Abstract: Morphological and reproductive features and cell wall ultrastructure and biochemistry of Proterozoic acritarchs are used to determine their affinity to modern algae. The first appearance datum of these microbiota is traced to infer a minimum age of the divergence of the algal classes to which they may belong. The chronological appearance of microfossils that represent phycoma‐like and zygotic cysts and vegetative cells and/or aplanospores, respectively, interpreted as prasinophyceaen and chlorophyceaen microalgae is related to the Viridiplantae phylogeny. An inferred minimum age of the Chlorophyte origin is before c. 1800 Ma, the Prasinophyceae at c. 1650 Ma and the Chlorophyceae at c. 1450 Ma. These divergence times differ from molecular clock estimates, and the palaeontological evidence suggests that they are older. 相似文献

Abstract: Microconchid tubeworms (Tentaculita) encrusting brachiopod shells have been investigated from the upper Frasnian – lower Famennian (Upper Devonian) deposits of the Central Devonian Field, Russia. The condition of microconchids and associated encrusting taxa is reported for the first time from the early Famennian recovery interval (crepida Chron) following the Frasnian–Famennian mass extinction. Two species, one new (Palaeoconchus variabilis sp. nov.) and the second one in open nomenclature (Palaeoconchus sp.), are described. Compared to lower Famennian specimens, they seem to be preferentially grouped on the anterior parts of the brachiopod host shells, which are interpreted as the most suitable sites away from the sea‐bottom and sediment. During the late Frasnian (Late rhenana Chron), microconchids, outnumbered by cornulitids and as abundant as foraminifers, were also associated with trepostome bryozoans, tabulates, rugose corals and various problematic encrusters. During the early Famennian recovery interval encompassing the crepida Chron, microconchids greatly outnumbered all associated encrusters, including the previously dominant cornulitids, while foraminifers, tabulates and rugose corals vanished. Early Famennian microconchids, represented by the single, albeit very abundant, species Palaeoconchus variabilis sp. nov., were opportunists that rapidly colonised the environment during the ongoing transgression following the regression‐driven biotic crisis in the area of the Central Devonian Field. In comparison to their late Frasnian predecessors and even other Middle Devonian specimens, no size reduction (the so‐called Lilliput effect) of early Famennian microconchid tubes was observed. It is probable that microconchids either rapidly attained their ‘normal’ sizes or they did not suffer any dwarfism following the Frasnian–Famennian event. 相似文献

Storage lipid and protein breakdown in germinating seeds of yellow (Lupinus luteus L.), white (L. albus L.), and Andean lupine (L. mutabilis Sweet) and regulatory function of sucrose were investigated. Less oil bodies were detected in organs of yellow lupine seeds,
whereas the highest content of oil bodies was noticed in the Andean lupine seeds. Mature, air-dried yellow, white and Andean
lupine seeds do not contain starch. Starch grains appear the earliest in white lupine seeds during imbibition. Sucrose deficiency
in tissues enhances breakdown of storage lipid, protein and temporary starch in cotyledons. In sucrose starved embryo axes
of all investigated lupine species, an increased level of vacuolization was noted. Interconnections between catabolism of
storage protein and storage lipid in germinating lupine seeds were identified by applying 14C-acetate. To assess the importance of key processes in storage lipid breakdown NaF (inhibitor of glycolysis and gluconeogenesis),
KCN, NaN3 and SHAM (inhibitors of mitochondrial electron transport chain) and MSO (inhibitor of glutamine synthetase) were used. Radioactivity
coming from 14C-acetate was released as 14CO2 but mostly was incorporated into ethanol-soluble fraction of embryo axes and cotyledons. Respiratory inhibitors caused a
significant decrease in 14CO2 and ethanol fractions in all three lupine species studied. MSO stimulated release of 14CO2 and radioactivity of ethanol fractions in yellow lupine organs fed with sucrose, but in Andean lupine MSO enhanced the production
of 14CO2 and radioactivity of ethanol fractions both in organs fed and not fed with sucrose. Different strategies of storage compound

In adult life, stem cell deposits are kept in organ niches; the need for tissue or organ regeneration mobilizes stem cells via the SDF-1-CXCR4 regulation axis. Constant regeneration of the skin is achieved due to stem cell differentiation within the epidermis and the hair follicle; thus, skin may serve as an excellent source of stem cells. Pex11 is a key player in peroxisome proliferation, but the molecular mechanisms of its function are still unknown. Here, we show that Pex11 contains a conserved sequence at the N-terminus that can adopt the structure of an amphipathic helix. Using Penicillium chrysogenum Pex11, we show that this amphipathic helix, termed Pex11-Amph, associates with liposomes in vitro. This interaction is especially evident when negatively charged liposomes are used with a phospholipid content resembling that of peroxisomal membranes. Binding of Pex11-Amph to negatively charged membrane vesicles resulted in strong tubulation. This tubulation of vesicles was also observed when the entire soluble N-terminal domain of Pex11 was used. Using mutant peptides, we demonstrate that maintaining the amphipathic properties of Pex11-Amph in conjunction with retaining its α-helical structure are crucial for its function. We show that the membrane remodelling capacity of the amphipathic helix in Pex11 is conserved from yeast to man. Finally, we demonstrate that mutations abolishing the membrane remodelling activity of the Pex11-Amph domain also hamper the function of full-length Pex11 in peroxisome fission in vivo. 相似文献

