Since the discovery of X-rays, medical imaging has played a major role in the guidance of surgical procedures. While medical imaging began with simple X-ray plates to indicate the presence of foreign objects within the human body, the advent of the computer has been a major factor in the recent development of this field. Imaging techniques have grown greatly in their sophistication and can now provide the surgeon with high quality three-dimensional images depicting not only the normal anatomy and pathology, but also vascularity and function. One key factor in the advances in Image-Guided Surgery (IGS) is the ability not only to register images derived from the various imaging modalities amongst themselves, but also to register them to the patient. The other crucial aspect of IGS is the ability to track instruments in real time during the procedure, and to portray them as part of a realistic model of the operative volume. Stereoscopic and virtual-reality techniques can usefully enhance the visualization process. IGS nevertheless relies heavily on the assumption that the images acquired prior to surgery, and upon which the surgical guidance is based, accurately represent the morphology of the tissue during the surgical procedure. In many instances this assumption is invalid, and intra-operative real-time imaging, using interventional MRI, Ultrasound, and electrophysiological recordings are often employed to overcome this limitation. Although now in extensive clinical use, IGS is often currently perceived as an intrusion into the operating room. It must evolve towards becoming a routine surgical tool, but this will only happen if natural and intuitive human interfaces are developed for these systems.  相似文献

The opportunity for commercial production of Agave in Australia stems from the substantial carbohydrate and fibre content of Agave, the nature of carbohydrates stored, the pre‐existence of an Agave ethanol‐producing industry in Mexico, demand for biofuel feedstocks, impressive water‐use efficiencies of plants with the CAM pathway, and legislation mandating the ethanol content of fuel in Australia, where an estimated 748 ML will be required for blending with petrol by 2010–2011, compared with about 440 ML in 2009. Agave has potential as a crop for areas of seasonally limited rainfall in Australia, a judgement based upon desktop analyses and agronomic experience of growing Agave in Australia before 1915. Development of a viable Australian Agave farming system requires production be located in suitable regions, efficient propagation methods, mechanized production, and viable business plans at grower, processor and marketing levels. Growers and processors agree that Agave will not be grown commercially until plants are grown, maintained and harvested in Australia, product is produced and tested, and yield and risks are evaluated. To this end, Agave were imported into Australia from Mexico and a tissue culture propagation technique developed. A trial crop of Agave tequilana was planted in northern Queensland and CO2 exchange, nitrogen and water dynamics, carbohydrate content, and system inputs and outputs are being monitored. The experience will be used to fine‐tune the farming system, assess production costs and develop robust life‐cycle assessments. Processing of plants from trials will test harvesting and transport infrastructure and will provide material to processors for testing. Samples will be provided to potential producers of value‐added products. An Australian Agave industry should provide opportunities for stimulating agronomic, scientific and commercial exchange between Australia and Mexico. Successful integration of Agave into Australian agriculture will require a biofuels‐focussed breeding programme in collaboration with Mexican researchers.  相似文献

We briefly review the potential history of Madagascar as either a Darwinian or a Wallacean island, summarize the phylogenetic evidence regarding the biogeography of Madagascar spiders, examine the dispersal history of the Madagascar Phyxelididae, and monograph the family in Madagascar. Molecular phylogenetic analyses for 32 Malagasy phyxelidid exemplars, nine confamilial outgroup taxa, and seven other more distant outgroups are performed for three nuclear markers and one mitochondrial genetic marker (28S, 18S, H3 and COI) utilizing Bayesian, maximum‐likelihood and parsimony methods. These analyses suggest that there are 14 species of Phyxelididae that may be recognized from Madagascar, that these may be divided into three genera, and that the Malagasy phyxelidids form a monophyletic group, probably resulting from a single invasion of the island by an ancestor from Africa. Two new genera, ten new species, and two new combinations are proposed: Manampoka atsimo gen. nov., sp. nov. ; Rahavavy gen. nov. , including R. ida sp. nov. and R. fanivelona (Griswold, 1990) comb. nov. and R. malagasyana (Griswold, 1990) comb. nov. ; and Ambohima andrefana sp. nov. , A. antsinanana sp. nov. , A. avaratra sp. nov. , A. maizina sp. nov. , A. ranohira sp. nov. , A. vato sp. nov. , A. zandry sp. nov. and A. zoky sp. nov. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 164 , 728–810.  相似文献

