Sea‐level rise will alter the hydrology of terrestrial coastal ecosystems. As such, it becomes increasingly important to decipher the present role of ocean water in coastal ecosystems in order to assess the coming effects of sea‐level rise scenarios. Sand dunes occur at the interface of land and sea. Traditionally, they are conceived as freshwater environments with rain and ground water as the only water sources available to vegetation. This study investigates the possibility of ocean water influx to dune soils and its effect on the physiology of sand dune vegetation. Stable isotopes are used to trace the path of ocean water from the soil to the vegetation. Soil salinity, water content and δ18O values are measured concurrently with stem water and leaf tissue of eight species during the wet and dry season and from areas proximal and distal to the ocean. Our results indicate the dune ecosystem is a mixed freshwater and marine water system characterized by oceanic influence on dune hydrology that is spatially heterogeneous and fluctuates temporally. Ocean water influx to soil occurs via salt spray in areas 5–12 m from the ocean during dry season. Accordingly, vegetation nearest to the sea demonstrate a plastic response to ocean water deposition including elevated integrated water use efficiency (δ13Cleaf) and uptake of ocean water that comprised up to 52% of xylem water. We suggest physiological plasticity in response to periodic ocean water influx may be a functional characteristic common to species on the leading edge of diverse coastal habitats and an important feature that should be included in modeling coastal ecosystems. Rising sea level would likely cause a repercussive landward shift of dune species in response to encroaching maritime influences. However, human development would restrict this process, potentially causing the demise of dune systems and the protection from land erosion they provide.  相似文献

Abstract Environmental relationships were investigated among three species of the Anopheles gambiae complex of mosquitoes associated with the geothermal springs located in Bwamba County, Uganda. The degree of ecological isolation between An.gambiae and An. bwambae, a sibling species known only from the geothermal springs environment, was assessed on the basis of adult distribution and abundance as well as differences in larval habitats. Field data were gathered during June 1995 without knowing which of the species were being collected. Specimens identified subsequently by rDNA-PCR were used to interpret the ecological data. Ten of twenty aquatic sites sampled were found positive for immature stages of the An.gambiae complex. Larvae of An.bwambae were associated with ‘springwater’ habitats having much higher conductivity, much greater concentrations of dissolved solids and slightly higher temperature and pH than ‘normal’ fresh water sites inhabited by larvae of An.gambiae. Larval habitats of both species were unshaded: An.bwambae occurred among dense sedge (Cyperus laevigatus) whereas those of An.gambiae were almost devoid of vegetation. One mixed sample showed that larvae of both species occur together in peripheral aquatic sites with intermediate physical and ecological characteristics. In water preference tests, free-flying females were reluctant to lay eggs on bowls of water in cages; gravid females (with one wing amputated) placed on the surface of water in a cup laid eggs on seasoned rainwater (12/51 An.bwambae; 2/3 An.gambiae) as well as spring-water (39/51 An.bwambae; 1/3 An.gambiae). All three An.gambiae oviposited on the first water option, whereas 86% of An. bwambae witheld oviposition until being moved to the other type of water after 5–6 h, and 82% (36/44) of these laid eggs on geothermal water in preference to rainwater. Larval and adult collections showed that An.gambiae occurs sympatrically with An.bwambae throughout its range in the humid foothill environment of the geothermal springs, whereas the distribution of An.arabiensis overlaps only slightly with An.bwambae towards the savanna environment north of the springs.  相似文献

Abstract The hypothesis that economic damage due to nonpoint pollution exceeds costs of mitigation can be tested by ecologists, economists, and resource managers working at the spatial scale of watersheds for periods of years to decades. We present a framework for combining ecological and economic information to compare management scenarios for nonpoint pollution. Eutrophication of lakes caused by nonpoint phosphorus pollution, a common environmental problem, is the focus of our approach. Economic advantages of mitigating nonpoint pollution increase as the uncertainty of ecological predictions decreases. Uncertainty is measured by the prediction variance of nonpoint pollution models. A major source of variance in nonpoint pollution predictions is the effect of land use change on phosphorus transport. This variance is often large because calibration data sets do not have sufficiently wide ranges of land use variables. Ecological predictions and the resulting economic assessments could be improved by comparative studies of watersheds with contrasting land uses, and by viewing nonpoint pollution management as a large-scale experiment.  相似文献

The Ca2+ sensor calmodulin (CaM) regulates numerous proteins involved in G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling. CaM binds directly to some GPCRs, including the dopamine D2 receptor. We confirmed that the third intracellular loop of the D2 receptor is a direct contact point for CaM binding using coimmunoprecipitation and a polyHis pull-down assay, and we determined that the D2-like receptor agonist 7-OH-DPAT increased the colocalization of the D2 receptor and endogenous CaM in both 293 cells and in primary neostriatal cultures. The N-terminal three or four residues of D2-IC3 were required for the binding of CaM; mutation of three of these residues in the full-length receptor (I210C/K211C/I212C) decreased the coprecipitation of the D2 receptor and CaM and also significantly decreased D2 receptor signaling, without altering the coupling of the receptor to G proteins. Taken together, these findings suggest that binding of CaM to the dopamine D2 receptor enhances D2 receptor signaling.  相似文献

Abstract. Juvenile Hormone III bisepoxide synthesis by ring gland complexes from third-instar larvae of the blowfly Lucilia cuprina Weidemann (Diptera, Calliphoridae) was measured using a radiochemical assay in vitro. Hormone synthesis is regulated by three distinct mechanisms during development of the final larval instar up to the time of pupariation. The first type of regulation is detected as a rapid decline in hormone release coinciding with the final phase of commitment to pupariation. The second is a neurally mediated inhibition by the brain that acts at all stages of development in third-instar larvae. A protease-sensitive factor from brains of third-instar larvae causes dose-dependent reversible inhibition of Juvenile Hormone III bisepoxide synthesis. The third regulatory signal is a neural inhibition, observed in brain-ring gland complexes of prepupal stages. The first two levels of regulation appear to act early in the synthetic pathway for Juvenile Hormone (JH), whereas the third acts on the final steps of bisepoxide synthesis.  相似文献

We examined object permanence in black‐and‐white‐ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata) at Zoo Atlanta. A series of visible and invisible displacement tasks with suitable controls were presented to five adult subjects. Subjects performed significantly above chance on all regular tasks, except for the double invisible displacements. Subjects failed visible and invisible controls. Failure on the control trials did not appear to be because subjects used the “last box touched” strategy (subjects did not choose the last box touched significantly more than expected by chance). However, a substantial percentage of choices was made to the last box touched by the experimenter. There was no significant difference between this percentage, and the percentage of choices made to the baited box (on both visible and invisible controls), which indicates that subjects were drawn to both boxes which the experimenter visited/touched, and thus failed the controls. Based on the results from the present study, we believe that there is no evidence that black‐and‐white ruffed lemurs understand visible and invisible tasks in the traditional object permanence battery.