Filipiak, P. & Zatoń, M. 2010: Plant and animal cuticle remains from the Lower Devonian of southern Poland and their palaeoenvironmental significance. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 397–409. Assemblages of plant and arthropod remains are reported from the Lower Devonian clastic deposits of the Upper Silesian and Ma?opolska blocks in southern Poland. Most of the plant and animal remains are palynologically dated as Pragian–Emsian/Eifelian. The plant material comprises higher plant cuticles with stomata classified as Drephanophycus and Sawdonia, and more enigmatic remains (nematophytes) classified as Nematothallus, Cosmochlaina and tubular banded tubes. They are associated with abundant and diverse miospores. Animal remains consist of eurypterid respiratory organs, the morphology of which may presumably point to their advance physiological properties, and cuticular remains of eurypterid and probably scorpion origin, as well as some remains of unknown affinity. The presence of such mixed assemblages in the Lower Devonian of Poland indicate marginal‐marine and/or alluvial environments spreading in the southern margin of the Old Red Continent. The dominance of land‐derived plant remains and simultaneous scarcity of marine acritarchs indicate that the environment was very weakly influenced by marine conditions. If nematophytes were really related to extant liverworts, as suggested by some workers, they, together with the other associated spore‐producing plants, may strongly indicate moist environmental conditions, which may have offered suitable habitats for temporary eurypterid migrations onto land. □Cuticles, eurypterids, Lower Devonian, nematophytes, Poland, spores. 相似文献

Candida yeasts are saprophytes naturally present in the environment and forming colonies on human mucous membranes and skin. They are opportunistic fungi that cause severe and even fatal infections in immunocompromised individuals. Several essential oils, including eucalyptus, pine, cinnamon and lemon, have been shown to be effective against Candida strains. This study addresses the chemical composition of some commercial lemon essential oils and their antifungal potential against selected Candida yeast strains. Antifungal potential and minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined for six commercial lemon essential oils against five Candida yeast strains (Candida albicans 31, Candida tropicalis 32, Candida glabrata 33, Candida glabrata 35 and Candida glabrata 38). On the basis of the GCMS analysis, it was found that the tested lemon essential oils had different chemical compositions, but mostly, they contained almost exclusively terpenes and oxygenated terpenes. The tests show that antifungal potential of lemon essential oils against Candida yeast strains was related to the high content of monoterpenoids and the type of Candida strains. From six tested commercial oils, only four (ETJA, Vera-Nord, Avicenna-Oil and Aromatic Art) shows antifungal potential against three Candida species (C. albicans, C. tropicalis and C. glabrata). Vera-Nord and Avicenna-Oil show the best activity and effectively inhibit the growth of the C. albicans strain across the full range of the concentrations used. Campylobacter spp. are regarded as the most common bacterial cause of gastroenteritis worldwide, and consumption of chicken meat contaminated by Campylobacter is considered to be one of the most frequent sources of human infection in developed countries. Here we evaluated the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of Salmonella Typhimurium χ9718 producing the Campylobacter jejuni CjaA protein as a chicken anti-Campylobacter vaccine. In this study chickens were orally immunized with a new generation S. Typhimurium strain χ9718 with regulated delayed attenuation in vivo and displaying delayed antigen expression. The immunization with the S. Typhimurium χ9718 strain producing C. jejuni CjaA antigen induced strong immune responses against CjaA in both serum IgY and intestinal IgA, however, it did not result in the significant reduction of intestinal colonization by Campylobacter strain. The low level of protection might arise due to a lack of T cell response. Our results demonstrated that a Salmonella strain with regulated delayed attenuation and displaying regulated delayed antigen expression might be an efficient vector to induce immune response against Campylobacter. It seems that an efficient anti-Campylobacter subunit vaccine should be multicomponent. Since S. Typhimurium χ9718 contains two compatible balanced-lethal plasmids, it can provide the opportunity of cloning several Campylobacter genes encoding immunodominant proteins. It may also be used as a delivery vector of eukaryotic genes encoding immunostimulatory molecules to enhance or modulate functioning of chicken immune system. 相似文献
