HOST LIFE HISTORY AND THE EVOLUTION OF PARASITE VIRULENCE   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Abstract.— We present a general epidemiological model of host‐parasite interactions that includes various forms of superinfection. We use this model to study the effects of different host life‐history traits on the evolution of parasite virulence. In particular, we analyze the effects of natural host death rate on the evolutionarily stable parasite virulence. We show that, contrary to classical predictions, an increase in the natural host death rate may select for lower parasite virulence if some form of superinfection occurs. This result is in agreement with the experimental results and the verbal argument presented by Ebert and Mangin (1997). This experiment is discussed in the light of the present model. We also point out the importance of superinfections for the effect of nonspecific immunity on the evolution of virulence. In a broader perspective, this model demonstrates that the occurrence of multiple infections may qualitatively alter classical predictions concerning the effects of various host life‐history traits on the evolution of parasite virulence.  相似文献

The dental morphology of the Recent squaliformTrigonognathus kabeyai is described and figured in detail for the first time. Some enigmatic teeth recently collected in the Lutetian of Landes (southwestern France) can be interpreted and identified as a new species (T. virginiae n. sp.) thanks to the study of the Recent genus. The discovery of a very specialized genus as early as the Lutetian indicates an early colonization of the bathyal habitat.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of 5 typological variables on the spatial distribution patterns of fish species richness in south‐western France, and, subsequently, to analyse differences in the number of species occurring in 6 major hydroregions located within the overall study area. The data were collected at 329 sampling sites. General Linear Modelling was used to assess the influence of each typological variable on local fish species richness, and to determine the differences in local fish species richness between the 6 hydroregions. Local species richness was significantly influenced by altitude, slope and catchment area, whereas distance from the source and stream width showed no significant relations with local richness. The Côteaux de Gascogne hydroregion had a significantly lower species richness, whereas no significant differences occurred among other neighbouring hydroregions. These results were congruent with the spatial distribution patterns of freshwater invertebrate species richness in the area, which were analysed in previous studies. At such a regional scale, we suggest that congruent patterns between fish and invertebrate species richness are almost certainly a result of similar responses by different taxa to environmental conditions, rather than to biotic interactions. Wild animal species living in anthropogenic areas are commonly carriers of antimicrobial‐resistant bacteria (AMRB), but their role in the epidemiology of these bacteria is unclear. Several studies on AMRB in wildlife have been cross‐sectional in design and sampled individual animals at only one point in time. To further understand the role of wildlife in maintaining and potentially transmitting these bacteria to humans and livestock, longitudinal studies are needed in which samples are collected from individual animals over multiple time periods. In Europe, free‐ranging yellow‐legged gulls (Larus michahellis) commonly live in industrialized areas, forage in landfills, and have been found to carry AMRB in their feces. Using bacterial metagenomics and antimicrobial resistance characterization, we investigated the spatial and temporal patterns of AMRB in a nesting colony of yellow‐legged gulls from an industrialized area in southern France. We collected 54 cloacal swabs from 31 yellow‐legged gull chicks in 20 nests on three dates in 2016. We found that AMRB in chicks increased over time and was not spatially structured within the gull colony. This study highlights the complex occurrence of AMRB in a free‐ranging wildlife species and contributes to our understanding of the public health risks and implications associated with ARMB‐carrying gulls living in anthropogenic areas.  相似文献

