Teenage pregnancies have been considered mainly as perinatological and social problem up to now, in contrast biological and evolutionary aspects were neglected. In the present analysis the hypothesis is discussed that teenage pregnancies may represent a fitness maximizing strategy, with other words an efficient use of the relatively short female reproductive span. Results from auxology, primatology, historical demography and life history research, however, are in contradiction to the hypothesis. Extremely early teenage pregnancies (below the 16th birthday) seem to be a recent phenomenon caused by the decline of sexual maturation in course of the well described secular acceleration trend.  相似文献

Ty3/gypsy retrotransposons are rare in mammalian genomes despite their abundance in invertebrate and other vertebrate classes. Here we identify a family of nine conserved mammalian genes with homology to Ty3/gypsy retrotransposons but which have lost their ability to autonomously retrotranspose. Of these, five map to the X chromosome while the remaining four are autosomal. Comparative phylogenetic analyses show them to have strongest homology to the sushi-ichi element from Fugu rubripes. Two of the autosomal gene members, Peg10 and Rtl1, are known to be imprinted, being expressed from the paternally inherited chromosome homologue. This suggests, consistent with the host-parasite response theory of the evolution of the imprinting mechanism, that parental-origin specific epigenetic control may be mediated by genomic “parasitic” elements such as these. Alternatively, these elements may preferentially integrate into regions that are differentially modified on the two homologous chromosomes such as imprinted domains and the X chromosome and acquire monoallelic expression. We assess the imprinting status of the remaining autosomal members of this family and show them to be biallelically expressed in embryo and placenta. Furthermore, the methylation status of Rtl1 was assayed throughout development and was found to resemble that of actively, silenced repetitive elements rather than imprinted sequences. This indicates that the ability to undergo genomic imprinting is not an inherent property of all members of this family of retroelements. Nonetheless, the conservation but functional divergence between the different members suggests that they have undergone positive selection and acquired distinct endogenous functions within their mammalian hosts. The discovery of ribozymes strengthened the RNA world hypothesis, which assumes that these precursors of modern life both stored information and acted as catalysts. For the first time among extensive studies on ribozymes, we have investigated the influence of hydrostatic pressure on the hairpin ribozyme catalytic activity. High pressures are of interest when studying life under extreme conditions and may help to understand the behavior of macromolecules at the origins of life. Kinetic studies of the hairpin ribozyme self-cleavage were performed under high hydrostatic pressure. The activation volume of the reaction (34 ± 5 ml/mol) calculated from these experiments is of the same order of magnitude as those of common protein enzymes, and reflects an important compaction of the RNA molecule during catalysis, associated to a water release. Kinetic studies were also carried out under osmotic pressure and confirmed this interpretation and the involvement of water movements (78 ± 4 water molecules per RNA molecule). Taken together, these results are consistent with structural studies indicating that loops A and B of the ribozyme come into close contact during the formation of the transition state. While validating baro-biochemistry as an efficient tool for investigating dynamics at work during RNA catalysis, these results provide a complementary view of ribozyme catalytic mechanisms.  相似文献

Three occurrences of the macroalga Prasiola fluviatilis (Sommerf.) Aresch. were recorded after the examination of 32 stream segments from the Ellesmere Island National Park Reserve (81°23′ N) in the High Arctic of Canada. The collection sites were small (second-third order) glacial melt streams characterized by pH 7.3–8.2, specific conductance of 52–159 μS·cm?1, low ion levels, extremely low nutrient levels, and the lack of other prominent macroalgae. These occurrences confirm the reported circumpolar distribution of the species.  相似文献

We determined the cysteine connectivity of protegrin PG-2, a leukocyte-derived antimicrobial peptide, by performing sequential enzyme digestions with chymotrypsin and thermolysin, and monitoring each digest by direct liquid chromatography–electrospray mass spectrometric analysis. This approach resolved the disulphide pairing pattern unambiguously with only picomolar amounts of PG-2. The inferred cysteine connectivity was confirmed by traditional amino acid composition analyses using nanomolar amounts of the protegrin. The results suggest that protegrins will assume a tachyplesin-like, disulphide-stabilized antiparallel β-sheet configuration in solution.  相似文献
