–29°C), relative humidity (45%, 85% and 86–98%) and harvest maturity on the storage behaviour of cormels of the edible aroid species Colocasia esculenta and Xanthosoma sagittifolium were studied. The changes monitored were respiration rates, weight losses, incidence of decay and sprouting. Post-harvest losses that occurred during storage were influenced by the storage conditions, the state of maturity at harvest and the morphological characteristics of the cormels. When stored under high temperature and humidity more sprouting and decay occurred with C. esculenta cormels than with X. sagittifolium cormels. Less sprouting and decay occurred with Colocasia cormels at high temperature and low humidity than at high temperature and high humidity but higher weight losses were recorded. Wound pathogens were the major cause of post-harvest deterioration in Colocasia cormels and the causal pathogen of cormel decay was Sclerotium rolfsii. Under conditions of low temperature (15 °C) and high humidity (85%), cormels of both C. esculenta and X. sagittifolium were successfully stored for periods of 5–6 weeks. Similar storage periods were also possible under tropical ambient conditions with the Xanthosoma cultivars used in these experiments. Under the same storage conditions up to 60% decay occurred in the Colocasia cormels indicating the need for post-harvest fungicide treatment.  相似文献

Net uptake of by non-nodulated soybean plants [Glycine max (L.) Merr.cv. Ransom] growing in flowing hydroponiccultures containing 0–5, 1.0 and 10-0 mol m–3 was measured daily during a 24-d period of vegetativedevelopment to determine if amplitude of maximum and minimumrates of net uptake are responsive to external concentrations of . Removal of from the replenished solutions during each 24-h period was determinedby ion chromatography. Neither dry matter accumulation nor theperiodicity of oscillations in net uptakerate was altered bythe external concentrations. The maxima of the oscillations in net uptake rate, however, increased nearly3-fold in response to external concentrations. The maxima and minima, respectively, changed from 4.0 and 0–6mmol per gram root dry weight per day at an external solution level of 05 mol m–3 to 15–2and -2–7 mmol per gram root dry weight per day at an external solution level of 10–0mol m–3 . The negative values for minimum net uptake rate from10–0 mol m–3 solutions show that net efflux was occurring andindicate thatthe magnitude of the efflux component of net uptake was responsiveto external concentration of . 1. Measuring functional connectivity, the ability of species to move between resource patches, is essential for conservation in fragmented landscapes. However, current methods are highly time consuming and expensive. 2. Population synchrony‐ the correlation in time series of counts between two long‐term population monitoring sites, has been suggested as a possible proxy measure of functional connectivity. To date, population synchrony has been shown to correlate with proxies for movement frequency such as the coverage of suitable habitat types in intervening landscapes, and also least cost distances around hostile land cover types. 3. This provides tentative evidence that synchrony is directly driven by movements of the focal species, but an alternative explanation is that these land cover types affect the movement of interacting species (e.g. natural enemies of the focal species) which can also drive synchronous population dynamics. Therefore, what is needed is a test directly relating population synchrony to movement frequencies of a focal species. 4. Here we use data from a 21 year mark‐release‐recapture study and show that population synchrony does indeed predict movements of a focal butterfly species Boloria eunomia (Esper). 5. There is growing evidence that population synchrony can be a useful conservation tool to measure functional connectivity.  相似文献

