Mature, mated female Drosophila buzzatii were given a choice of nine microbial communities actively growing on cactus homogenate in laboratory population cages. All communities contained identical naturally occurring bacteria, and comprised bacteria only and bacteria plus one of eight yeast species. Relative frequency of each yeast species ingested and number of eggs laid on each community were measured daily for three successive days. Flies generally preferred to feed and oviposit on those yeast species which are most abundant in rots of Opuntia cactus, and Pichia caclophila was the most preferred yeast. Light intensity, position of the yeast in the cage, and probably aggregation behaviour affected preference. Direct observation of adults was found to be inadequate for determining feeding preference. The ability of the flies to discriminate between yeasts developed with time. By day three, there was a significant correlation ( r = 0.96) between the yeasts preferred for feeding and those preferred for oviposition. Feeding preference may be determined in part by oviposition preference; and the latter appears to be the most fruitful avenue for future research into habitat selection by D. buzzatii-  相似文献

In order to estimate migration and gene flow, allele frequencies in populations at two sites separated by 120 m were differentially perturbed by the continuous release over 413 days of flies homozygous at particular allozyme loci. The effects of perturbation were determined by genotype assay at two collections prior to, thirteen during and nine after the perturbation period. Maximum likelihood methods were developed to estimate migration into the two populations from the homozygous releases, and migration between the two populations. The successful perturbation of allele frequencies in a natural population is demonstrated. A plateau in allele frequencies during perturbation and a return to original frequencies following cessation of perturbation was most likely due to selection during development against recessive alleles concurrently introduced into the populations by the released flies. There is unequivocal evidence for short distance gene flow between the two populations. The migration rates estimated at ten times over a nine month period were extremely variable, but with higher population density at one site positively related with migration from that site to the other.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Spotted hyaena Crocuta crocuta whoops are loud calls normally produced in a sequence termed a bout. Whoops are produced by hyaenas irrespective of age or sex to display identity and convey information about the location of the caller. The majority (91%, n=460) of whoops produced by spotted hyaenas, from two geographically separate populations in southern Africa and one population in eastern Africa, showed pronounced nonlinear phenomena, predominantly subharmonics. Whoops produced by males and females had a similarly high probability of sub- harmonics, and 91.5% of the 78 bouts examined contained calls with subharmonics. These results provide evidence that nonlinear vocal phenomena are a common feature of hyaena whoops. The presence of subharmonics in whoops may be enhanced by vocal tract resonances when the fundamental frequency and first formant in the calls are close or coincide. Vocal membranes may also play a role. The high incidence of subharmonics in whoops may enhance individual recognition by adding structural complexity to calls. As 33 of 34 individually known spotted hyaenas examined in this study produced whoops containing subharmonics, it is unlikely that the production of subharmonics is confined to calls from individuals of a particular social status, sex, size, or level of developmental asymmetry, as proposed for nonlinear phenomena in the calls of other mammalian species, although variation in structural features of subharmonics may convey information about these characteristics.  相似文献

Several papers dealing with carrot cell cultures describe meiosis-likedivisions and haploid cells prior to somatic embryogenesis.We have studied the first division in embryogenic mesophyllcells of a diploidCichorium intybus L. and of a tetraploid hybridC.intybus L.xC. endivia L. which undergo direct somatic embryogenesisfrom single cells when leaf fragments are placed in a liquidagitated inductive medium (modified MS with 1x10-7M NAA and2.5x10-6M 2-iP), in darkness, at 35°C. MicrosporogenesisinC. intybus provided aspects of meiosis for comparison. Inleaves incubated in inductive conditions, DAPI staining of nucleishowed normal mitosis on days 3–6; about 0.6% cells inprophase had undergone spontaneous endoreduplication leadingto a tetraploid somatic embryo. Immunocytochemistry of tubulinrevealed the constant presence of a preprophase band, as ina normal mitosis. The first pluricellular somatic embryos becamevisible on day 5 of culture. Flow cytometric determination ofnuclear DNA on days 4, 5 and 6 did not show any peak correspondingto the 1C DNA level for the diploid plant or to the 2C DNA levelfor the tetraploid. Instead there was a weak but constant peakat the 4C and 8C levels. We conclude that inCichorium leaves,the first division of somatic embryogenesis is a normal mitosis,with a small shift to endoreduplication. Over a 1-year period, twenty controlled experiments were performed using small mesocosms (20-l clear plastic carboys) and plankton communities collected from four sites in shallow, subtropical Lake Okeechobee, Florida. In replicated treatments, macrozooplankton grazers were excluded by size fractionation (115 μm), and/or nutrients (N and P) were added, and impacts on phytoplankton biomass and productivity were measured after 3-day incubations.
2. In most experiments (fifteen out of twenty), there was no significant effect of zooplankton exclusion on phytoplankton biomass or productivity, but there were significant increases in those attributes due to nutrient additions. The magnitude of the responses was a function of light availability at the collection sites.
3. In three experiments, zooplankton exclusion led to declines in phytoplankton biomass and productivity, suggesting that animals may sometimes have net positive effects on the phytoplankton, perhaps via nutrient recycling.
4. In only two experiments was there evidence of net negative impacts of grazers on the phytoplankton. In both instances, cladocerans ( Daphnia ambigua and Eubosmina tubicen ) were dominant in the zooplankton. However, the increases in chlorophyll a due to zooplankton exclusion were small (5–20%), probably because of the small size and relatively low grazing rates of the cladocerans.
5. The results support the hypothesis that phytoplankton biomass in Lake Okeechobee is little affected by herbivorous macrozooplankton. This may be a common feature of lowland tropical and subtropical lakes.  相似文献

Removal of nestboxes from a semi-mature, broadleaved woodland caused a decrease in the number of breeding pairs of Great Tits, but did not significantly reduce breeding densities of Blue Tits. Breeding densities of warblers were unaffected by changes in the population of Great Tits. In the absence of nestboxes, intraspecific competition for natural nestholes was more intense amongst Great Tits than Blue Tits. Great Tits tended to occupy larger holes on or near the trunk, while Blue Tits used smaller holes on side branches. Nesting success for both species was lower in natural cavities than nestboxes, due to a higher percentage of total nest failures. The reintroduction of nestboxes did not produce an immediate rise in the breeding population of Great Tits; possible reasons for this are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. The incorporation of soybean trypsin inhibitor (SBTI) into the diet of the buffalo fly, Haematobia irritans exigua (De Meijere), results in increased mortality and reduced fecundity. A trypsin-like enzyme which binds to SBTI was isolated by affinity chromatography on a Sepharose-SBTI column followed by ion-exchange chromatography. The enzyme was inhibited by benzamidine, phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride, ovomucoid, leupeptin and a-2 macroglobulin. The enzyme was not inhibited by EDTA or p-chloromecuribenzoic acid and had a broad pH optimum of pH 7–9. Vaccination of sheep produced antibodies specific for the trypsin-like enzyme which inhibited enzyme activity in vitro but did not affect the survival of flies maintained in in vitro culture.  相似文献
