Benthic cover, current strengths, and fish abundance and diversity were examined on 150 lagoonal patch reefs and mapped to determine their distribution, inter-relationships, and relationship to the fisheries closure in Glovers Reef Atoll. Current strength was highest at both the northern and southern ends of the atoll and largely controlled by local wind and weakly by tidal forcing. Benthic functional group distributions varied throughout the atoll and had distinct areas of dominance. In contrast, dominance of coral species was weaker, reflecting the lost cover and zonation of Acropora, Porites, and Montastraea that were reported in the 1970s. Hard and soft corals dominated the windward rim, while the central and leeward lagoon had lower current strengths and sea grass and fleshy green algae were relatively more abundant. Brown erect algae were relatively more common in the north and calcifying green and red algae the southern ends of the atoll. Only Montastraea-Agaricia agaricites distributions were similar to reports from the 1970s with high relative dominance in the southern and northeast atoll. The central-northern zone, which was described as an Acropora zone in the 1970s, was not recognizable, and Porites porites, P. astreoides, Millepora alcicornis, and Favia fragum were the most abundant species during this survey. Hard and soft coral cover abundance declined away from the reef rim and tidal channels and was associated with fast seawater turnover and high surgeonfish abundance. Consequently, the windward rim area has retained the most original and persistent hard-soft coral and surgeonfish community and is considered a priority for future management, if the goal is to protect coral from fishing impacts.  相似文献

A survey of epibenthic prosobranch gastropods was undertaken in both seagrass and hard substratum (coral or old reef rock) habitats on opposite sides of the Florida Keys (Florida Bay and Hawk Channel) to compare faunal differences attributable to differences in the above two habitats and environments. Additionally, two data sets (26 continuous months) of daytime dissolved oxygen, surface salinity and water temperature from Florida Bay (Long Key) and Hawk Channel (Key Largo) environments were compared to determine differences that might constitute environmental stresses likely to affect the fauna. The above data were collected to determine if several hypotheses concerning effects of stress on organisms, assemblage, community and faunal composition were consistent with data on assemblage structure. These hypotheses were that: (1) stress should reduce the average size of organisms; (2) shorten food chains; (3) reduce predation intensity; (4) reduce species richness and diversity; and (5) increase the relative abundance of predator-susceptible ancestral species (i.e. Archaegastropoda). Water quality data suggest that the two most likely forms of stress in deeper (>1 m) areas of Florida Bay adjacent to the Keys are cold water temperatures associated with winter cold fronts and low predawn oxygen associated with warm summer temperatures, high salinity, and periodic algal and seagrass drift buildups. Seagrass sites had high population densities and low diversity due to the dominance of Astraea americana Gmelin (American star shell) in Florida Bay and Modulus modulus L. in Hawk Channel seagrass habitats. Florida Bay sites had high species richness on a small spatial scale, but Hawk Channel sites had more species and greater encounter rates of new species on a larger scale. Predawn oxygen measurements taken during July in four habitats were positively correlated with prosobranch species richness and diversity. Faunal data, analysed on a population density basis, fit the above hypotheses of body size, trophic level, and evolutionary age of the species. Attempts to measure predation on an experimental prosobranch (A. americana) were unsuccessful but a tethering experiment with a sea urchin (Echinometra lucunter L.) indicated higher predation in the less stressful Hawk Channel than Florida Bay hard substratum sites. Stress appears to reduce the abundance of higher trophic levels (both prosobranch and finfish predators) resulting in the dominance of ancestral forms not adapted to predation but tolerant of environmental stress. Eutrophication or increased oxygen demands in Florida Bay could result in further species richness and diversity declines.  相似文献

