Hurricanes occur in belts 7° to 25° north and south of the equator. Reefs growing in these belts suffer periodic damage from hurricane-generated waves and storm surge. Corals down to 20m depth may be broken and removed, branching colonies being much more susceptible to breakage than upright massive forms. Sand cays may be washed away and former storm ridges may migrate to leeward across reef flats to link with islands. Reef crest and reef front coral debris accumulate as talus at the foot of the fore-reef slope, on submarine terraces and grooves, on the intertidal reef flat as storm ridges of shingle or boulders and isolated blocks of reef framework, as accreting beach ridges of leeward migrating shingle, as lobes and wedges of debris in back-reef lagoons, as drapes of carbonate sand and mud in deep off-reef locations in the fore-reef and lagoonal areas. In addition to the coarse debris deposited, other features may aid the recognition of former hurricane events, including the assemblage of reef biota, its species composition and the structure of the skeletons; graded internal sediments in framework cavities; characteristic sequences of encrusting organisms; characteristic shapes of reef flat microatoll corals; and submarine cement crusts over truncated reef surfaces. The abundance of reef flat storm deposits whose ages cluster around 3000–4000 y BP in certain parts of the world most likely relate to a slight fall in relative sea level rather than an increase in storminess during that period. A higher frequency of storms need not result in more reef flat storm deposits. The violence of the storm relative to normal fair-weather conditions influences the extent of damage; the length of time since the previous major storm influences the amount of coral debris created; the length of time after the hurricane, and before a subsequent storm influences the degree of stabilization of reef-top storm deposits and hence their chances of preservation.  相似文献

A cloche design is described that is suitable for elevating temperature to simulate global warming in polar ecosystems. This cloche system was used in a manipulation experiment near Ny Ålesund, Spitsbergen, Svalbard. An average warming of 2.8 deg. C. was produced over a 60 day growing season, well within the range predicted by present climate models. The elevation effect is shown to be consistent over the diel cycle and throughout the short arctic summer season. Several advantages over previous designs of manipulation unit are highlighted.  相似文献

Previous studies in our laboratory have suggested that an oxidation reaction is responsible for the actions of free radicals to decrease synaptic potentials. Recently we observed that free radicals both decreased depolarization-induced vesicular release and enhanced basal, nonvesicular release of the excitatory amino acid, [3H]L-glutamate. In order to evaluate the contribution of oxidative reactions to this latter effect, we evaluated the actions of the oxidizing agent chloramine-T on synaptosomal release of excitatory amino acids, using [3H]D-aspartate as the exogenous label. Basal and depolarization evoked [3H]D-aspartate release were calcium-independent and nonvesicular. Chloramine-T pretreatment significantly increased basal release, while having no effect on high K+-evoked release. These data suggest that an oxidative process can mimic the free radical increase of basal release, as well as the decrease in synaptic potentials. On the other hand, the calcium-independent-evoked release may involve a different mechanism. Our results demonstrate that under basal, nondepolarizing conditions, oxidative stress exerts an adverse effect on the presynaptic nerve terminal, resulting in an increased release of potentially damaging excitatory amino acid neurotransmitters.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetics of the enantiomers of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug pirprofen were studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats after oral and intravenous (iv) doses of the racemate. No significant differences were detected between the enantiomers after oral or iv dosing in t½, Vd, or ∑Xu. However, the R:S area under the plasma concentration (AUC) ratio after oral doses (0.92 ± 0.13) was slightly but significantly lower than after matching iv doses (1.05 ± 0.036). The absolute bioavailability of the active S-enantiomer (78.5%) after oral doses was higher than the inactive R-enantiomer (69.3%). The plasma protein binding of both enantiomers was saturable over a fivefold range of plasma concentrations. At higher plasma concentrations, the S-enantiomer was less bound than the R-enantiomer. In an in vitro experiment using everted rat jejunum, no chiral inversion was discernible. The dependency of the AUC ratio of the enantiomers on the route of administration may be due to stereoselective first-pass metabolism. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Seaweed extract, prepared by alkaline extraction of Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol., applied either to the soil or to the foliage of tomato plants, produced leaves with higher chlorophyll levels than those of control plants. The effects on leaf chlorophyll content were investigated using a cucumber bioassay procedure devised for cytokinins. The seaweed extract was shown to increase the chlorophyll levels of the cucumber cotyledons, but ‘peaks’ of activity were obtained when widely different concentrations were used. The possibility that these effects were the result of betaines present in the extract was considered. Glycinebetaine, γ-aminobutyric acid betaine and δ-aminovaleric acid betaine all produced significantly enhanced chlorophyll concentrations in the cotyledons. ‘Peaks’ of activity were observed for each betaine: for glycinebetaine at 10−6 and between 10−4 and 101 mg 1−1, for γ-aminobutyric acid betaine at 10−6, between 10−4 and 10−1, and 101 mg 1−1, and for δ-aminovaleric acid betaine between 10−5 and 101 mg 1−1. It was concluded that the effects of enhancing chlorophyll levels produced by the seaweed extract were due, at least in part, to betaines.  相似文献

Summary The present study investigates the effects of phenylsuccinate (PS), an inhibitor of the mitochondrial ketodicarboxylate carrier (KCC), on release of-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamate (Glu), glutamine (Gln), and glycine (Gly), induced by potassium chloride (KCl) and by cardiac arrest caused by a halothane overdose. Microdialysates were collected from the hippocampus of anaesthetized rats, and analyzed by HPLC. Continuous perfusion of 50 mM PS through the dialysis probe, reduces release of GABA induced by KCl (50 mM for 10 min through the dialysis probe) by up to 72%. In addition, PS abolished KCl-induced release of Glu. Release of GABA during cardiac arrest was not reduced by PS, whereas PS reduced release of Glu in the early stage of cardiac arrest. PS furthermore increased the basal level of Gln, and reversed a decrease of Gln induced by cardiac arrest.It is proposed that the KCC is present in GABA'ergic neurons of the rat hippocampus, and that GABA, released by KCl, can be synthesized in a KCC dependent manner. It is also suggested that ischemia-induced release of GABA, to some extent, has a non-transmitter origin. Summary 3-Fluorotyrosine fluorescence is quenched effectively by phosphate ions not only by a dynamic but also by a static mechanism owing to H-bond complex formation in ground state. 3-Fluorotyrosine pKa values both in the ground and first excited state (8.3 and 4, respectively) are appreciably lower than those of tyrosine, thus promoting 3-fluorotyrosinate ion formation in the excited state. Additional emission owing to 3-fluorotyrosinate ion (near 350 nm) may be taken erroneously for tryptophan fluorescence.  相似文献

The proteins KdpD and KdpE are crucial to the osmotic regulation of the kdpABC operon that is responsible for the high-affinity K+ ion transport system in Escherichia coli. We demonstrated previously that the response regulator, KdpE, is capable of undergoing Phosphorylation mediated by the sensory protein kinase, KdpD. In this study, we obtained biochemical evidence supporting the view that when KdpE is phosphorylated, it takes on an active form that exhibits relatively high affinity for the kdpABC promoter, which in turn results in activation of the kdpABC operon. It was also suggested that the central hydrophobic domain of KdpD, which is conceivably responsible for membrane anchoring of this protein, plays a role in the signalling mechanism underlying KdpE Phosphorylation in response to hyperosmotic stress.  相似文献
