Summary Viral leukemogenesis in mice is frequently initiated by proviral activation of a highly conserved cellular gene called Pim-1. Here we report the chromosomal localization of the human homologue by Southern blot analyses of DNAs obtained from human-rodent somatic cell hybrids. We examined the relationships among reproductive hormone concentrations and bone mineral density (BMD) in 43 women runners classified as eumenorrheic (n = 24), oligomenorrheic (n = 8), or amenorrheic (n = 11). Results were compared with a eumenorrheic nonrunner control group (n = 11). Serum 17 beta-estradiol, progesterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate concentrations were determined in daily blood samples for 21 days, and integrated concentrations (areas under the curve) were calculated. BMD was assessed at the lumbar spine and proximal femur by dual-photon absorptiometry. As expected, 17 beta-estradiol, progesterone, and lumbar spine BMD were higher in the control and eumenorrheic runner groups than in the oligomenorrheic and amenorrheic runner groups (P less than 0.05). Progesterone concentration was significantly correlated with lumbar spine BMD in the eumenorrheic runners (r = 0.61). None of the steroid hormones was significantly related to BMD in the oligomenorrheic/amenorrheic group. The present data suggest that circulating levels of gonadal steroid hormones affect axial BMD in eumenorrheic runners.  相似文献

Oxidation of thymine with O2 was promoted by copper(I) ion generated from reaction of L-ascorbic acid (AA) with copper (II) ion. The main oxidation products were thymine glycol (TG) and N-formyl-N'-pyruvylurea (FPU). At higher concentration of O2, formation of FPU was favored, while TG was dominant at higher Cu(II) ion and lower O2 concentrations. Reaction mechanism involving hydroxy thyminyl radical was proposed.  相似文献

Phenotypic data on 203 Gram-negative non-fermentative bacteria of the Flavobacterium-Cytophaga group isolated from milk and butter were analyzed by numerical taxonomic techniques. Twenty reference strains including species of Flavobacterium, Cytophaga and strains of Pseudomonas paucimobilis were included in the study. Using the matching coefficient of Sokal & Michener with antibiotic susceptibility data included, 139 isolates were recovered in nine clusters. Six of these clusters were linked at or above the 85% S level while three were linked at or above the 79% S level. The largest cluster, representing 46.3% of the isolates, could be equated with Flavobacterium sp. Group IIb. Other clusters could be equated with Flavobacterium sp. L 16/1 (22.7% of isolates), F. balustinum (10.8% of isolates), F. breve (4.4%), F. multivorum (3.5%) and Cytophaga johnsonae (1.5%). The cluster resembling Flavobacterium sp. L 16/1 and a smaller unclassified cluster, were exceptional in being susceptible to the antibiotics cephalothin and penicillin G.  相似文献

The ocelotLeopardus pardalis Linnaeus, 1758 is an endangered felid in the United States currently restricted to southern Texas. The objectives of our study were to obtain data on ocelot parturition dates, fecundity, sex ratios, den characteristics, and first year survival, all of which are critical in development of population viability models. Sixteen parturition events were recorded ranging from mid-April to late December for 12 wild ocelots. Cumulatively, litters consisted of 1 or 2 kittens (ˉ = 1.2 ± 0.44 SD). Cumulative sex ratio was 1∶2.5 (male:female); however, there was no significant difference between the observed sex ratio and a 1∶1 sex ratio. Ten den sites were in close proximity (≤ 10 m) to dense thornshrub. Adult female ocelots used 2 to 4 den sites for each litter with distance between consecutively occupied dens ranging from 110 to 280 m (ˉ = 158 m ± 93 SD). An estimated annual survival for ocelots 0 to 1 year of age was 0.68. Evidence suggests that ocelots in the wild may breed more frequently than had been previously hypothesized.  相似文献

A method is proposed for assessing the biocidal efficacy of water-dispersed nanoparticles of silver. It is based on negative chemotaxis of the plasmodia of the slime mold Physarum polycephalum. Biocidal and repellent effects were compared for silver nanoparticles, Ag+ ions, and AOT in solution and in the agar gel. In such characteristics as increasing the period of auto-oscillations of contractile activity, decreasing the area of spreading on substrate, and substrate preference in spatial tests, silver nanoparticles proved to be substantially more effective than Ag+ and AOT. The lethal concentrations of the nanoparticles were close to those found earlier for bacteria and viruses. The chemotactic tests allow quantitative assessment of the biological reaction and monitoring its dynamics; in resolution, they are superior to the tests based on the lethal action of biocidal agents.  相似文献

Circular duplex structures of the correct length are observed in the electron microscope in hybridization mixtures of lysogen DNA and mature phage DNA for the case of the temperate Bacillus subtilis bacteriophage SPO2. This result shows that the sequence order of the prophage is a circular permutation of that of the mature phage. By making heteroduplexes of prophage DNA with that of the SPO2 deletion mutants, R90 and S25, the att site of the phage has been mapped at 61.2 ± 0.6% from one end of the mature phage DNA, which has a length of 38,600 base pairs. In the same co-ordinate system, the R90 deletion extends from 58.9 ± 0.7 to 66.8 ± 0.8% on the SPO2 chromosome, whereas the S25 deletion extends from 63.2 ± 0.6 to 66.9 ± 0.7%. In similar experiments with lysogen and mature phage DNA's of the temperate B. subtilis phage, φ105, no circular structures were seen. This result shows that the sequence order in the prophage and the phage are colinear, without circular permutation.  相似文献
