Until now the Doswelliidae was considered a monospecific family including Doswellia kaltenbachi from the Late Triassic of North America. The phylogenetic position of this taxon remained enigmatic until recently, when a sister‐group relationship with the Proterochampsidae was suggested. In the present contribution we describe the new doswelliid species Archeopelta arborensis gen. et sp. nov. from the Middle–Late Triassic of Brazil. A cladistic analysis recovered Archeopelta, Doswellia, and Tarjadia within a monophyletic group of basal archosauriforms, the Doswelliidae. The monophyly of this family is supported by the presence of osteoderm ornamentation that is coarse, incised, and composed of regular pits and the presence of an unornamented anterior articular lamina. Archeopelta is more closely related to Doswellia than to other archosauriforms by the presence of basipterygoid processes anterolaterally orientated, dorsal centra with a convex surface, width of the neural arch plus ribs of the first primordial sacral that are three times the length of the neural arch, and iliac blade laterally deflected, with strongly convex dorsal margin, and a length less than three times its height. The phylogenetic analysis indicates that Doswellidae is the closest large monophyletic entity to Archosauria, which achieved a wide palaeolatitudinal distribution during the late Middle and Late Triassic time span. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 161 , 839–871.  相似文献

Virally introduced mouse tyrosinase expression was checked both in vitro and in vivo in chicken cells and tissues. The results indicate that a constitutive promoter is able to express mouse tyrosinase in a variety of cells and tissues both in vitro and in vivo. Tyrosinase expression is marked by pigment production in situ, which is visible at macroscopic as well as microscopic levels without the use of substrates. It is concluded that tyrosinase can be a valuable marker for tracking gene insertion since it is spontaneously expressed. The expression of tyrosinase in some cells and tissues has a detrimental effect, however, and should be controlled by tissue-specific promoters.  相似文献

In most insects known to tolerate freezing, the adaptation has been completely canalized and permanently incorporated into the genotype, either as a perennial or seasonal phenotypic switch. The exceptions to this (i.e. insects for which the adaptation is, in some manner, incomplete) represent examples of considerable evolutionary interest. To date, the few examples known of incomplete adaptation are readily identified by survival metrics. Caterpillars of the New Zealand Magpie moth (Nyctemera annulata Boisduval) represent a previously undescribed stage in the adaptive continuum of freeze tolerant insects from freeze avoidance to tolerance: a form of freeze tolerance that is intermediate between partial and complete freeze tolerance, the relative ‘incompleteness’ of which, is only apparent using indices of extended fitness (successful metamorphosis). This intermediate form is characterized by: the capacity to mechanistically tolerate equilibrium freezing (>75% survival); a narrow survival envelope below equilibrium freezing temperatures (3–4 °C); and a limited ability to complete metamorphosis after freezing (approximately 27% emergence). The low temperature capabilities of these caterpillars provide support for the hypothesis that the capacity to mechanistically tolerate internal extracellular ice formation by freeze tolerant holometabolous insects is acquired prior to the metabolic adaptations necessary to enable continuation of the life cycle.  相似文献

Efficient conduction of water inside leaves is essential for leaf function, yet the hydraulic-mediated impact of drought on gas exchange remains poorly understood. Here we examine the decline and subsequent recovery of leaf water potential ( Ψ leaf), leaf hydraulic conductance ( K leaf), and midday transpiration ( E ) in four temperate woody species exposed to controlled drought conditions ranging from mild to lethal. During drought the vulnerability of K leaf to declining Ψ leaf varied greatly among the species sampled. Following drought, plants were rewatered and the rate of E and K leaf recovery was found to be strongly dependent on the severity of the drought imposed. Gas exchange recovery was strongly correlated with the relatively slow recovery of K leaf for three of the four species, indicating conformity to a hydraulic-stomatal limitation model of plant recovery. However, there was also a shift in the sensitivity of stomata to Ψ leaf suggesting that the plant hormone abscisic acid may be involved in limiting the rate of stomatal reopening. The level of drought tolerance varied among the four species and was correlated with leaf hydraulic vulnerability. These results suggest that species-specific variation in hydraulic properties plays a fundamental role in steering the dynamic response of plants during recovery.  相似文献

