Phylogeny and classification of Marantaceae   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Relationships of Marantaceae were estimated from nucleotide sequence variation in the rps16 intron (plastid DNA) and from morphological characters. Fifty-nine species (21 genera) formed the ingroup, and 12 species (12 genera) of other Zingiberales formed the outgroup. There is no support for the traditional subdivision of Marantaceae into a triovulate and a uniovulate tribe or the informal groups previously proposed. The so-called Donax group forms a paraphyletic grade that is basal within Marantaceae. Thalia appears as the distal branch of this grade, but its position is not supported in jackknife analysis. The so-called Calathea group is monophyletic in all shortest trees but not supported with greater than 50% jackknife. The genus Calathea appears to be paraphyletic. The Maranta and Phrynium groups are clearly polyphyletic. Maranta, Koernickanthe , and genera of the Mymsma group, all neotropical, form a strongly supported monophyletic group. The sister of this group is the palaeotropical genus Halopegia. Koernickanthe is nested within Maranta , as this genus is traditionally circumscribed. The African genera Ataenidia and Marantochloa form a strongly supported clade in which Ataenidia is the sister group to Marantochloa . Based on phylogeny it is concluded that Africa, in spite of being much poorer in species, is the most likely ancestral area of Marantaceae  相似文献

The evolution of greater male than female parental care remains poorly understood. In birds it is thought to be related to precocial chicks and small clutch size. This review shows, however, that such role reversal has also evolved in a family with altricial young and relatively large clutch size: coucals (Centropodidae, Cuculiformes). Males perform most nest building, incubation, and feeding of young. As predicted by sexual selection theory, coucals have also reversed sexual size dimorphism, females being larger than males in all 12 species for which size data are available. Most coucals that have been studied are monogamous, but the black coucal Centropus grillii appears to be polyandrous, and males perform almost all parental care, whereas females show more active advertisement behaviour. In this species, females are about 50% heavier than males. Polyandry in the black coucal seems to be associated with a shift to a habitat with seasonally rich food resources. Difficulties for female coucals of gathering enough resources for producing several clutches of relatively large eggs may favour mainly male parental care. Female sexual competition and resource storage, and male foraging economy, may explain why females are larger. Additional field studies are needed to test these hypotheses; the coucals are of great interest to sexual selection and mating systems theory.  相似文献

The Swedish moose was analysed for genetic variability at major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and class II DQA, DQB and DRB loci using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) techniques. Both methods revealed limited amounts of polymorphism. Since the SSCP analysis concerned an expressed DRB gene it can be concluded that the level of functional MHC class II polymorphism, at least at the DRB locus, is low in Swedish moose. DNA fingerprinting was used to determine if the unusual pattern of low MHC variability could be explained by a low degree of genome-wide genetic diversity. Hybridizations with two minisatellite probes gave similarity indices somewhat higher than the average for other natural population, but the data suggest that the low MHC variability cannot be explained by a recent population bottleneck. However, since minisatellite sequences evolve more rapidly than MHC sequences, the low levels of MHC diversity may be attributed to a bottleneck of more ancient origin. The selection pressure for MHC variability in moose may also be reduced and we discuss the possibility that its solitary life style may reduce lateral transmission of pathogens in the population.  相似文献

Class I genes of the bovine major histocompatibility complex (MHC) were investigated by Southern blot hybridization and by serological analysis. A large number of class I restriction fragments and an extensive polymorphism were revealed when genomic DNA samples, digested with the restriction enzyme PvuII, were hybridized with a human cDNA probe. The result indicated the presence of multiple class I genes in cattle. The extensive restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) was interpreted genetically by analysing five paternal half-sib families comprising, besides the bulls, 50 offspring and their dams. No less than 21 RFLP types were distinguished in this limited sample. The class I polymorphism was also analysed using a serological test with sera corresponding to four workshop specificities (w2, w6, w10 and w16) and three locally defined specificities (SRB1, SRB2 and SRB3). There was an excellent agreement between the two typing methods since no RFLP type was associated with more than one specificity and five of the seven specificities were associated with a single RFLP type. Evidence for close genetic linkage between class I and DQ class II genes was obtained since no recombinant was found among 45 informative offspring. Linkage disequilibrium among class I, DQ class II and C4 genes was also observed. The blood group specificity M' was completely associated with the w16 class I specificity and with the haplotype I1DQ1BC4(2) in this material.  相似文献

