The present study article examines the shapes of centipede species–area relationships (SARs) in the Mediterranean islands, compares the results of the linear form of the power model between archipelagos, discusses biological significance of the power model parameters with other taxa on the Aegean archipelago, and tests for a significant small‐island effect (SIE). We used 11 models to test the SARs and we compared the quality‐of‐fit of all candidate models. The power function ranked first and Z‐values was in the range 0.106–0.334. We assessed the presence of SIEs by fitting both a continuous and discontinuous breakpoint regression model. The continuous breakpoint regression functions never performed much better than the closest discontinuous model as a predictor of centipede species richness. We suggest that the relatively low Z‐values in our data partly reflect better dispersal abilities in centipedes than in other soil invertebrate taxa. Longer periods of isolation and more recent island formation may explain the somewhat lower constant c in the western Mediterranean islands compared to the Aegean islands. Higher breakpoint values in the western Mediterranean may also be a result of larger distance to the mainland and longer separation times. The Gram stain differentiates bacteria into two fundamental varieties of cells. Bacteria that retain the initial crystal violet stain (purple) are said to be 'Gram-positive,' whereas those that are decolorized and stain red with carbol fuchsin (or safranin) are said to be 'Gram-negative.' This staining response is based on the chemical and structural makeup of the cell walls of both varieties of bacteria. Gram-positives have a thick, relatively impermeable wall that resists decolorization and is composed of peptidoglycan and secondary polymers. Gram-negatives have a thin peptidoglycan layer plus an overlying lipid-protein bilayer known as the outer membrane, which can be disrupted by decolorization. Some bacteria have walls of intermediate structure and, although they are officially classified as Gram-positives because of their linage, they stain in a variable manner. One prokaryote domain, the Archaea, have such variability of wall structure that the Gram stain is not a useful differentiating tool. 相似文献

The relationships among the area, hue, saturation and brightness of orange colouration and sperm traits in the guppy Poecilia reticulata were investigated. Males with greater areas of orange colouration had significantly larger sperm loads, more motile sperm and longer sperm relative to males with relatively little orange colouration. Males with greater areas of orange colouration did not possess more viable sperm than males with relatively little orange colouration. There was no evidence that any of the sperm traits were related to the hue, saturation or brightness of the orange colouration. These results are discussed in the context of the roles that direct and indirect selection might play in maintaining female preference for male guppies with large areas of orange colouration. 相似文献

Predator inspection behaviour at different levels of attack motivation (attack status of the predator) was investigated in European minnows Phoxinus phoxinus from a population sympatric with pike Esox lucius , during controlled laboratory experiments. Shoals of minnows performed more predator inspections and formed larger inspection group sizes shortly after an attack by a pike. After inspection, minnows returned to the safety of the main shoal, regardless of predator motivation. Minnows which inspected last-before and first-after a strike by a pike modified their behaviour after inspection; they reduced feeding, increased shoaling, flicked their dorsal and pectoral fins and skittered. This behaviour signified alarm and appeared to reflect the severity of the threat posed by the predator at the time of inspection. Fish that had inspected when the pike displayed low attack motivation did not modify their behaviour after inspection to reflect alarm. Information concerning the attack motivation of the predator is probably transferred passively throughout the shoal by changed inspector behaviour and by inspection rate. These data demonstrate that: (1) minnows modified their behaviour after inspection to reflect a predator's attack motivation; and (2) minnows which inspected immediately before a strike appeared to anticipate the future attack and modified their behaviour accordingly. 相似文献

Post‐copulatory sexual selection processes, including sperm competition and cryptic female choice (CFC), can operate based on major histocompatibility (MH) genes. We investigated sperm competition between male alternative reproductive tactics [jack (sneaker) and hooknose (guard)] of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). Using a full factorial design, we examined in vitro competitive fertilization success of paired jack and hooknose males at three time points after sperm activation (0, 15 and 60 s) to test for male competition, CFC and time effects on male fertilization success. We also examined egg‐mediated CFC at two MH genes by examining both the relationship between competitive fertilization success and MH divergence as well as inheritance patterns of MH alleles in resulting offspring. We found that jacks sired more offspring than hooknose males at 0 s post‐activation; however, jack fertilization success declined over time post‐activation, suggesting a trade‐off between sperm speed and longevity. Enhanced fertilization success of jacks (presumably via higher sperm quality) may serve to increase sneaker tactic competitiveness relative to dominant hooknose males. We also found evidence of egg‐mediated CFC (i.e. female × male interaction) influencing competitive fertilization success; however, CFC was not acting on the MH genes as we found no relationship between fertilization success and MH II β1 or MH I α1 divergence and we found no deviations from Mendelian inheritance of MH alleles in the offspring. Our study provides insight into evolutionary mechanisms influencing variation in male mating success within alternative reproductive tactics, thus underscoring different strategies that males can adopt to attain success. 相似文献

Presence of the dihydrouridine (D) stem in the mitochondrial cysteine tRNA
is unusually variable among lepidosaurian reptiles. Phylogenetic and
comparative analyses of cysteine tRNA gene sequences identify eight
parallel losses of the D-stem, resulting in D-arm replacement loops.
Sampling within the monophyletic Acrodonta provides no evidence for
reversal. Slipped-strand mispairing of noncontiguous repeated sequences
during replication or direct replication slippage can explain repeats
observed within cysteine tRNAs that contain a D-arm replacement loop. These
two mechanisms involving replication slippage can account for the loss of
the cysteine tRNA D-stem in several lepidosaurian lineages, and may
represent general mechanisms by which the secondary structures of
mitochondrial tRNAs are altered.

Estimates of Steller sea lion ( Eumetopias jubatus ) pup production are valuable for estimating population trend and size. Currently in Alaska, pups are counted by visiting rookeries, driving older animals into the water, then walking through the rookeries and counting the pups, a highly disruptive procedure. At smaller rookeries, with good vantage points, pups are occasionally counted from the periphery of rookeries without disturbing the sea lions. We evaluated counts made from medium-format, color, aerial photographs as an alternative to drive counts and peripheral counts. Neither the peripheral counts nor the aerial photographic counts disturbed animals on the rokeries. There were strong 1:1 linear relationships between photographic counts and drive counts ( r 2 = 0.966, P < 0.001) and between photographic counts and peripheral counts ( r 2 = 0.999, P < 0.001). Precision was similar for all three methods of counting. We suggest that medium-format, color, aerial photographs is appropriate for routine surveys of Steller sea lion pups in Alaska because it is not disruptive to the hauled-out sea lions and provides comparable estimates with similar precision to drive and peripheral counts.
