1. Environmental flows is now a widely accepted term that covers the quantity, timing, duration, frequency and quality of water flows required to sustain freshwater, estuarine and near-shore ecosystems and the human livelihoods and well-being that depend on them.
2. The Water Framework Directive (WFD) of the European Union does not use the term environmental flows explicitly, but requires member states to achieve good ecological status (GES) in all waterbodies, which is assessed by reference to aquatic biology. Nevertheless, it is accepted that ecologically appropriate hydrological regimes are necessary to meet this status. Implementing environmental flows will be a key measure for restoring and managing river ecosystems.
3. The WFD explicitly requires stakeholder involvement, but this has been interpreted as largely a dissemination exercise by national government agencies. Stakeholders are no longer involved in negotiation over ecological objectives as these are pre-set in the WFD. However, stakeholders may be more involved in reviewing standards and agreeing to measures to restore river ecosystems to the status required by the WFD.
4. The U.K. has undertaken two major projects to set environmental standards for water resources (i) to define water abstraction limits that maintain a healthy river ecosystem and (ii) to define ecologically appropriate flow releases from reservoirs.
5. Implementation of environmental flows remains a major issue, but new ideas such as time-limited licences and licence trading are being tried.  相似文献

Photosynthetic carbon gain in plants using the C3 photosynthetic pathway is substantially inhibited by photorespiration in warm environments, particularly in atmospheres with low CO2 concentrations. Unlike C4 plants, C3 plants are thought to lack any mechanism to compensate for the loss of photosynthetic productivity caused by photorespiration. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate that the C3 plants rice and wheat employ a specific mechanism to trap and reassimilate photorespired CO2. A continuous layer of chloroplasts covering the portion of the mesophyll cell periphery that is exposed to the intercellular air space creates a diffusion barrier for CO2 exiting the cell. This facilitates the capture and reassimilation of photorespired CO2 in the chloroplast stroma. In both species, 24–38% of photorespired and respired CO2 were reassimilated within the cell, thereby boosting photosynthesis by 8–11% at ambient atmospheric CO2 concentration and 17–33% at a CO2 concentration of 200 µmol mol?1. Widespread use of this mechanism in tropical and subtropical C3 plants could explain why the diversity of the world's C3 flora, and dominance of terrestrial net primary productivity, was maintained during the Pleistocene, when atmospheric CO2 concentrations fell below 200 µmol mol?1.  相似文献

Human activities and climate change have greatly altered flooding regimes in many of the world's river deltas, but the impact of such changes remains poorly quantified on decadal to multidecadal timescales. This study identified the response of delta lake primary production (measured as the concentration of sedimentary pigments) to variations in flood frequency using spatial surveys and paleolimnological analyses of lakes in the Peace‐Athabasca Delta (PAD), Canada. Surveys of 61 lakes spanning a range of hydrological conditions showed that those lakes that received flood waters less frequently were associated with elevated algal production (surface sedimentary pigments) and, in some lakes, increased growth of emergent macrophytes and epiphytic diatoms. Paleolimnological analyses of five lakes corroborated the contemporary spatial survey results by showing that production of pigments from most algal groups increased during recent periods of lower flood frequency in the 20th century as determined from increases in cellulose‐inferred lake‐water oxygen isotope composition and plant macrofossils, but remained stable in a ‘reference’ basin. In general, past periods of elevated algal production coincided with the increased abundance of submerged macrophytes or emergent vegetation that provide habitat for attached algae. These results suggest that interdecadal declines in river discharge arising from increased aridity, hydrologic regulation or consumptive water use will cause long‐term increases in primary production and alter ecosystem processes (carbon sequestration, biological diversity) in aquatic delta ecosystems similar to the PAD where lakes become nutrient‐rich in the absence of flooding.  相似文献

Kiwifruit vines are perennial plants grown in climates varying from maritime to continental. To determine key responses to temperature, vines were heated at different stages of fruit development, and vine growth and fruit composition examined. Heating vines during fruit starch accumulation caused a major shift in partitioning towards vegetative growth and dramatically reduced fruit carbohydrate and vitamin C. In the following season, growth and flowering were severely reduced. Heating vines during fruit cell division had minimal long‐term effects, whereas heating during fruit maturation delayed starch degradation and fruit ripening and affected growth in the following season. When vines were removed from heat, fruit dry matter, starch and sugar levels were always reduced but hexose : sucrose ratios and inositol were raised. Heating vines affected expression of two sucrose synthase genes, but this did not correlate with reduction in fruit carbohydrate. Activity and expression of l ‐galactose dehydrogenase decreased as fruit developed, suggesting some vitamin C biosynthesis must take place in the fruit. Activity and expression of actinidin increased in response to heat. The results of this study have demonstrated both short and long‐term plant responses to elevated temperatures in woody perennials, and that the timing of heat exposure has severe consequences for vitamin C levels in fruit.  相似文献

Nodulated alder plants grow vigorously in water culture withoutcombined nitrogen. Evidence is advanced to show that the fixationof atmospheric nitrogen thus implied occurs actually withinthe nodulated plant and probably in the nodule. Nodule formation occurred most freely over the pH range 5•4to 7•0, while subsequent to nodulation the best growthof plants was in the pH range 4•2 to 5•4. The capacityof the host plant to tolerate relatively low pH levels considerablyexceeds that of the nodule organism. The oxygen requirementof the nodules appears to be relatively high. The fixation ofnitrogen per unit dry weight of nodule tissue exceeds that oflegumes grown under comparable conditions.  相似文献
