'Classical nitroreductase' is an enzyme involved in the intracellular metabolic activation of mutagenic nitroarenes. The nitroreductase gene of Salmonella typhimurium TA1538 was cloned into pBR322 and the plasmids harboring the gene were introduced into TA98 and TA100. The resulting strains (YG1021 and YG1026) had more than 50 times higher nitrofurazone-reductase activity than TA1538 containing pBR322, and were extremely sensitive to the mutagenic action of 2-nitrofluorene, 1-nitropyrene and 2-nitronaphthalene. These results indicate that the new strains permit the efficient detection of mutagenic nitroarenes.  相似文献

Histochemical reaction with glyoxylic acid has revealed a specific fluorescence caused by the presence of indolamine (apparently serotonin) in the nervous system of larva and mature cestode. Fluorescence manifests itself in neurons and nerve fibres of the central ganglion and its commissure, in nerve cells of the proboscis, in longitudinal trunks and transverse commissures, and in the nerve elements connected with genital system.  相似文献

Summary In the annual herb Cassia fasciculata virtually every leaf subtends an axillary inflorescence. We examined the degree to which these leaf-inflorescence units (reproductive nodes) were physiologically independent of each other in the production of flowers, fruits, and seeds. Removal of up to 4 of every 5 inflorescences resulted in substantial increases in fruit and seed production by remaining, intact reproductive nodes. These increases nearly compensated for and manipulated reproductive nodes were associated with different vascular strands. When 2 of every 3 leaves were removed, fruit and seed production were reduced at both intact and defoliated reproductive nodes. Taken together, these results suggest that neighboring reproductive nodes in C. fasciculata are not physiologically independent of one another, and that competition among fruits and seeds for parental resources occurs over several reproductive nodes.Scientific contribution no. 1595 from the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of acidity on bean-Rhizobium competition for nodule sites. SevenPhaseolus vulgaris host cultivars differing in acid-pH tolerance were grown in sand culture, and irrigated using a sub-irrigation system and nutrient solutions of pH 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, and 6.0. A mixed inoculant of two antibiotically markedRhizobium leguminosarum bvphaseoli strains CIAT899 (acid-tolerant) and CIAT632 (acid-sensitive) was used. The acid-tolerant CIAT899 dominated CIAT632 in nodule occupancy across all cultivars and pH treatments. Although several of the varieties had previously been identified as PH-tolerant, and these cultivars performed better than those reported to be acid sensitive, all showed a marked increase in nodulation and plant development when the pH was raised from 4.5 to 6.0. The second experiment using a modified Leonard jar system varied the inoculation ratio between CIAT899 and UMR1116 (acid-sensitive, inefficient in N2-fixation) and contrasted nodulation response for the bean varieties Preto 143 (pH-tolerant) and Negro Argel (pH-sensitive) at 3 pH treatments (4.5, 5.5, 6.5). There was a significant effect of host cultivar, ratio of inoculation, and pH on the percentage of nodule occupancy by each strain. At low pH CIAT899 had higher nodule occupancy than UM1116 in the variety Negro Argel but had the same percentage of nodulation when the variety was Preto 143. Increasing the cell concentration of UMR1116 produced more inefficient nodules at all treatment combinations and reduced plant growth for both cultivars used.  相似文献

Radioprotective efficacy of differently composed amino acid mixtures (e. g. swine brain hydrolyzate, mixtures of several crystalline amino acids, etc.) was estimated. The survival rate and average life of exposed animals increased after the administration of amino acid preparations. Sexual contact keys a profound series of acute and chronic changes in males that, presumably, are orchestrated by acute pulsatile release of hormones. An experimental paradigm is reported in which male rats were paired periodically with either the same or different estrous females to receive identical amounts of copulatory experiences. Results confirmed the hypothesis that exposure to an unfamiliar female would induce a different endocrine response which would be reflected in various androgen-sensitive systems. The "successively polygynous" males showed more sexual behavior than "monogamous" males, and their respective females solicited the males differently, as well. Circulating levels of testosterone were higher immediately after sexual contact with an unfamiliar than with a familiar female partner. There were no differences in testosterone titers among the groups when the animals were killed at either 2 or 7 weeks after the final copulatory experiences. Yet, necropsies at 2 weeks postcopulation revealed that primary and secondary sex structures from polygynous males clearly were larger. Differences between the two experimental groups were reduced after 7 weeks of sexual rest, yet, polygnous males continued to show a different structural profile than the other groups. Conclusions were that males may experience greater activation of androgen-sensitive behavior and physiology following qualitatively different sexual contacts.  相似文献

These studies provide further support for the thesis that the activation of protein kinase C is likely involved in the prolactin (PRL) stimulation of mitogenesis in the Nb2 node lymphoma cell line. The diterpene mezerein is shown to potentiate the mitogenic effect of PRL at a hormone concentration which elicits a less than maximum response. A similar response was observed with two diglycerides, diolein and dicaprin. Neither mezerein nor the diglycerides affected the magnitude of response to a maximum stimulatory concentration of PRL.  相似文献
