Polyploidy and gametophytic apomixis are two important and associated processes in plants. Many hawthorn species are polyploids and can reproduce both sexually and apomictically. However, the population genetic structure of these species is poorly understood. Crataegus douglasii is represented exclusively by self-compatible tetraploid pseudogamous apomicts across North America, whereas Crataegus suksdorfii found in the Pacific Northwest is known to include self-incompatible diploid sexuals as well as polyploid apomicts. We compare population structure and genetic variability in these two closely related taxa using microsatellite and chloroplast sequence markers. Using 13 microsatellite loci located on four linkage groups, 251 alleles were detected in 239 individuals sampled from 15 localities. Within-population multilocus genotypic variation and molecular diversity are greatest in diploid sexuals and lowest in triploid apomicts. Apart from the isolation of eastern North American populations of C. douglasii , there is little evidence of isolation by distance in this taxon. Genetic diversity in western populations of C. douglasii suggests that gene flow is frequent, and that colonization and establishment are often successful. In contrast, local populations of C. suksdorfii are more markedly differentiated. Gene flow appears to be limited primarily by distance in diploids and by apomixis and self-compatibility in polyploids. We infer that apomixis and reproductive barriers between cytotypes are factors that reduce the frequency of gene flow among populations, and may ultimately lead to allopatric speciation in C. suksdorfii . Our findings shed light on evolution in woody plants that show heterogeneous ploidy levels and reproductive systems.  相似文献

Abstract: Large collections of Eccentrotheca helenia sp. nov. from the lower Cambrian Wilkawillina and Ajax limestones in the Arrowie Basin, South Australia, contain abundant low, cap‐shaped and high, laterally compressed isolated sclerites in addition to partially articulated tubular specimens. The scleritome of Eccentrotheca helenia sp. nov. is fully described for the first time and shown to be formed by ontogenetic fusion of sclerites into successively stacked sclerite rings, forming a larger, tubular structure. The apical termination of the tube is highly variable, but is primarily constructed by low, cap‐shaped sclerites and characterised by a central aperture of variable inclination. The adapical portion of the tube is predominantly constructed by high, laterally compressed sclerites, but individual sclerite rings can contain both cap‐shaped and laterally compressed sclerites along with sclerites of intermediate morphology. The apical aperture presumably housed organic structures for attachment to a hard substrate, but the scleritome also occasionally preserves small lateral perforations between fused sclerites, which may have served to stabilise the scleritome by providing additional points of anchorage. In the Arrowie Basin, E. helenia is found in association with archaeocyath‐microbial‐spongiomorph‐dominated bioherms and most likely inhabited pendant or cryptic habitats within these bioherms. Eccentrotheca‐like sclerites form an integral part of the scleritomes of many tommotiids which may confuse taxonomic analysis. Sclerites previously assigned to ‘E.guano, consistently occur together with sclerites of Kulparina rostrata in stratigraphic intervals consistently older than strata hosting E. helenia. Rare fused specimens indicate that the sclerites of K. rostrata and ‘E.guano belong to the same scleritome.  相似文献

Abstract The distribution of Glossina morsitans centralis, Glossina morsitans morsitans and Glossina pallidipes are described in part of southern Africa, using a range of multivariate techniques applied to climate and remotely sensed vegetation data. Linear discriminant analysis is limited in its predictive power by the assumption of common co-variances in the classes within multivariate environment space. Maximum likelihood classification is one of a variety of alternative methods that do not have this constraint, and produce a better prediction, particularly when a priori probabilities of presence and absence are taken into account. The best predictions are obtained when the habitat is subdivided, prior to classification, on the basis of a bimodality detected on the third component axis of a principal component analysis. The results of the predictions were good, particularly for G.m.centralis and G.m.morsitans , which gave overall correct predictions of 92.8% and 85.1 %, with a Kappa index of agreement between the predion and the training data of 0.7305 and 0.641 respectively. For G.pallidipes , 91.7% of predictions were correct but the value of Kappa was only 0.549. Very clear differences are demonstrated between the habitats of the two subspecies Gmxentralis and G.m.morsitans.  相似文献

1. The relative extent of generalist or specialist resource use strategies is an important question in ecology. A community dominated by specialist strategies suggests a high level of interspecific competition for resources, resulting in the evolutionary development of isolating mechanisms between species (e.g. resource specialization to avoid and/or outcompete other species). A community dominated by generalist strategies suggests less interspecific competition for resources, allowing many taxa to utilize the same resources. In stream systems, generalist food habits are a common strategy among primary consumers, but little is known about resource assimilation strategies (resources incorporated into tissue growth). Published data indicate that generalist resource assimilation strategies may prevail in lotic systems as well.
2. Functional feeding groups (FFGs) are often used to infer resource assimilation among lotic macroinvertebrates (e.g. shredder-detritivore, scraper-herbivore). While these groupings are aptly used to describe invertebrate feeding modes and community structure, the use of FFGs to describe resource assimilation among lotic consumers is not appropriate. Sufficient data now exist to seriously question how accurately FFG assignments describe the processes of energy flow and material transfer between trophic levels in stream ecosystems.
3. Because FFGs may not accurately describe functional attributes in lotic systems, an alternative approach is needed. One approach is to determine the amount of secondary production that is derived from autochthonous (e.g. periphyton and algae) and allochthonous (e.g. detritus) resources directly. A simple model of community function based on this approach is presented. The model incorporates trophic generalists into measurement of consumer–resource energetics in lotic systems.  相似文献

The biomass of tropical forests plays an important role in the global carbon cycle, both as a dynamic reservoir of carbon, and as a source of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere in areas undergoing deforestation. However, the absolute magnitude and environmental determinants of tropical forest biomass are still poorly understood. Here, we present a new synthesis and interpolation of the basal area and aboveground live biomass of old‐growth lowland tropical forests across South America, based on data from 227 forest plots, many previously unpublished. Forest biomass was analyzed in terms of two uncorrelated factors: basal area and mean wood density. Basal area is strongly affected by local landscape factors, but is relatively invariant at regional scale in moist tropical forests, and declines significantly at the dry periphery of the forest zone. Mean wood density is inversely correlated with forest dynamics, being lower in the dynamic forests of western Amazonia and high in the slow‐growing forests of eastern Amazonia. The combination of these two factors results in biomass being highest in the moderately seasonal, slow growing forests of central Amazonia and the Guyanas (up to 350 Mg dry weight ha?1) and declining to 200–250 Mg dry weight ha?1 at the western, southern and eastern margins. Overall, we estimate the total aboveground live biomass of intact Amazonian rainforests (area 5.76 × 106 km2 in 2000) to be 93±23 Pg C, taking into account lianas and small trees. Including dead biomass and belowground biomass would increase this value by approximately 10% and 21%, respectively, but the spatial variation of these additional terms still needs to be quantified.  相似文献

Exposing muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) cultivar seedlots to N2atmosphere created totally anaerobic conditions which stimulatedethanol production and accumulation in both high and low vigourseeds. However, accumulation of ethanol was consistently higherin the low vigour seeds than in the high vigour ones. In addition,CO2 production under N2 and in air suggests the presence ofan apparent ‘Pasteur effect’ in the low vigour seedsbut not in the high vigour seeds. Acetaldehyde production underN2 was very low and did not seem to be associated with seedvigour, probably because of its nature as an intermediate inethanol production. The fast shift toward ethanol may be dueto the fact that alcohol dehydrogenase, the enzyme which catalyzesthe conversion of acetaldehyde to ethanol, exists in sufficientamounts in the imbibing seeds so that it is not a limiting factorin the conversion to ethanol.
