Abstract.  Rehydration in the triatomine bug Rhodnius prolixus (Stål) is dependent on the blood meal, and water balance regulation is crucial for survival of starving bugs. In an experimental arena with zones at different climatic conditions, starved R. prolixus nymphs prefer a cooler and more humid zone, stopping there more often and for longer periods. This is probably a behavioural adaptation to limit water loss and reduce metabolic rate. In the Venezuelan State of Portuguesa, temperature and humidity were monitored in three kinds of potential refugia during the dry season: (i) in a palm roof; (ii) in a crack of the wall of a house; and (iii) in a palm tree crown. Fluctuations in temperature and saturation deficit are not very different inside and outside the palm roof except during a few hours of the day when the sun is at its zenith. In the crack of the wall, the diurnal temperature range is reduced to 6.5 °C compared with 12.4 °C outside, and the saturation deficit varies by only 7.6 hPa compared with 28.6 hPa outside. In the palm tree crown, the daily temperature range is only 4.2 °C compared with 13.8 °C outside, and the saturation deficit is permanently < 5 hPa. The microclimatic conditions in the palm tree crown would appear to be ideal for starving R. prolixus , but this kind of refugium generally harbours low densities of bugs, probably related to a combination of predation, pathogens and lower mean temperature within the crown. Such biotic and abiotic constraints play a lesser role in the less ideal palm roof and wall crack refugia where bugs can proliferate as long as hosts are readily available nearby.  相似文献

Abstract.  The association between the Lophopidae (Hemiptera, Fulgoromorpha) and their host plants was studied within a phylogenetic framework. Host plant use was optimized on Lophopidae phylogeny and the most parsimonious hypothesis is presented. This hypothesis describes the evolution of host plant use by the Lophopidae, and postulates the ancestral plant family used. This scenario is discussed within the biogeographical evolutionary context of the fulgoromorphan families, and is corroborated by information from both insect and host plant fossils. The association of the Lophopidae and their host plants is made by comparing the angiosperms and Lophopidae phylogenies, demonstrating at this level of comparison that the insects show 'taxonomic conservatism' for their host plants.  相似文献

1. Spatial patterns of freshwater fish species at regional and local scales were investigated to explore the possible role of interspecific interactions in influencing distribution and abundance within communities occupying coastal streams of North-Western France.
2. Nine sites from nine streams situated in the same biogeographical region were sampled annually over the 6-year period from 1990 to 1995.
3. Similar habitats (sites) with richer regional colonization pools exhibited proportionally richer local communities in terms of number of species, total density and total biomass of individuals. Furthermore, no negative relationships were found between density and biomass of each of the most common species and local species richness.
4. Results of dynamic regression models (applied to the above-mentioned species) suggest an absence of strong competition between all pairs of species.
5. The evidence on lack of density compensation for species-poor communities and absence of perceptible interspecific competition between species suggest that the communities studied are non-interactive.
6. Two main explanations can be advanced. First, the local abundance of species in the communities studied could be determined through differential responses to unpredictable environmental changes, rather than through biological interactions. Second, as a result of historical events, the communities studied are reduced in congeneric species which can limit, in turn, the influence of interspecific competition in structuring these communities.
7. These results underline the strong influence of regional processes in shaping local riverine fish communities and minimize the possible influence of species interactions in governing these communities.  相似文献

We have previously reported the identification of cell surface glycoproteins in Pleurodeles waltlii gastrulae. In an attempt to study the expression of three of these cell surface glycoproteins (proteins referred to 1, 11 and 14), we have produced monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies by immunizing mice with the spots of the three selected glycoproteins excised from 2D-gels. Expression of the three glycoproteins was detected on the surfaces of all cells during embryonic development. Before hatching, proteins 1, 11 and 14 become expressed in a limited number of tissues.  相似文献

A comparison of the genital features of Arion urbiae and A. anguloi suggests that the species are extremely similar, if not identical. This hypothesis is supported by an electrophoretic analysis of 13 putative enzynme loci, which shows that the two species are also genetically yery similar (I = 0.947), while the related A. subfuscus consists of two distinct genetic types (I = 0.421). These results are further confirmed by a study of esterase profiles obtained with isoelectric focusing. It is therefore concluded that A. urbiae and A. anguloi are most probably conspecifie, whereas the genetic types of A. subfuscus may represent two different species.  相似文献

The incubation routine and mass changes of male and female Blue Petrel Halobaena caerulea were studied at the Kerguelen Islands to investigate factors influencing the durations of incubation stints and foraging trips at sea and the factors determining nest desertion and return to the nest.
The body mass at the start of an incubation shift and also when the bird was relieved varied throughout the incubation period, whereas the mass when birds deserted the nest was stable. Birds deserted the nest when their mass decreased to threshold, independent of the duration of the fast. Temporary egg neglect was observed in successful as well as in unsuccessful breeding attempts, but it increased the risk of breeding failure. The net and daily massgained at sea during the second part of the incubation period were higher than during the first part, suggesting an increase in food availability. During the first part, the mass gained at sea and time spent foraging were inversely related to the mass of the bird before it left the burrow, whereas a similar relationship did not occur thereafter.
The results suggest the occurrence of a fixed mass threshold when birds decide to leave the nest if not relieved by their partner. The mass when a bird left its nest inffuenced the time spent foraging or mass gained when food was scarce. Although decision rules to leave the nest or return from the sea are related to body condition. the possibility of neglecting the eggs temporarily enables Blue Petrels to regulate the trade-off between risks of breeding failure and risks of an increase in adult mortality. A model for behavioural decision to stop incubating or stop feeding, based on a variable set point, is proposed.  相似文献