The genetic diversity in the first domain exon of a bovine class II DRB gene was investigated by PCR amplification and DNA sequencing. Genomic DNA samples representing 14 different class II haplotypes, defined by RFLP analysis, were used. The analysis revealed an extensive polymorphism and 14 alleles at a single locus, designated DRB3, were identified. Multiple amino acid substitutions were found in all pairwise comparisons of alleles; 5 to 21 substitutions in the 83 positions compared. The genetic diversity at the amino acid level found in cattle matches the one previously found in the DRB1 locus in man. The significantly higher frequency of replacement substitutions compared with the frequency of silent substitutions provides strong evidence that there is selection for genetic diversity in the bovine DRB3 first domain exon. A comparison of the DRB polymorphism in man and cattle reveals a striking similarity as regards the location of polymorphic positions in the DRB molecule and the degree of polymorphism at polymorphic positions. The majority of polymorphic positions in both species are found in the proposed antigen recognition site of the class II molecule. In addition, there are eight positions which are polymorphic in both species but have not been assigned to the antigen recognition site. The possible functional significance of the polymorphism of these latter positions is discussed.  相似文献

The plumage coloration in great tits (Parus major) is the subject of much behavioural and ecophysiological research, yet there is a lack of analyses of the natural colour variation and its mechanisms. We used reflectance spectrometry and high‐performance liquid chromatography to explore individual, sexual and age‐related variation in carotenoid coloration and pigmentation, paramount to the often presumed, but rarely substantiated, costs and ‘honesty’ of carotenoid displays. In adults, we found that sex was the strongest predictor of ‘brightness’ (higher in males) and of ‘hue’ (longer wavelength in females). There was no sex difference in ‘carotenoid chroma’ or carotenoid content of feathers which also was unrelated to adult age (1 or 2+ years) and condition. Similar patterns were revealed for nestlings. Regarding the biochemical ‘signal content’, ‘carotenoid chroma’, but not ‘hue’, was significantly related to the carotenoid content (lutein and zeaxanthin) of feathers. These results refute the previously assumed exaggeration of carotenoid pigmentation in male great tits, and question the condition‐dependence of carotenoid coloration in this species. Production of successive clutches within the same breeding season has received less attention than many other aspects of avian reproduction. Waders are of particular interest because in these birds, multiple clutches are associated with at least three different breeding systems: double-clutching (uniparental care), monogamous double-brooding (biparental care) and polyandry (uni- or biparental care). Data from eight species and twelve breeding populations suggest that early second clutches, and thus brood overlap, are associated with parental role division and uniparental care, whereas species or populations with biparental care tend to have long intervals between successive clutches. We suggest that ecological factors influencing the relative timing of the second clutch will have consequences for the parental care system. In particular, conditions that favour early laying of the second clutch (large brood overlap) are likely to lead to parental role division, as found in double-clutching species. Factors determining the timing of second clutches are discussed, as are possibilities for testing these ideas.  相似文献

Recent studies of blue tits, Parus caeruleus , have found sexual selection and a viability-indicating function of the structural ultraviolet and blue crown plumage, but the reasons for this signal variation are not understood. Furthermore, studies in England and Sweden have yielded somewhat different results (particularly with regard to the spectral position of the reflectance peak). Here we investigate whether the blue tit UV/blue ornament varies with time of year since such variation might be relevant to the signalling function as well as the apparent difference between populations. From 400 blue tits captured at two different localities in Sweden, we found that objective measures of 'hue' (spectral location), 'chroma' (spectral purity) and 'brightness' (spectral intensity), varied substantially with season. Just after moult (October), crown 'hue' is maximally UV-shifted (359 nm for males and 373 nm for females). Thereafter the peak drifts upwards and by the time of nestling feeding (June) male reflectance peaks at 404 nm and female at 413 nm. This change is probably due to feather wear as well as fat and dirt accumulation, which might constitute an additional male quality cue. Our results suggest that it is important to consider plumage age when exploring variation in structural plumage coloration, and that it can largely explain the difference between the British and Swedish studies. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 76 , 237–245.  相似文献

  • 1 Lake Tåkern and Lake Krankesjön, two moderately eutrophic, shallow lakes in southern Sweden, have during the past few decades shifted several times between a clear-water state with abundant submerged vegetation and a turbid state with high phytoplankton densities.
  • 2 Between 1985 and 1991, Lake Takern was in a clear state, whereas Lake Krankesjon shifted from a turbid to a clear state. During this shift, the area covered by submerged macrophytes expanded, followed by an increase in water transparency, plant-associated macroinvertebrates, and piscivorous fish. Nutrient concentrations, phytoplankton biomass and abundance of planktonic cladocerans decreased.
  • 3 In both lakes, water level fluctuations were the most common factor causing shifts, affecting submerged macrophytes either through changes in light availability or through catastrophic events such as dry-out or mechanical damage by ice movement.
  • 4 Our data give further support for the existence of two alternative stable states in shallow lakes maintained by self-stabilizing feedback mechanisms.
