Acetophenone and stilbene derivatives from Gnetum ula

The isolation of bergenin, 2-hydroxy-4-benzyloxyacetophenone and the related dimer and stilbene from Gnetum ula is reported.     

Structural studies on a carbohydrate chain isolated from the lipopolysaccharide of Shigella boydii type 8

The lipopolysaccharide isolated from the cells of Shigella boydii type 8 bacteria gave precipitin bands against homologous antisera on Ouchterlony plates, whereas the carbohydrate-containing fractions obtained from it did not. One of the fractions was obtained in major proportion and contained 23.5% of sugars. A structure was assigned to the carbohydrate chain in this material by using the results of methylation, periodate oxidation, and deamination studies.     

Studies on the antibacterial effects of negapillin in combination with other antibiotics and sulfa drugs

Summary The antibacterial effect of negapillin in combination with other antibiotics and sulfa drugs was studied using Gram+ve and Gram-ve bacteria as test organisms. Subsequently, various proportions of negapillin in combination with the antibiotics and the sulfa drugs were examined to determine the optimum proportions which exert maximum inhibitory effects on the bacterial growth. Mixtures of these antibiotics with negapillin were found more superior not only as antimicrobial agents but also for having comparatively low toxicity.     

Aging of mesenchymal stem cell in vitro

Background  

A hot new topic in medical treatment is the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in therapy. The low frequency of this subpopulation of stem cells in bone marrow (BM) necessitates their in vitro expansion prior to clinical use. We evaluated the effect of long term culture on the senescence of these cells.     

Arabidopsis ADC1 functions as an N~δ-acetylornithine decarboxylase

Polyamines are small aliphatic amines found in almost all organisms, ranging from bacteria to plants and animals. In most plants, putrescine, the metabolic precursor for longer polyamines, such as spermidine and spermine, is produced from arginine, with either agmatine or ornithine as intermediates. Here we show that Arabidopsis thaliana(Arabidopsis) arginine decarboxylase 1(ADC1), one of the two known arginine decarboxylases in Arabidopsis, not only synthesizes agmatine from arginine, but also converts N~δ-acetylornithine to N-acetylputrescine. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that duplication and neofunctionalization of ADC1 and NATA1, the enzymes that synthesize N~δ-acetylornithine in Arabidopsis, co-occur in a small number of related species in the Brassicaceae. Unlike ADC2, which is localized in the chloroplasts, ADC1 is in the endoplasmic reticulum together with NATA1, an indication that these two enzymes have access to the same substrate pool. Together, these results are consistent with a model whereby NATA1 and ADC1 together provide a pathway for the synthesis of N-acetylputrescine in Arabidopsis.
