In laboratory colonies of crowded migratory locusts Locusta migratoria (L.), homosexual behaviour (i.e. males mounting other males) is commonly observed. Female‐deprived males of Locusta migratoria migratorioides R. & F. mount each other in a characteristic mating position, often forming a group of several insects. When allatectomized males are placed together with intact, female‐deprived males, the former are usually mounted by the latter, demonstrating some degree of control involving the corpora allata over homosexual behaviour. This may be related to the positive effects of Juvenile Hormone (JH) or Juvenile Hormone analogues (JHAs) in enhancing male sexual behaviour, as is shown in some other insects. In the present study, a potent JHA (i.e. pyriproxyfen) is injected into a group of young, crowded L. m. migratorioides males, and an equivalent group of control males is maintained in a separate cage. Both groups are deprived of females. Three times a week, during 2‐h observation periods, JHA‐injected and control males are placed together in the absence of females, and homosexual mountings, per group and per individual, are recorded every 10 min. Observations are performed for 10 weeks. Analysis of these data, including the time spent in mounting behaviour, the percentage of individuals within a group involved in the behaviour during the observation periods and the identity of both partners, reveals that the JHA‐treated males show a more intense homosexual mating behaviour than control males in all quantified parameters. This is the first report of the enhancement of homosexual behaviour by an endocrine factor in insects.  相似文献

Leaves of the wilty pepper mutant, scabrous diminutive, accumulatemore Na+ than those of the normal genotype, when both grow inmedium containing N+. It seems that the regulation of Na+ fluxin the mutant root was modified. Net uptake of Na+ was muchhigher and efflux of 22Na+ was lower in the mutant roots thanin the normal ones. Two possible explanations for these differencesbetween mutant and normal plants are discussed, namely (a) achange in membrane permeability and (b) a change in the mechanismof Na+ extrusion.  相似文献

The wilty tomato mutant flacca and the normal variety RheinlandsRuhm were compared in terms of: (1) potassium transport intoand out of the guard cells, (2) cell wall properties which includeprotein, hydroxyproline and peroxidase activity, and (3) activityof indol-3yl-acetic acid oxidase. Also studied were the effectsof auxin on stomatal behaviour and peroxidase activity whenapplied to normal plants during development, and the short-termeffect of abscisic acid on the resistance of flacca stomatato closure under plasmolysis. Potassium transport, wall protein and hydroxyproline all seemedto be equal in mutant and normal plants. Peroxidase activitywas higher in the soluble and wall fractions of the mutant,and decreased toward normal in the mutant treated with abscisicacid. More stomata were open and peroxidase activity was higherin normal plants treated with auxin during development. Thepercentage of open stomata under plasmolysis was lower and theiraperture size was smaller in the epidermal strips taken fromabscisic-acid-treated mutant plants than from control mutantplants.  相似文献

Leaf explants of the cultivated tomato Lycopersicon esculentumcv. Rheinlands Rhum (RR) and the mutant flacca (flc), and thetwo wild species L. peruvianum (Lp) and Solanum pennellii (Sp)accession Atico were cultured on a modified Murashige and Skoog'smedium with various combinations of either kinetin (KN)+indol-3y1acetic acid (LAA), Kn+ naphthalene acetic acid or benzyladenine+IAA. The wild species Lp, was found to have the highest morphogeneticpotential as expressed by root and shoot formation in the variousmedia, as compared with the other species. The morphogeneticresponse of the second wild species, Sp varied in the differentmedia, being the poorest in the medium containing KN+LAA andbetter in the other media. The response of flc mutant, whichis distinguished by its hormonal imbalance, was not appreciablydifferent from that of the control normal plant, RR.  相似文献

The pitcher of the carnivorous plant Sarracenia purpurea L.contains an entrapped body of liquid within which its prey isdigested. Free calcium in the pitcher is derived from eitherthe pitcher walls or from prey falling into the pitcher; inthe absence of exogenous (prey-derived) calcium it will dependon the active and passive calcium regulatory properties of thepitcher walls and may to some extent therefore mimic calciumin the apoplast of plant cells. Using a calcium-specific electrode,the free calcium concentration of the pitchers of Sarraceniaplants was investigated and the effect of adding a variety ofconcentrations of calcium in water determined. The mean pitcherfree calcium concentration in vivo was 2.3 x 10–5 M±2.5x 10–5 M; when pitchers were washed and filled with watercontaining lower calcium concentrations, the concentration inthe pitcher water rose to 1–5 x 10–5 M. When highercalcium concentrations (up to 1 x 10–4 M) were added,the pitcher calcium concentration declined to 1–7 x 10–5M. Concentrations of calcium above 1 x 10–4 M were alsoreduced, but to a lesser extent. Metabolic inhibition of activeion transport, while inhibiting pitcher acidification, did notinhibit regulation of pitcher free calcium, suggested that itoccurs as a result of calcium exchange sites in the pitcherwalls. The data are discussed in relation to the physiologyof Sarracenia pitchers and to the usefulness of the pitcheras a model for free calcium in the higher plant apoplast.