The list of British Red Data birds (Batten et al. 1990) includes 117 species, 109 of which qualified on one or more quantitative criteria referring to rarity, localized distribution, population decline and international importance. A wealth of data on bird population levels and trends in the United Kingdom and Europe has recently become available, allowing refinement and improvement of the criteria for qualification. Here we propose that in assigning priorities for conservation action in the U.K. (Britain and Northern Ireland), three biological axes need to be considered: national threat (measured as rarity, localized distribution and population decline in the U.K.), international importance (the proportion of the European population in the U.K.) and international threat (European/global conservation status). Only the first two of these axes were considered by Batten et al. (1990). Each of these axes has been sub-divided into high, medium and low categories using quantitative thresholds, and from this we produce a national 'conservation cube' (three axes, each with three categories and thus 27 cells). Data permitting, every species in the U.K. can be allocated to one of these cells. We suggest that species high on either (or both) of the national or international threat axes be considered as species of high conservation priority (the red list) and that among the remainder those that rank at least medium on one of the axes be considered as of medium conservation priority (the amber list). All other species are of low conservation priority (the green list). We suggest that this three-axis model could be applicable to other taxa and countries.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Given recent actions to increase sustained yield of moose (Alces alces) in Alaska, USA, we examined factors affecting yield and moose demographics and discussed related management. Prior studies concluded that yield and density of moose remain low in much of Interior Alaska and Yukon, Canada, despite high moose reproductive rates, because of predation from lightly harvested grizzly (Ursus arctos) and black bear (U. americanus) and wolf (Canis lupus) populations. Our study area, Game Management Unit (GMU) 20A, was also in Interior Alaska, but we describe elevated yield and density of moose. Prior to our study, a wolf control program (1976–1982) helped reverse a decline in the moose population. Subsequent to 1975, moose numbers continued a 28-year, 7-fold increase through the initial 8 years of our study (λB1 = 1.05 during 1996–2004, peak density = 1,299 moose/1,000 km2). During these initial 8 hunting seasons, reported harvest was composed primarily of males ( = 88%). Total harvest averaged 5% of the prehunt population and 57 moose/1,000 km2, the highest sustained harvest-density recorded in Interior Alaska for similar-sized areas. In contrast, sustained total harvests of <10 moose/1,000 km2 existed among low-density, predator-limited moose populations in Interior Alaska (≤417 moose/1,000 km2). During the final 3 years of our study (2004–2006), moose numbers declined (λB2 = 0.96) as intended using liberal harvests of female and male moose ( = 47%) that averaged 7% of the prehunt population and 97 moose/1,000 km2. We intentionally reduced high densities in the central half of GMU 20A (up to 1,741 moose/1,000 km2 in Nov) because moose were reproducing at the lowest rate measured among wild, noninsular North American populations. Calf survival was uniquely high in GMU 20A compared with 7 similar radiocollaring studies in Alaska and Yukon. Low predation was the proximate factor that allowed moose in GMU 20A to increase in density and sustain elevated yields. Bears killed only 9% of the modeled postcalving moose population annually in GMU 20A during 1996–2004, in contrast to 18–27% in 3 studies of low-density moose populations. Thus, outside GMU 20A, higher bear predation rates can create challenges for those desiring rapid increases in sustained yield of moose. Wolves killed 8–15% of the 4 postcalving moose populations annually (10% in GMU 20A), hunters killed 2–6%, and other factors killed 1–6%. Annually during the increase phase in GMU 20A, calf moose constituted 75% of the predator-killed moose and predators killed 4 times more moose than hunters killed. Wolf predation on calves remained largely additive at the high moose densities studied in GMU 20A. Sustainable harvest-densities of moose can be increased several-fold in most areas of Interior Alaska where moose density and moose: predator ratios are lower than in GMU 20A and nutritional status is higher. Steps include 1) reducing predation sufficient to allow the moose population to grow, and 2) initiating harvest of female moose to halt population growth and maximize harvest after density-dependent moose nutritional indices reach or approach the thresholds we previously published.  相似文献

Abstract Avian blue‐green eggshell coloration has been proposed as a female signal of genetic or phenotypic quality to males. However, little is known about the relative importance of additive genetic and environmental effects as sources of eggshell colour variation in natural populations. Using 5 years of data and animal models, we explored these effects in a free‐living population of pied flycatchers. Permanent environmental and year effects were negligible, although year environmental variance (VYear) was significant for all but one of the traits. However, we found high–moderate narrow‐sense heritabilities for some colour parameters. Within‐clutch colour variability showed the highest coefficient of additive genetic variation (i.e. evolvability). Previous evidence suggests that eggshell colour is sexually selected in this species, males enhancing parental effort in clutches with higher colour variability and peak values. Eggshell colour could be driven by good‐genes selection in pied flycatchers although further genetic studies should confirm this possibility.  相似文献

The Hawaiian endemic Metrosideros polymorpha is known for its high levels of morphological diversity and localized adaptation to a range of habitats. At the ecotone between bogs and forests, individuals exhibiting morphological extremes can be found within a few metres of each other. The objective of this study was to examine the genetic diversity and structure of morphologically distinct neighbouring populations of M. polymorpha, growing in bogs and adjacent forests across multiple islands. We explored these relationships using the molecular technique of inter‐simple sequence repeats (ISSRs). The majority (90.79%) of genetic variation was found within populations, 8.53% of the differentiation among populations can be attributed to differences between microhabitat types within islands and very little of the genetic differentiation is explained by the differences among islands (0.68%). These high levels of genetic homogeneity across populations could be the result of extensive gene flow and/or recent isolation of populations. We introduce a nearest genetic neighbour (NGN) analysis to examine detailed relationships of dispersal within and among populations by habitat and island. Riverine transport of organic carbon (OC) to the ocean is a significant component in the global carbon (C) cycle and the concentration of total organic carbon (TOC) in rivers and lakes is vital for ecosystem properties and water quality for human use. By use of a large dataset comprising chemical variables and detailed catchment information in ~1000 Norwegian pristine lakes covering a wide climatic range, we were able to predict TOC concentrations with high accuracy. We further predict, using a ‘space‐for‐time’ approach and a downscaled, moderate, climate change scenario, that northern, boreal regions likely will experience strong increases in OC export from catchments to surface waters. Median concentrations of OC in these lakes will increase by 65%, from the current median of 2.0–3.3 mg C L?1. This is a long‐term effect, primarily mediated by increased terrestrial vegetation cover in response to climate change. This increase OC will have severe impacts on food‐webs, productivity and human use. Given the robustness of the estimates and the general applicability of the parameters, we suggest that these findings would be relevant to boreal areas in general.  相似文献