Climate change is reshaping biological communities against a background of existing human pressure. Evaluating the impacts of multiple stressors on community dynamics can be particularly challenging in species‐rich ecosystems, such as coral reefs. Here, we investigate whether life‐history strategies and cotolerance to different stressors can predict community responses to fishing and temperature‐driven bleaching using a 20‐year time series of coral assemblages in Kenya. We found that the initial life‐history composition of coral taxa largely determined the impacts of bleaching and coral loss. Prior to the 1998 bleaching event, coral assemblages within no‐take marine reserves were composed of three distinct life histories – competitive, stress‐tolerant and weedy– and exhibited strong declines following bleaching with limited subsequent recovery. In contrast, fished reefs had lower coral cover, fewer genera and were composed of stress‐tolerant and weedy corals that were less affected by bleaching over the long term. Despite these general patterns, we found limited evidence for cotolerance as coral genera and life histories were variable in their sensitivities to fishing and bleaching. Overall, fishing and bleaching have reduced coral diversity and led to altered coral communities of ‘survivor’ species with stress‐tolerant and weedy life histories. Our findings are consistent with expectations that climate change interacting with existing human pressure will result in the loss of coral diversity and critical reef habitat.  相似文献

Since 2006, Geomyces destructans, the causative agent of white nose syndrome (WNS), has killed over 5.7 million bats in North America. The current hypothesis suggests that this novel fungus is an invasive species from Europe, but little is known about the diversity within the genus Geomyces and its distribution on bats in the United States. We documented the psychrophilic and psychrotolerant fungal flora of hibernating bats prior to the arrival of WNS using culture-based techniques. A total of 149 cultures, which were obtained from 30 bats in five bat hibernacula located in four caves and one mine, were sequenced for the entire internal transcribed spacer (ITS) nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) region. Approximately 53 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) at 97% similarity were recovered from bat wings, with the community dominated by fungi within the genera Cladosporium, Fusarium, Geomyces, Mortierella, Penicillium, and Trichosporon. Eleven Geomyces isolates were obtained and placed in at least seven distinct Geomyces clades based on maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analyses. Temperature experiments revealed that all Geomyces strains isolated are psychrotolerant, unlike G. destructans, which is a true psychrophile. Our results confirm that a large diversity of fungi, including several Geomyces isolates, occurs on bats prior to the arrival of WNS. Most of these isolates were obtained from damaged wings. Additional studies need to be conducted to determine potential ecological roles of these abundant Geomyces strains isolated from bats.  相似文献

The Hottentot Buttonquail Turnix hottentotus is an endangered terrestrial turnicid and is endemic to the Fynbos biome, South Africa. Due to its secretive nature and apparent rarity almost nothing is known about the species, but its range has been subject to anthropogenic modification, invasion by alien plant species and is vulnerable to climate change. To model covariates associated with the presence of Hottentot Buttonquail we undertook flush surveys across the Fynbos biome, covering 275 km. Habitat variables at encounter sites were recorded in vegetation plots, as well as locations without encounters. There was a critical number of observers needed during a flush survey in order to account for buttonquail presence, with no encounters with less than five participants. After accounting for this, we found probability of encounters decreased with increasing time-since-fire. Probability of encounters were also negatively associated with increasing percentage grass and other vegetation cover. We also found no association between percentage cover of Restionaceae plants and encounter probability, considered previously to be the best indicator of Hottentot Buttonquail presence. This information will be of use to those interested in managing habitat for this species and should inform future conservation efforts.  相似文献

The Karoo is a unique region in South Africa in terms of its ecological processes and endemic species. Large areas are needed to maintain viable populations of nomadic birds that follow erratic rainfall events and subsequent food and nesting resources, as well as ephemeral standing water. Whereas many species are adapted to arid conditions, our trait-based analysis found that an unusually large percentage (almost 45%) of 315 bird species in the semi-arid Karoo region rely on water to some degree. Indeed, some birds may have benefited from human activities to date, such as through the provision of water for livestock. However, this reliance on water makes birds vulnerable to changes in water quality stemming from various industrial developments. Given the large areas of the Karoo under consideration for concessions, the most noteworthy of these is hydraulic fracturing for shale gas, which results in a large quantity of waste water (‘produced water’) that contains a wide variety of chemicals, including petroleum byproducts. Given the negative impacts of secondary waste water on wildlife in other parts of the world where shale-gas exploration is being undertaken, careful attention must be given to preventing access to such produced water by an estimated 60 to 141 species of birds that make use of the water in the Karoo.  相似文献
