Growth and maintenance components of leaf respiration of cotton grown in elevated carbon dioxide partial pressure 总被引:13,自引:4,他引:9
Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide partial pressures have been shown to have variable direct and indirect effects on plant respiration rates. In this study, growth, leaf respiration, and leaf nitrogen and carbohydrate partitioning were measured in Gossypium hirsutum L. grown in 35 and 65 Pa CO2 for 30d. Growth and maintenance coefficients of leaf respiration were estimated using gas exchange techniques both at night and during the day. Elevated CO2 stimulated biomass production (107%) and net photo-synthetic rates (35–50%). Total day-time respiration (Rd) was not significantly affected by growth CO2 partial pressure. However, night respiration (Rn) of leaves grown in 65 Pa CO2 was significantly greater than that of plants grown in 35 Pa CO2. Correlation of Rd and Rn with leaf expansion rates indicated that plants in both CO2 treatments had equivalent growth respiration coefficients but maintenance respiration was significantly greater in elevated CO2. Increased maintenance coefficients in elevated CO2 appeared to be related to increased starch accumulation rather than to changes in leaf nitrogen. 相似文献

Abstract.
- 1 A method of separating the effects of two important determinants of body size in natural populations, temperature of larval development and level of larval nutrition, by making measurements of thorax length and wing length of adult flies is investigated.
- 2 I show that at any given time variation in body size of Drosophila buzzatii from two sites in eastern Australia is determined primarily by variation in the quality of nutrition available to larvae.
- 3 Throughout the year adult flies are consistently at least 25% smaller in volume than predicted for optimal nutrition at their predicted temperature of larval development.
- 4 Nutritional stress is therefore a year-round problem for these flies.
- 5 Measurements of adult flies emerging from individual breeding substrates (rotting cactus cladodes) show that there is substantial variation among these substrates in the nutrition available to larvae.
- 6 This method will allow study of spatial and temporal variation in the temperature of larval substrates and in the nutritional resources available to flies in natural populations.

Twelve varieties of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) were tested at the seedling and podding growth phases for resistance to infestation and damage to Aphis craccivora Koch. Nine of these cowpeas have previously been known to exhibit seedling resistance and the other three, susceptibility to the insect. A. craccivora could not colonise pods of TVu 9930. Pods of Tvu 36 also manifested a high level of resistance to the aphid. The three seedling susceptible varieties proved quite susceptible to A. craccivora at the podding phase. Ribosomal DNA from Cecidophyopsis mites from different Ribes species was amplified using the polymerase chain reaction and the products digested using restriction enzymes. After separating the DNA fragments on gels, it was possible to identify specimens of mites obtained from field samples by comparing the profiles of their DNA banding patterns with those of known Cecidophyopsis species. Using this analysis, a non-gall forming mite found infesting blackcurrant buds in New Zealand was identified as the gooseberry mite (C. grossulariae). On wild red currant (Ribes spicatum) from Finland showing two sizes of galled buds, the red currant gall mite (C. selachodon) was identified in the larger galls located at the tips of branches and a distinct mite in the smaller galls located on the lower parts of the branches. A mite with a DNA banding profile indistinguishable from this latter mite from R. spicatum was also identified in galled buds of blackcurrant genotypes growing in Finland, including those containing the blackcurrant gall mite (C. n'ftw)-resistance genes P or Ce. The DNA banding profile of this mite resembled most closely that of C. ribis , but was distinct from it. The occurrence of C. grossulariae and this distinct Cecidophyopsis mite on blackcurrant has implications for the genetic control of Cecidophyopsis mites and possibly for the spread of the reversion disease agent in this crop. 相似文献

Samples from 300 – 400 randomly selected winter wheat crops were taken annually at growth stage 73 – 75 from 1976 to 1988 with the exception of 1983 and 1984. The number of samples from each region was proportional to the area of wheat grown in each region. The percentage of the area of the top two leaves affected by diseases, the severity of ear and stem base diseases and, in 6 years, the severity of take-all were recorded. Septoria tritici and Septoria nodorum were, on average, the most severe of the foliar diseases and eyespot (Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides) was the most severe of the stem base diseases. Regional differences in levels of S. tritici, brown rust, sharp eyespot and nodal fusarium were significant. Cultivar resistance affected disease severity, and previous cropping patterns particularly affected take-all and eyespot. Eyespot and sharp eyespot were less severe in late- than in early-sown crops. The percentage of crops treated with a fungicidal spray increased from 14% in 1976 to over 90% between 1983 and 1985. Use of benzimidazole fungicides applied at growth stage 31 declined, while use of morpholines from flag leaf emergence onwards increased between 1985 and 1988. 相似文献

Modifications were made to difference tests on the basis of psychophysical theory and tested using a model system. The A-not A test was modified by the addition of sureness judgements to free the test from response bias; ‘warm-up’improved test sensitivity. Regular duo-trio tests were modified by using the weaker stimulus as the standard, increasing test sensitivity. The paired comparison cannot be used unless the dimension of the difference can be described. However, the warm-up procedure allows opportunity for judges to describe the difference and their own words can then be used for the test. The resulting warmed-up paired comparison was more sensitive than any modification of the duo-trio. 相似文献