Brulouis)were grown in a growth chamber on a nutrient solution withoutP1 over 22 d During the first 2 weeks, Pi-starved plants grewas well as control plants The Pi concentration in the planttissue decreased rapidly with time, which suggests that normalbiomass production can be maintained at the expense of internalP1 In addition, photosynthetic CO2 assimilation measured 4-6h after dawn was not affected, but the concentration of glucose,sucrose, and starch in leaves was much higher than in the controls14CO2 pulse-chase experiments earned out on the ninth day oftreatment showed that 14CO2 assimilation was perturbed duringthis initial period, resulting in a larger flow of carbon toboth starch and sucrose At the beginning of the third week ofP1 starvation (15 d after treatment) 14C incorporation intosucrose stayed high relative to controls but this was not thecase for starch At the end of the third week of P1-deficiency,shoot growth was considerably reduced and fresh weight was onlyone-third of that of the control plants. The P1 concentrationof both the leaf and root tissues was less than 1.0 µmolg–1 FW compared to 20-25µmol g1 FW in the controls.Photosynthetic CO2 assimilation was reduced and the leaf concentrationof sucrose and starch, which had begun to decrease after theend of the second week of P1 limitation, became lower than inthe controls. These results obtained on maize plants show thatphotosynthesis and carbon partitioning between sucrose and starchwere strongly affected by P1 deficiency, similar to C3 species. Morphological data, in combination with molecular data, may provide invaluable insights into speciation processes on archipelagos. Land snails offer ample opportunities to evalutate adaptive and non-adaptive speciation scenarios. However, studies investigating processes of differentiation and speciation on the Azores are scarce. The present study comprises a morphometrical analysis of shell and genital characters in a group of Azorean land snails (Pulmonata, Leptaxinae). Geographical isolation appears to be an important mechanism underlying morphological and molecular differentiation in the Azorean Leptaxini, instead of adaptive radiation through ecological differentiation. Nevertheless, we could not exclude the occurrence of ecological speciation on the oldest island (Santa Maria) where two species that markedly differ in shell-shape co-occur.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 166–176.  相似文献

Plum pox virus (PPV) is responsible for sharka disease, one of the most detrimental stone fruit diseases affecting Prunus trees worldwide. Only a few apricot cultivars have been described as resistant, most originating from North American breeding programmes. Several PPV resistance quantitative trait loci (QTLs) have been mapped in various progenies, consistently highlighting the contribution to the resistance of the upper part of linkage group 1 (LG1). However, to date, no consensus has been reached on the precise number of QTLs linked to the resistance to PPV in apricot and P. davidiana or on their accurate position on the genetic linkage map. In the present study, the quantitative resistance of cultivar 'Harlayne' was analysed over five growth periods in a large F1 population. Four QTLs were identified, three mapping on LG1, explaining between 5% and 39% of the observed phenotypic variance. In an effort to further this analysis of PPV resistance in apricot, these results were merged in a single QTL meta-analysis with those of five other PPV resistance analyses available in the literature. Three consensus QTL regions were identified on LG1 and a putative fourth region on LG3. QTL meta-analysis also revealed the contribution of each resistant cultivar to metaQTLs, providing interesting comparative data on the resistance factors shared between the resistance sources used in the various studies. Finally, it was shown that one of the metaQTLs co-localizes with the eukaryotic translation initiation factor eIF4E , thus providing new hypotheses on the mechanisms of PPV resistance in apricot.  相似文献

Abstract: We describe well‐preserved remains of the Pelagornithidae (bony‐toothed birds) from the middle Eocene of Belgium, including a sternum, pectoral girdle bones and humeri of a single individual. The specimens are tentatively assigned to Macrodontopteryx oweni Harrison and Walker, 1976 , which has so far only been known from the holotype skull and a referred proximal ulna. Another species, about two times larger, is represented by an incomplete humerus and tentatively identified as Dasornis emuinus ( Bowerbank, 1854 ). The fossils provide critical new data on the osteology of the pectoral girdle of bony‐toothed birds. For the first time, the sternum of one of the smaller species is preserved, and this bone exhibits a more plesiomorphic morphology than the recently described sternum of the giant Miocene taxon Pelagornis. The coracoid resembles that of the Diomedeidae (albatrosses) in overall morphology, but because bony‐toothed birds lack apomorphies of the Procellariiformes, the similarities are almost certainly owing to convergence. Bony‐toothed birds were often compared with the ‘Pelecaniformes’ by previous authors, who especially made comparisons with the Sulidae (gannets and boobies). However, the coracoid distinctly differs from that of extant ‘pelecaniform’ birds, and the plesiomorphic presence of a foramen nervi supracoracoidei as well as the absence of a well‐delimited articulation facet for the furcula supports a position outside the Suloidea, the clade to which the Sulidae belong.  相似文献