1. To manage the environmental flow requirements of sedentary taxa, such as mussels and aquatic insects with fixed retreats, we need a measure of habitat availability over a variety of flows (i.e. a measure of persistent habitat). Habitat suitability measures in current environmental flow assessments are measured on a ‘flow by flow’ basis and thus are not appropriate for these taxa. Here, we present a novel measure of persistent habitat suitability for the dwarf wedgemussel (Alasmidonta heterodon), listed as federally endangered in the U.S.A., in three reaches of the Delaware River. 2. We used a two‐dimensional hydrodynamic model to quantify suitable habitat over a range of flows based on modelled depth, velocity, Froude number, shear velocity and shear stress at three scales (individual mussel, mussel bed and reach). Baseline potentially persistent habitat was quantified as the sum of pixels that met all thresholds identified for these variables for flows ≥40 m3 s?1, and we calculated the loss of persistently suitable habitat by sequentially summing suitable habitat estimates at lower flows. We estimated the proportion of mussel beds exposed at each flow and the amount of change in the size of the mussel bed for one reach. 3. For two reaches, mussel beds occupied areas with lower velocity, shear velocity, shear stress and Froude number than the reach average at all flows. In the third reach, this was true only at higher flows. Together, these results indicate that beds were possible refuge areas from the effects of these hydrological parameters. Two reaches showed an increase in the amount of exposed mussel beds with decreasing flow. 4. Baseline potentially persistent habitat was less than half the areal extent of potentially suitable habitat, and it decreased with decreasing flow. Actually identified beds and modelled persistent habitat showed good spatial overlap, but identified beds occupied only a portion of the total modelled persistent habitat, indicating either that additional suitable habitat is available or the need to improve habitat criteria. At one site, persistent beds (beds where mussels were routinely collected) were located at sites with stable substratum, whereas marginal beds (beds where mussels were infrequently collected or that were lost following a large flood event) were located in scoured areas. 5. Taken together, these model results support a multifaceted approach, which incorporates the effects of low and high flow stressors, to quantify habitat suitability for mussels and other sedentary taxa. Models of persistent habitat can provide a more holistic environmental flow assessment of rivers.  相似文献

Ten tetranucleotide, dinucleotide and compound microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized for the round goby, Neogobius melanostomus. Analysis of 64 gobies from one nonindigenous population in Lake Erie, Ontario, Canada, indicated that allele number varied from three to 12 per locus, while observed heterozygosity ranged between 0.33 and 0.86. Eight of these primers showed some amplification in other species in four genera. These newly developed microsatellite markers are a powerful tool that will provide insights into population structure and dispersal of the round goby in their novel environment.  相似文献

Abstract The germination of Sorghum bicolor seeds of 9 genotypes was tested at temperatures between 8°C and 48°C on a thermal gradient plate. Samples were tested from three regions of the panicle expected to differ in temperature during grain filling. Seeds of a tenth genotype, SPV 354, produced in controlled-environment glasshouses at different panicle temperatures, were tested similarly. In addition, the emergence of SPV 354 was measured from planting depths of 2 and 5 cm at mean soil temperatures of 15, 20 and 25°C. Four methods of calculating mean germination rate for the nine genotypes were compared. Germination characters like base, optimum and maximum temperature (Tb, To, Tm), thermal time (θ)and the germination rate at To(Rmax showed only small differences between methods. There was a range of genotypic variation in all characters: Tb 8.5–11.9°C; To, 33.2–37.5°C; Tm, 46.8–49.2°C; θ, 23.4–38.0°Cd; Rmax, 0.69–1.14-d-1. In contrast, mean germinability (G) was between 90% and 100% over the temperature range 13–40°C. Panicle temperature had no effect on any germination character in SPV 354. However, deeper burial increased θ for emergence and decreased G, irrespective of soil temperature except at 5 cm. Increasing panicle temperature, by reducing seed size, reduced G and increased θ by about 10% only at 15°C and 5 cm depth.  相似文献

Effect of Methyl Methanesulphonate on Synchronized Cultures of HEp-2 Cells   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
ASYNCHRONOUS cultures of human cells treated with the mono-functional alkylating agent methyl methanesulphonate (MMS) seem to undergo a DNA repair process1 although the rate of cell proliferation is greatly reduced2. To learn more about the relation between DNA synthesis and cellular division in cells with damaged template DNA we have examined the effects of MMS on synchronized cultures of HEp-2 cells treated approximately half way through the G1 phase of the cell cycle. The use of synchronized cultures makes it possible to determine whether the observed reduction in cell proliferation results from inability of the cells to go through an S phase or from their inability to divide and enter a second S phase.  相似文献

Ethylene Production by Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) Callus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Tobacco callus cultures grown on defined agar-solidified media produced ethylene in differing amounts, which were related to cultural treatment and age of the callus. There was a close correlation between the rate of ethylene production and growth. In darkness, maximal rates occurred in the third week of growth with ethylene production in the range of 750 nl (callus piece)?1 d?1 (fr. wt. = 1.5 g), and in the light, maximal rates occurred in the first week of growth, 200 nl (callus piece)?1 d?1 (fr. wt. = 200 mg). Growth was also correlated with ethylene production when the latter was altered by exposure of the callus to inhibitors of ethylene synthesis, L-canaline, benzyl isothiocyanate, and 3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxy-benzoic acid. No correlation was found following treatment with AgNO3, a presumptive inhibitor of ethylene action. The inhibition of growth and ethylene production by L-canaline was partially reversed by gassing the cultures with ethylene (1 μl/1). A mercuric perchlorate sink had no significant effect on growth. A possible relationship between ethylene evolution and growth is discussed.  相似文献