An apoplastic pathway, the so‐called bypass flow, is important for Na+ uptake in rice (Oryza sativa L.) under saline conditions; however, the precise site of entry is not yet known. We report the results of our test of the hypothesis that bypass flow of Na+ in rice occurs at the site where lateral roots emerge from the main roots. We investigated Na+ uptake and bypass flow in lateral rootless mutants (lrt1, lrt2), a crown rootless mutant (crl1), their wild types (Oochikara, Nipponbare and Taichung 65, respectively) and in seedlings of rice cv. IR36. The results showed that shoot Na+ concentration in lrt1, lrt2 and crl1 was lower (by 20–23%) than that of their wild types. In contrast, the bypass flow quantified using trisodium‐8‐hydroxy‐1,3,6‐pyrenetrisulphonic acid (PTS) was significantly increased in the mutants, from an average of 1.1% in the wild types to 3.2% in the mutants. Similarly, bypass flow in shoots of IR36 where the number of lateral and crown roots had been reduced through physical and hormonal manipulations was dramatically increased (from 5.6 to 12.5%) as compared to the controls. The results suggest that the path of bypass flow in rice is not at the sites of lateral root emergence.  相似文献

Five muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) cultivar seedlots from a commercialsource and freshly produced seeds of two cultivars, when artificiallyaged, were found to differ in their viability and vigour asdetermined by germination tests. Furthermore, the various commercialseedlots without ageing also exhibit a range of deteriorationlevels. Low vigour seeds had higher respiratory quotient valuesthan the high vigour seeds as a result of a higher level ofCO2 production. This high level of CO2 evolution in low vigourseeds may have been due to anaerobic respiration. Levels of acetaldehyde and ethanol produced by imbibing seedswere negatively associated with seed viability and vigour. After6 h of imbibition low vigour seeds produced significantly moreethanol and acetaldehyde than high vigour seeds. After 24 hof imbibition, ethanol continued to accumulate in the commercialseedlots up to 10-fold the amount produced after 6 h of imbibition,whereas, acetaldehyde levels increased less. However, in thefreshly produced, artificially aged seeds (except the most extremeageing), ethanol levels were reduced and no acetaldehyde productioncould be detected, indicating re-utilization of ethanol. It is suggested that ethanol production in the first hours ofimbibition can be used as a reliable index to predict germinationin muskmelon seedlots. The low prevalence of schistosome-infected snails in hyperendemichabitats, and the demonstrated ability of snails, in general,to recognize and eliminate a myriad of foreign substances and/orinfectious agents, lead to the postulate that host resistanceto larval trematodes must be considered the "rule," while susceptibility(compatibility) represents an exceptional occurrence. In thisreview, we discuss a variety of possible mechanisms by whichcompatibility between trematodes and their molluscan host mightbe attained. Included among these are parasite mimicry of snailhost molecules, prevention of opsonization, interference withhemocyte behavior or differential stimulation of hemocyte metabolicprocesses. Evidence that compatibility is the result of theability of larvae to resist toxic host molecules or to acquireprotective host components on their surface membranes is lacking.Clearly, there are multiple variables of both host and parasiteorigin which ultimately determine compatibility. Careful identificationand dissection of these variables will be required before weachieve a complete understanding of how compatible snail-trematodeassociations are established and maintained.  相似文献

The aster leafhopper (Macrosteles fascifrons), injected with an isolate of Spiroplasma citri obtained from brittle root-diseased horseradish (Armoracia rusticana), transmitted the spiroplasma to horseradish and China aster (Callistephus chinensis.) After feeding on plants infected with S. citri, M. fascifrons transmitted the spiroplasma from aster to aster and horseradish, from yellow rocket (Barbarea vulgaris) to aster, and from turnip (Brassica rapa) to turnip. Symptoms in infected horseradish were chlorosis and stunting of newly formed leaves, discoloration of root phloem, and reduced plant growth typical of brittle root disease. Chlorosis, stunting, and asymmetry of young leaves occurred in affected aster and turnip. Flowers of infected aster were small and pale in colour and occasionally showed other symptoms including asymmetry, petal distortion, or light green petals. Spiroplasmas were isolated from all plants showing symptoms. Transmission rates by M. fascifrons which acquired S. citri by feeding on infected plants were very low, but injected leafhoppers transmitted more frequently. This is the first report of the transmission of S. citri from diseased to healthy plants by M. fascifrons.  相似文献