We report on a simple and high‐yield manufacturing process for silicon planar patch‐clamp chips, which allow low capacitance and series resistance from individually identified cultured neurons. Apertures are etched in a high‐quality silicon nitride film on a silicon wafer; wells are opened on the backside of the wafer by wet etching and passivated by a thick deposited silicon dioxide film to reduce the capacitance of the chip and to facilitate the formation of a high‐impedance cell to aperture seal. The chip surface is suitable for culture of neurons over a small orifice in the substrate with minimal leak current. Collectively, these features enable high‐fidelity electrophysiological recording of transmembrane currents resulting from ion channel activity in cultured neurons. Using cultured Lymnaea neurons we demonstrate whole‐cell current recordings obtained from a voltage‐clamp stimulation protocol, and in current‐clamp mode we report action potentials stimulated by membrane depolarization steps. Despite the relatively large size of these neurons, good temporal and spatial control of cell membrane voltage was evident. To our knowledge this is the first report of recording of ion channel activity and action potentials from neurons cultured directly on a planar patch‐clamp chip. This interrogation platform has enormous potential as a novel tool to readily provide high‐information content during pharmaceutical assays to investigate in vitro models of disease, as well as neuronal physiology and synaptic plasticity. Direct visualization shows enhanced embolism of xylem samples when they are collected under tension.Embolism resistance is a critically important trait for evaluating the ability of plants to survive and recover from drought periods and predicting future drought-induced forest decline (Choat et al., 2012). However, recent publications have provided evidence that some measurement techniques used to evaluate the hydraulic function and vulnerability to cavitation of plant organs may be prone to artifacts (Sperry et al., 2012; Cochard et al., 2013; Torres-Ruiz et al., 2014; Trifilò et al., 2014). The discovery of these artifacts has raised questions regarding the reliability of some previously published plant hydraulics data, in particular data relating to the refilling of embolized xylem conduits while the xylem is under tension. In this context, Wheeler et al. (2013) reported that sampling plant organs by cutting while the xylem is under tension can induce artificial increases in the degree of embolism at the moment of sample excision, even when cuts are made under water. The methodology applied by Wheeler et al. (2013), however, did not allow the visualization of embolized or functional vessels, and native embolism levels could not be determined in intact plants before any cutting was done.Whereas Scoffoni and Sack (2014) showed that the artifact described by Wheeler et al. (2013) has no impact on leaf xylem hydraulic conductance, there is some uncertainty about its importance in stems or shoots (Trifilò et al., 2014; Venturas et al., 2014). The results of Wheeler et al. (2013) indicate that more embolism could be induced by cutting samples that are under midrange xylem tension (e.g. at midday or under conditions of water stress). Potential overestimation of embolism due to changes in the xylem tension during the day has important implications for our understanding of plant water relations, since they could erroneously suggest that daily patterns of embolism formation and repair are routine in many woody plant species. Debate continues regarding the implications of a cutting artifact for the existence of a mechanism that allows plants to repair embolism while the xylem is under tension, so-called novel refilling (Salleo et al., 1996; Cochard and Delzon, 2013; Sperry, 2013; Delzon and Cochard, 2014). To avoid the excision artifact, Wheeler et al. (2013) recommended the relaxation of the xylem tension prior to excision by rehydrating plant tissue for anywhere between 2 min and 2 h. However, recent results from Trifilò et al. (2014) indicated that the rehydration procedures used by Wheeler et al. (2013) for relaxing the samples might favor xylem refilling and embolism repair (rehydration artifact), suggesting that the artifact resides in the relaxing procedure rather than in the cutting procedure. In light of these data, the assessment of the artifact described by Wheeler et al. (2013) using noninvasive techniques on intact plants, such as direct observation using x-ray microtomography (micro-CT; McElrone et al., 2013; Cochard et al., 2014) or magnetic resonance imaging (Choat et al., 2010; Zwieniecki et al., 2013), is useful to visually assess changes in embolism after cutting stems.  相似文献

Prostaglandins are ubiquitous lipid mediators that play pivotal roles in cardiovascular homeostasis, reproduction, and inflammation, as well as in many important cellular processes including gene expression and cell proliferation. The mechanism of action of these lipid messengers is thought to be primarily dependent on their interaction with specific cell surface receptors that belong to the heptahelical transmembrane spanning G protein-coupled receptor superfamily. Accumulating evidence suggests that these receptors may co-localize at the cell nucleus where they can modulate gene expression through a series of biochemical events. In this context, we have recently demonstrated that prostaglandin E2-EP3 receptors display an atypical nuclear compartmentalization in cerebral microvascular endothelial cells. Stimulation of these nuclear EP3 receptors leads to an increase of eNOS RNA in a cell-free isolated nuclear system. This review will emphasize these findings and describe how nuclear prostaglandin receptors, notably EP3 receptors, may affect gene expression, specifically of eNOS, by identifying putative transducing elements located within this organelle. The potential sources of lipid ligand activators for these intracellular sites will also be addressed. The expressional control of G-protein-coupled receptors located at the perinuclear envelope constitutes a novel and distinctive mode of gene regulation.  相似文献
